1 Good evening, everyone. The GSB Constitution states that the President must address the Senate to the State of the Student Body once per session. I am here today fulfilling that duty for the first session of the term. But when I think about the nature of what this is - a report on the State of the Student Body - I believe that each of you would have that knowledge before almost anyone else, and before any report. Because as GSB Senators, your role is to represent students. As you sit in this room, your voice is the voice of the students in your college or the students who live in the same area as you. You are - or at least, you should be - closer to the students than anyone. So I want to talk today more broadly about what GSB is and what GSB should become, as it relates to the student body - because everything that we do is for the student body. GSB is here to represent student interests, and we do a great job of that in a lot of aspects. But we have a tremendous amount of work to do in some vital areas of representation that we must all focus on, together, over the upcoming year. I want to focus on three areas where we need to and where we can make significant improvements. These areas are transparency, connection, and creative problem-solving.
2 First, GSB must become a more transparent organization. Transparency leads to accountability, and accountability leads to better government. We have taken great strides together in this area and we must continue moving forward with them. We are already video recording each Senate meeting, thanks to the hard work of Senator Bauer and others, and this technology and process will only improve over the next year. We ll soon have an updated display case just outside of the West Student Office Space with contact information and Senate and Cabinet meeting agendas posted every week. We ll have an easy-to-use website with the name, position, and contact information of every GSB representative on Senate, Cabinet, Supreme Court, and every committee - both within GSB and outside of GSB in the university. On that website, we ll have the vote record from every Senate meeting, and the minutes from every meeting of every GSB entity - Senate, Cabinet, committees, and more. We ll also have publicly available information about upcoming legislation and a running tally of how much money we ve spent, from which accounts, and what it s been spent on. We ll integrate our social media accounts, and we ll be updating our Facebook and Twitter accounts with news on a daily basis. We ll have a list of every GSB-owned capital item on the website, and any student will have the opportunity to submit a reasonable request to use any of the items. No student should have any trouble finding information about what we do. My goal is to make GSB the most transparent student government at any college or university in the nation. And we will achieve this goal.
3 Our push for transparency will not only be internal. Students pay many fees, and the details of each of these should have easily accessible, easily understandable, and public information about where they go and what they accomplish. GSB is in charge of the activity fee, and we will make it transparent, but this informatio should be just as easily accessible for the Services Fee, the Building Fee, the Recreation Fee, the Health Fee, the Health Facility Fee, and the Technology Fee. This transparency can and should be applied to student tuition, as well. The university, and each college within the university, should have an easily accessible, easily understandable, and public record of where student tuition dollars are going. As the Board of Regents makes transparency a priority, so will GSB, and this combined effort will result in a much more transparent and accountable university. Second, GSB must become an organization with a stronger connection to the students that it represents. This is an issue that has been raised year after year, and some progress has been made. We have already taken a great stride forward in connection with the successful Meet Your Government Day, and similar events in the future will only serve to strengthen this connection. We all must do a better job on an individual level of connecting with students. Some say that face-to-face conversation is the best way to connect; others claim that using new technology like Facebook and Twitter is more effective.
4 I say, let s do both. Let s all make a point to connect with students through all of the channels available to us. Speak with students about issues, share GSB business through social media, friends about something we did that they would be interested in. We can t limit ourselves to any one platform to connect with students, when there are a few dozen of us in this room and 31,000 people outside of it that we are tasked with representing. Don t be what I will pejoratively refer to as a Wednesday night Senator - one who shows up at 7pm, flips a switch, and becomes a GSB senator, then flips the switch again as they leave the room and turns it off. You are always a GSB representative. You must always remember this. Your job is 24/7. So connect with students any way that you can. Talk with people about issues around campus. Post an informal poll on Facebook about upcoming legislation. Connect with the students that you represent. Third, GSB must be open to creative problem-solving. What I mean by this is a willingness to approach problems with an open mind, embracing the potential of doing something that we have never done before. GSB is facing some significant issues as we enter the school year. We re facing a large increase in enrollment, causing some students to likely live in public-private partnership housing that has never been done here before. How will these students be represented in GSB? We also face significant issues with diversity. Presha Kardile, our Director of Student Diversity, has met with a number of multicultural organization student leaders already and many have stated that they feel unwelcome at GSB meetings due to the lack of
5 diversity. While diversity includes many things and has many components, our lack of ethnic diversity and lack of gender diversity is obvious on a first glance. We must make serious strides to become a more welcoming student organization and seek the best student leaders for GSB that will bring more diverse perspectives. We re also seeing more and more student organizations come to us and request funding. As the requests grow exponentially faster than the available funds, how do we best serve students? A significant overhaul of the GSB funding mechanism is something that Finance Director Rediske, myself, and others have determined as necessary moving forward to preserve the mission of GSB. These are only a few of the many significant issues that we will face, together, over the next year. We must always remember that the right answer may be something we ve never done before, or that no one has ever done before. Each solution to a problem, no matter how simple it may seem now, was tried for the first time by some brave soul at one point. Over the next year, we ll have to brave and engage in some creative problem-solving. So, what does this all mean relative to the State of the Student Body? It means that when we become more transparent, the student body holds us more accountable. It means that when we become more connected, you can tell me or anyone else what the State of the Student Body actually is. And it means that when we become more creative in our
6 problem-solving, we are able to face any challenge, no matter how difficult, standing together as one organization - the student body at Iowa State University. Let s do it together. Thank you all. Let s have a great meeting.
