1 Brief for Illustrator Graphic Designer Spaces for Dementia Project, Feature Wall Illustration and Graphics, Southmead Hospital, North Bristol Trust Willis Newson is working with Fresh Arts, the arts programme managed by North Bristol NHS Trust, to deliver the Spaces for Dementia Project which seeks to use art and interior design to make the environments of Elgar House and Level 5 of the Brunel Building more user friendly for elderly patients and those with dementia. We are looking to appoint a project Illustrator/Graphic designer to deliver a series of design features and artworks which provide a positive welcome, aid orientation, and motivate staff, volunteers, patients and carers to get involved with creative activity. Context An estimated 25 per cent of hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia. People admitted to hospital who also have dementia stay in hospital for longer, are more likely to be readmitted and more likely to die than patients without dementia who are admitted for the same reason. Care Quality Commission, Care update, Care Quality Commission, March 2013 On top of the very worrying statistics, is an awareness of the unmet emotional needs of elderly patients (not just those with dementia) within care of the elderly and complex care wards within the UK s hospitals. Experience can be poorly affected by a sense of depersonalisation, that is, a lack of knowledge of the personal history and individual preferences of a patient as well as a lack of opportunity for social interaction and stimulation. This can result in loneliness, boredom, apathy and depression. The design of the ward environment has a significant role in disempowering patients but at its best it can promote independence, individuality, exercise, social interaction, meaningful activities and sensory stimulation and, these in turn, can halt the rapid decline in health that can often take place. In March the NHS published its new Health Building Note Dementia Friendly Health and Social Care Environments (HBN 08-02). The document builds on previous guidelines (most notably provided by Stirling University) and provides a comprehensive set of core design principles and features to guide the design of the physical environment of hospitals and residential settings to ensure they are dementia friendly. The design principles, and examples of good practice, were identified through the evaluation of a series of pilot projects in hospitals and care settings. The HBN places high importance on the use of art, interior and landscape design, and especially the use of colour, texture, images, layout and signage to make hospitals less confusing and more able to promote independence, social interaction and meaningful activity for patients with dementia.

2 The Spaces for Dementia Project at Southmead Hospital Willis Newson is working with Fresh Arts to deliver the Spaces for Dementia Project which aims to use art, interior design and creativity as tools in delivering an improved patient experience. After consideration of current research and direct consultation with patients and staff in the Care of the Elderly wards in Elgar House and the Complex Care wards on Level 5 in the Brunel Building a number of art and design projects have been identified and both professional artists and students are being asked to respond to a series of briefs that promote the following: Cognitive stimulation, social interaction and reminiscence via artworks and activities Legibility and orientation within and around the ward spaces using visual cues Personalisation of individual bedrooms Mobility and purposeful walking Outline proposals will be presented to staff, tested with patients and publicly displayed at the Fresh Arts Festival on the 18 th and 19 th of September before final design work is completed and projects go forward to be installed between November 2015 and July This brief is for a professional Illustrator/Graphic designer and a budget has been ring fenced for both fees and production costs to deliver some specific outcomes within the broader programme. Please see the consultation report provided as an appendix for further information. Scope of the brief The Spaces for Dementia project is seeking to appoint a Project Illustrator, who also has graphic design skills, who is able to work with Willis Newson and other resident artists to deliver a series of art/interior design features in both Elgar House and the Brunel Building. We believe that illustration is an ideal way to engage with patients with dementia because: it has the power to promote powerful messages and tell personal stories it can offer clearly defined imagery that is easy to understand for people with visual and cognitive impairments it can offer levels of detail that can engage patients over a longer period it can reference local history and familiar places and people it can combine being playful and authoritative without being patronising it is flexible and can work well as both small scale prints or much larger architectural interventions using digitally printed vinyl wallcoverings The brief covers the following tasks 1 To design a feature wall that welcomes people to Elgar House and provides a focus for celebrating the achievements of older people. Perhaps around the theme of Made in Bristol, Music or Transport. The design will be digitally printed on durable vinyl and applied to a wall near the main entrance. 2 To design artwork to give a strong theme and identity to informal groups of seats in the areas at the end of each of the corridors on level 5, Brunel Building so that they can become a positive destination somewhere to go for patients who need exercise or want to walk. Once

3 there, the artwork could encourage reminiscence and conversation for those with dementia by referencing places they might have walked to in the past. The area provides a large window, table and chairs and access to the adjacent quiet room. The illustrator/graphic designer will be required to: Suggest themes such as at the end of the pier, by the docks or in the woods. Design a space that incorporates imagery as either a mural/wall graphics, a large framed image or collection of images. 3 To use illustration and graphic design to help create a series of attractive and motivating activity cupboards for both Elgar House and level 5 Brunel Building which will contain resource and activity kits as well as games, books and puzzles. They will be located in day rooms and quiet rooms and used by staff, visitors and volunteers to engage in activities with patients. The illustrator/graphic designer will be required to: Provide a welcoming design on the front of the cupboards that visually explains the contents of the cupboard and the activities it offers and inspires people to open the cupboard and have a go. Provide a graphic identity for labels on each activity kit box and a series of single sided A4 activity instruction cards targeted at volunteers and carers which will be used in the kits. 4 To use colour, contrast and illustration/graphic imagery to make the Occupational Therapy Kitchen in Elgar House more dementia friendly. This kitchen (which is currently predominantly white with poor levels of colour and contrast) is used in patient rehabilitation and assessment in preparation for them coping at home with daily routines. The illustrator/graphic designer will be required to: Identity ways to add colour and contrast to help distinguish different items and functions in the kitchen Provide surface design or imagery that helps make the kitchen more familiar to elderly patients perhaps referencing 1950 s style kitchens. Selection procedure: An open call for applications will be followed by interviews for shortlisted candidates. The panel will represent members of the project steering group including a dementia lead and ward staff. Timetable: July 15 Artist advertising August 15 Interview, appointment and briefing visits Sept 15 Submission and exhibition of draft designs October 15 Feedback and presentation and sign off of final designs Nov 15 July 2016 Installation of final pieces Budget: The fee offered for the project is: 5,000 Design fee 4,000 Materials, print, fabrication, installation etc.

4 Total: 9,000 Expressions of Interest: If you are interested in being considered for this project, please a pdf containing: 1. A short response to this brief, no more than one side of A4, outlining a draft approach to this commission 2. Examples of your previous relevant work 3. A current CV Please your submission to: The closing date for submissions is 31 st July 2015 Interviews will be held on 5 th or 6 th of August 2015 please assume your application has not been successful if you do not hear from us before this date. For more information or to discuss this brief in detail, please contact: Bronwen Gwillim Creative Director Willis Newson Tel
