1 FRESHMAN ORIENTATION AT SIEGEL HIGH SCHOOL TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2015 AT 6:45 P.M. The administration and staff eagerly await the arrival of the freshman class of Siegel High School offers a vast array of curricular and extracurricular activities under the direction of a truly dedicated faculty. We know from experience that the students are the most important component of a successful school. Our objective at Siegel High is to help our students reach their academic, athletic, and personal goals. We are asking for commitments from students, parents, and teachers to reach these goals. Freshman Orientation for future Siegel High School ninth grade students and their parents will occur Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at 6:45 P.M. Information will be shared about graduation requirements, the Tennessee Diploma Project, and the Tennessee Lottery s Hope Scholarship. An opportunity will be provided from 6:45-7:30 to tour the school and to meet teachers, coaches, and sponsors of extra-curricular activities. Booths will be set up throughout the school and a map will be provided. Freshman registration for the school year will also take place that night. This is a wonderful opportunity for Future Stars to get connected. Flyers and pamphlets will be provided to answer any questions about programs offered at Siegel High. Below is the agenda for March 3. 6:45-7:30- Walk throughout the school to gather information about all the opportunities that Siegel High has to offer. Be very thorough in the fine arts, career and technical classes, and foreign language offerings. 7:30-7:40- Locate the appropriate room by last name to start the program. 7:40-8:00- Welcome to Siegel High School- Mr. Creasy 8:00-8:10- Tennessee Diploma Project DVD and Hope Scholarship 8:10-8:30- Registration process- Mr. Ondrus YOU ARE STRONGLY URGED TO ATTEND!

2 SIEGEL HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ENGLISH-REQUIRED (Students will be placed based on Explore/TCAP scores) English I- This course offers language skills, which improve and promote the student s reading and writing abilities. Emphasis is placed on advanced skills to increase grammar efficiency, vocabulary, and spelling skills; to motivate students to read, discuss, and analyze literature; and to introduce students to research methods. Summer reading is optional. Honors English I- This course is designed for the accelerated student who wishes to place greater emphasis on literary analysis. Included are mechanics in grammar, an introduction to research methods, literary genres, accelerated vocabulary units, writing experiences, and a parallel reading program, which emphasizes works of literary merit. Additional works are required during the school year; summer reading is optional. Advanced Honors English I- This course is part of the sequential program leading to the Advanced Placement Language and Composition/Advanced Placement Literature and Composition class taken during the junior/senior year. In addition to the honors curriculum, this course requires a greater depth of analysis and accelerated reading; summer reading is required. BIOLOGY-REQUIRED(Students will be placed based on Explore/TCAP scores) Biology I- laboratory science course that investigates the relationship between structure and function from molecules to organisms and systems, the interdependence and interactions of biotic and abiotic components of the environment, and mechanisms that maintain continuity and lead to changes in populations over time. Students explore biological concepts through an inquiry approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry,Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics are taught in the context of the content standards for Cells, Interdependence, Flow of Matter and Energy, Heredity, and Biodiversity and Change. Honors Biology I- includes the same areas of study as Biology I but is designed for the student who needs a strong biological foundation for future studies or career choices. The student will be expected to demonstrate high skills in reading, writing and the ability to operate independently and as a group member, both in regular classroom operations, laboratory settings, and special assignments. Students will be expected to operate in a technology and laboratory rich environment. ALGEBRA- REQUIRED(Students will be placed based on Explore/TCAP scores) Algebra I- includes operations of Polynomials, applications of exponents including negative and zero, application of radicals, solving a variety of equations including absolute value, radicals, etc., solving, graphing, and applying inequalities, relations, linear functions, absolute value functions, systems of linear functions, permutations, combinations, algebraic rational expressions, and quadratic functions. Honors Algebra I- This course includes everything that is in the Algebra I course, but it has more depth and is taught at a faster pace. WELLNESS REQUIRED (SELECT ONE) Lifetime Wellness Wellness is a required course containing the following modules: Nutrition, personal fitness and related skills, mental health, disease prevention and control, sexuality and family life, substance use and abuse, and safety and first aid. JROTC I JROTC I begins the development of cadets into better citizens through a series of instructional blocks including physical fitness, leadership, hygiene and first aid, drill and ceremonies, map reading, oral and written communications, military history, study of the constitutional form of government, marksmanship, and drug education. Wellness modules are addressed. Extracurricular activities are offered in drill team, color guard, orienteering, rifle team, and adventure training in JROTC I-IV. (JROTC I + JROTC II meet the state graduation requirement for Lifetime Wellness and ½ credit of Physical Education.) SOCIAL STUDIES REQUIREMENT World History and Geography (Honors) This course surveys the historical background with a more concentrated focus from the Industrial Revolution to the modern day. Concentration is given to the problems, contributions, and personalities conducive to the flow of history. Students will also study people, places, and environments at local, regional, national, and international levels from the spatial and ecological perspectives of geography. A.P. Human Geography- The purpose of the AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth s surface. Students learn to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human socioeconomic organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Spanish I Honors, French I Honors, and Latin I Honors, These are introductory courses which will enable students to learn the basics of speaking, reading, writing, and understanding each individual foreign language. Two years of one of these languages is mandatory for all students.

