1 International Business Maastricht Study programme profile: Focus The central theme of the International Business (IB) study programme is doing business across borders. IB prepares its students for an international career, in multinationals as well as SMEs. Students acquire broad knowledge of the disciplines which deal with international business. During the final stage of their studies students specialise in one of the following disciplines: strategic marketing, strategic management, international finance or supply chain management. Specific attention is devoted to IB students mastering multiple languages, (international and European) law, presentation techniques, research skills, and intercultural competences. The best students in the programme are offered a chance to participate in the so called IB Language and Culture lines that are derived from the geographical areas that IB wants to focus on (Europe, Russia, East Asia and Latin America). Intercultural and language skills have to become the student s unique selling point for a better position on the labour market among other students of International Business, Economics, Marketing etc. 1 The study programme of International Business focuses on doing business across borders, while maintaining strong roots in the EU Meuse Rhine region. Openness, innovation and practical orientation play a prominent role within the study programme. IB offers a global platform to the ambition of its students, alumni, employees, partners and other stakeholders. Mission The mission of International Business is to be a recognised centre of excellence in the realm of business education, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, innovation and the intercultural environment, in order to inspire and better prepare our students for the ever changing global business environment in which they will work. Competences IB graduates receive the internationally recognised title of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). The BBA standard, renewed in 2012, describes the competences which all BBA students need to acquire during their studies. IB has translated the BBA standard into its own set of competences to be achieved by the IB students and has chosen to completely internationalise these competences. 2 The competences can be divided into the following three categories. 1 Language and Culture lines: Introduction to Russia, Intermediate Chinese, Escolha Estratégica Brasil, Portal Profesional Hispano, Karrierechance Deutschland. 2 The International Business programme is the result of the merger of the former study programmes of IBL and IBMS of Zuyd Hogeschool in Its programme is unique in the field of universities of applied sciences. 1 I nternational Business Maastricht
2 1. International business competences which focus on societal and international orientation, split into International Business Awareness competences and Intercultural Awareness competences; 2. International core disciplines which focus on the international Body of knowledge (e.g. marketing, management, finance & accounting, supply chain management, and communication); and. International professional competences which focus on research orientation and professionalisation in an international environment. In line with the international professional competences IB has developed a set of IB values reflecting the professional attitude and behaviour of the IB student and alumnus. These IB values involve professionalism, initiative, passion, openness & diversity and inspiration, and they are based on the prerequisites of individual responsibility and personal attention. Curriculum Year 1 :International Business starts with a foundation programme, which covers the following themes: Introduction in International Business, Research, Finance & Accounting and International Environment. Apart from a solid basis of theoretical instruction in business related topics, the student will a be trained in a wide range of skills: conducting interviews, giving presentations, argumentation techniques, etc. He/she will also develop social skills by participating in the many group assignments the International Business study programme offers. Electives: During year 1 the students will have the opportunity to select some of the courses they will attend in order to complete the foundation programme. Students from the Dutch stream can choose one elective course, students from the English stream can choose two elective courses. The Language and Culture lines are part of this elective programme. Year 2: The second year programme continues with the subjects with which the student started in year 1 and he/she will continue to work on projects. These projects are linked to relevant professions in the field of International Business in order to improve the students image of their future job prospects. Team working skills and theoretical knowledge are developed by means of these projects, which are always of an international nature. Year : In the third year of studies the students have the possibility to participate in an international study exchange at one of the many partner universities abroad. The study exchange is optional. If the student decides not to go on an exchange programme, he/she expands his/her competences by attending one of the minors Zuyd has to offer. For more details see appendix 1 See appendix 2 2 I nternational Business Maastricht
3 Moreover, in year every student participates in a five month internship abroad. During this semester he/she will have to work and live abroad, to experience a different work environment and to gain international work experience. This internship abroad is a compulsory part of the IB bachelor s degree programme. Year : In the first two blocks of year languages and the specialisation courses are offered. The student can choose to attend one of these specialisations: Strategic Management: during this specialisation the student will learn how to set up the internal organization of a company by means of assignments such as how to design/apply a model for CSR implementation, how to design/apply a change management model based on a newly developed strategy, or how to design/apply a model regarding innovation. Strategic Marketing: during this specialization the student will learn how to arrange the procurement department, sales and marketing department of an organization, and how to improve conducting business with customers abroad. For example, he/she will learn how to write and implement an export plan, a procurement plan, a customer satisfaction plan, a sales plan, and so on. Finance: during this specialisation the student will learn how to financially stabilize his/her organization and to do business abroad. He/she will learn for example how to design and execute a cost price analysis, an activity based on a research plan, to write and implement an advisory report regarding foreign currency policy or to develop a financial and legal structure to work with staff abroad. Supply Chain Management: during this specialisation the student will learn how to prepare the logistics related departments of an organisation and how the entire supply chain in an organization must be adapted to do business abroad successfully. He/she will for example design and implement a vendor selection system for SMEs, write and implement a plan to reduce the supplier database for SMEs, develop and implement a system for incoming goods control, etc. Finally, students must do an internship which consists of real work activity participation on behalf of a company or organization and a real life company assignment. The proportion of real work participation and research assignment (the basis for a thesis) is 50% 50% in an optimum situation. These assignments and research projects should have an international dimension, requiring a strong theoretical basis. 5 Didactical approach Zuyd University of Applied Sciences has three basic principles underpinning the education that it provides. The International Business educational approach is based on Zuyd s overall educational approach 6. 1 A practice based learning environment. Students acquire knowledge and skills that equip them for optimum performance in their profession. 5 For more details see appendix 2 6 For more details see Educational approach IB I nternational Business Maastricht
4 2 Connecting practice based research and education. Students learn how to use research their own and others to contribute to innovations in their profession. Learning in communities. Our students are members of a community in which the culture of their chosen profession is demonstrated by example. IB has a theme based didactical approach. Each block revolves around one International Business related subject. This theme is based on a professional product which is leading in the theme. The theoretical modules (7EC) are supportive to this theme. In the Practice and Skills assignment (EC), which is part of each theme, the theory is put into practice in order to develop the professional product. Practice and Skills assignments are done through group work, mostly by groups of students. Classes are organized in the setting of tutorials in which students actively participate in the topic that is being taught or the skills that are being trained. The international classroom is an important aspect of International Business, Dutch and international students are placed in mixed groups to ensure the intercultural development of the students. Exams are a good mix of written exams, oral exams, papers and presentations. The way of teaching is changing very rapidly. IB challenges its students in class by different approaches such as the flipped classroom and case study based education. The digital learning environment is becoming more and more important, IB uses new ICT tools in order to stimulate the development of the student. An IB student is appointed a coach in course years 1 to. This coach will support the student in his/her professional development throughout its studies. In year 1 the student can choose between the Dutch stream and the English stream. The English stream is fully English taught. In the Dutch stream the instruction language is Dutch, but the literature and other study materials are in English. As from year 2, the entire IB programme is English taught. The practical approach and internationalisation are key within IB. In 201 IB was awarded the distinctive feature of Internationalization by the NVAO 7. Graduates Career perspectives: International Business trains its students for a wide range of international job positions in the fields of Commerce, Finance, Management and Supply Chain Management.