3 FINE ARTS ELECTIVES- Students must complete one for graduation requirement Visual Art I Visual Arts I is a broad-based introductory course that stresses art elements and principles of design. Visual art studio areas, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics are taught. General Music This music course is for the non-musician who enjoys listening to music, as well as those with a background in music study seeking information outside of the performance arena. The course explores the role music plays in our lives including entertainment, dance, art, film, other cultures, religions, and musical theater. The course may also give basic introductions to music mechanics, ear training, theory, harmony, composition, chords, rhythms, analysis, history, and styles. Concert Choir (Men/Women) This class is a vocal music course, open to all ninth grade students. No audition is necessary. Basic vocal techniques and choral music are covered. Freshman Band/Color Guard Students will be placed by Siegel High Band Directors. Theatre Arts I-.The Theatre Arts I class involves learning the knowledge and skills of theater as a dramatic action. Students study historical genres, critique, create, perform and participate in a variety of theater-based learning experiences including acting in monologues, scenes, improvising, pantomimes, and working on theatrical productions creating a heightened awareness to the arts. This course may require after school rehearsals and performances that will be used as part of the evaluation process. ELECTIVES Introduction to Business and Marketing (1/2)-course in which students are introduced to all aspects of business and marketing: the domestic and international economies, financial principles, management strategies, administrative and information systems, ethics, and organizational and professional leadership. Students will analyze the elements of the business environment and focus on attitudinal and problem-solving skills inherent to success. Computer Applications (1/2)- This course is designed to develop computer technology skills. Students will use a variety of computer software and hardware tools and features of an electronic information network. Students will explore the social, business, and ethical issues of using computer technology. The students will develop skills that will assist them with efficient production of word processing documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations. Agriscience- Agriscience is a laboratory science course that prepares students for biology, subsequent science courses and postsecondary pursuits. The content area includes ecology, biological processes, sexual and asexual reproduction and a study of the chemical and physical laws that govern life processes. This course helps students understand the important role agricultural science serves as industry moves into the 21st century. Health Science Education This course is an introduction to broad topics that serve as the foundation for the health science cluster. The topics covered include growth and development, nutrition, medical terminology, history of health care, careers in health care and their educational requirements, safety measures, CPR, and first aid. Introduction to Human Studies foundational course for students interested in becoming a public advocate, social worker, dietician, nutritionist, counselor, or community volunteer. This course covers the history of counseling, career investigation, stress management, mental illness, communication, and the counseling process. Artifacts will be created for inclusion in a portfolio, which will continue to build throughout the program of study. Information Technology Foundations Designed to prepare students with skills for advancement in information technology career paths, Information Technology Foundations will consist of three sections including computer hardware and operating systems, network architecture, and web design. Students will gain introductory knowledge of computer systems, computer-system components, and operating systems. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer networking: determining system requirements, setting up equipment, and performing installation for end users. Digital Arts and Design I This course focuses on introducing the design, printing, photography, and commercial art industries. Topics covered include: elements and principles of design, careers, job safety, design and photography history, camera basics, design and photography composition, copyright & ethics, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign, Mac computer platform, and much more. This course is designed to create a firm foundation. Course content includes both traditional classroom and lab/project based content. Along with study of design principles, conceptualization processes and techniques, students will explore various applications of design through extensive study of typography, style, composition, visual elements, color, creative technical software and various problem-solving tasks, that encourages higher order thinking. Reading Content/Math Content- This class will count as an elective credit towards graduation. Students will be placed in this class based on low EXPLORE/TCAP scores. This course will provide a structure that will increase math/reading knowledge and content.

4 Principles of Law, Corrections, and Security-introductory course designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the fields of law enforcement, legal services, corrections, and security. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to identify careers in these fields, summarize the laws that govern the application of justice, and draw key connections between the history of the criminal justice system and the modern legal system. In addition, students will model the professional, moral, and ethical standards required of professionals in the fields of law, legal services, corrections, and security. OTHER INFORMATION Siegel High School registration will take place at Freshman Orientation. Tuesday, March 3, Freshman Orientation at Siegel High o 6:45-7:30- walk the school and gather information about all the possibilities that Siegel High has to offer. There will be booths set up to ask questions and collect information. o 7:40- all parents and students will be in a designated classroom to begin the program. o Mr. Creasy- opening remarks/introductions o Mr. Ondrus- 9 th grade registration. Students will be given their trial schedule with Explore Scores and Core classes (English, Algebra/Geometry, Biology) filled out. Student will then have the opportunity to select the remaining 4 classes. A trial schedule and course descriptions are attached as a reference to the classes that are available for freshmen. Science, English, and Math classes will be determined by EXPLORE scores. Some students will be placed in a Math and/or Reading Content class based on low EXPLORE and/or TCAP scores. If you choose to bump up (standard to honors or honors to advanced honors) in Biology, English, or Algebra I, an override form must be signed and returned with the registration form on March 3 rd. The student that decides to move up in classes must stay in that class for one semester. Should you decide at a later date that you wish to move up in classes, a form must be filled out and returned to Mr. Ondrus on June 3 rd. Students should select either social studies and/or a foreign language (some students choose both). Student must take Wellness or ROTC. Student may take one fine art. Student must choose 1 elective. Student must choose 2 alternate electives. Students not receiving a first choice class will automatically be scheduled into an alternate course Thursday, August 6, New Student Orientation at Siegel High-6:30. New students will pick up their schedule and visit classrooms. Friday, August 7, First Day for Students, Abbreviated day 8:10-10:10 Monday, August 10, First Full Day for Students 8:10-3:10 We plan on delivering a course request sheet to each 8 th grader before they leave for summer break. There will be two dates in the summer where a student may drop/add a course. A form must be filled out and turned in to the front office at Siegel High on June 3 or July 15. Siegel High summer hours are 8:00-11:30 Monday-Thursday (closed the week of July 4). Mr. Trey Ondrus, 9 th grade administrator, at ondrust@rcschools.net if you have any questions.

A student might be placed in Reading Content and/or Math Content class based on low EXPLORE/TCAP scores.
