KS2 Summer Concert Please Return School Library and Reading Scheme Books PSA News Miscellaneous A Message from Miss Bentham Dear Parents/Carers, It was lovely to see so many of you at the Summer Fair last weekend. It was a more compact fair, however it worked very well and we were still able to have all the events and stalls that we normally have. I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the PSA who contributed towards making it such a fabulous day. At the PSA AGM this week we said a very emotional and sincere thank you to the outgoing Chair Aine Breen, the Vice chair Ana Kozuh and class rep coordinator Zoe Strong. These parents have worked exceptionally hard in their time on the PSA and raised a huge amount of money that has benefitted the children who attend our school, thank you, you will be missed. The children had a fantastic week learning about many Anglican communities around the world. The number of countries and communities that they learnt about were shared with the rest of the school in a final assembly last Friday. Please see below for more information. I would like to thank Mrs West and Miss Matheson for their hard work in organising this, alongside the class teachers. There are a number of events taking place at school over the next few weeks one of which is the packing up of the school ready for the move into the new building. The first packing boxes arrive on Monday, so please excuse

2 the boxes you might see around school. I am sure that you all appreciate what it is like when you pack up a house and the scale that we are doing this on. I can assure you that the learning and teaching will continue as normal until the end of term and will not be disrupted by the preparations. you at Sports day next Friday as well as the Year 6 production of the Little Mermaid on Tuesday or Wednesday evening (tickets can be purchased from class reps). On Monday 18 th July it is open evening ( pm) which is an opportunity for your child to show you their hard work and introduce you to their new teacher. This is the last newsletter of the academic year, however there will be a Governor newsletter before the end of the academic year as well as communication with regards to the move to the new building. I hope that you all have a very enjoyable Summer and I look forward to welcoming you into the new building in September. Best wishes, Katie Bentham Queen s School Sports Day Timetable Sports Day Friday 15 th July 2016 KS1 Parents are welcome to come and watch our fun and games see the timetable below. All children will participate in a carousel of five activities organised by our Year 6 Sport Leaders. Each year group has a time slot and will move around the 5 activities during their session. Children will be doing their sport activities in the playground area and parents will able to view from around the perimeter, following the activities. Guidelines for KS1 parents: Please ensure that all children have a water bottle and a hat and are wearing sun screen. We ask that all parents remain in the area outside the sport arena, which will be marked out by cones Refreshments will be available for parents to purchase from The Governors stall Please do not give your child any snacks or drinks during the events. Any treats bought at the stall need to be kept until after school We ask that you leave promptly at the end of your child s activities We appreciate your support in this and hope you enjoy our morning of sport. Time Year Group Events am Reception Team games, using skills of throwing, running, balancing and jumping am Year pm Year 2 Timetable Sports Day Friday 15 th July 2016 KS2 - Kew Riverside School Field (see map below) Parents are welcome to come and watch see the timetable below 12.30pm KS2 Walk to Kew Riverside parent helpers will needed for each year group pm Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 All children will participate in at least 2 track events and a house relay - sprint or racket and ball. Children will choose their track events from: Sprint - Skipping - Sack - Racket and ball Each track event will run through each year group before moving to the next event. In this way children are kept as active as possible. We will not be having Champion races this year, as we have no space on site to fairly select the children. Instead children will have the opportunity to do a house sprint race. Clothing/ equipment Please can all KS2 children come to school in a T-shirt the colour of their house: Ennerdale yellow Sandycombe red Gainsborough-green Cumberland-blue

Please help us to make the event a pleasant occasion for everyone by following the guidelines below: Please stay behind the markers/cones on the side of the track and at the finish line. This allows a clear view of the track for all spectators and staff on the start and finish lines. Children will be presented with their awards in the area to the side of the track, where you will be able to take photographs. Please stay outside this area and move away when you have taken your photo to allow other parents through. Please do not give your child any snacks or drinks during the events. Any treats bought at the Governors refreshment stall need to be kept until after school. At the end of the event all children will return to school to their classroom for dismissal. We encourage all children to participate in the Olympic spirit of fair play, demonstrating our school values of love compassion and respect at all times. We appreciate your support in this. 4 Please Give Your Feedback on Assessment Procedures At the end of our first year of the new assessment procedures, we would welcome your feedback on some of the changes that we have introduced. All except EYFS parents will have received a letter in your child s report pack asking you to compete an online questionnaire about the new process. We really value your feedback on this so that we can further refine and develop it. You can find the questionnaire here Assessment Questionnaire Please submit your responses by Monday 18th July. Year 6 Present The Little Mermaid Jr back to top Year 6 will be performing The Little Mermaid Jr next Tuesday and Wednesday (12th and 13th July) in the Upper School Hall at 6pm. The performance, including interval, is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Tickets will be available for purchase by the school gates at drop-off and pick-up from Friday 8th July. Adult tickets are 5 and child tickets are 1. Please note that availability is limited, as tickets have already been on sale to Year 6 parents. From seeing a little of the rehearsals, it promises to be a spectacularly enjoyable production and we hope that as many of you as possible are able to attend one of the performances.

5 back to top Queen s School Summer Fair Our Summer Fair was a huge success last week with the weather smiling upon us. The food and drink was delicious and refreshing, the bake-off a treat, the silent auction was everything but silent with lots of er lots on offer, the toys and books were snapped up, the music was delightful, the maypole dizzyingly entertaining and the Yellow Brick Road Brick launch paved the way for a great fundraising campaign. A fabulous thank you to the PSA committee, the Class Reps, the stall helpers, the cooks, bartenders and baristas, the Governors, the Staff and of course all of you who turned up, enjoyed yourselves and spent your money! We raised over towards the Create a Brighter Future Campaign. back to top Year 3 Go From Stink to Drink! This week, Year 3 were lucky enough to be invited to The National Archives to try out a new project linked with the Thames Explorer trust entitled From Great Stink to clean drink. The day was spent looking at the effect of the environment on health in the 19 th century. We started the day looking at some letters and documents to find out about the health of the nation and decided we really would not like to have lived at that time! After lunch we made our way to the riverbank to see how clean the river was. We had to look for wildlife and the colour of the river and then we did some experiments to test the water. Finally we concluded that conditions are much better today and we were told that the River Thames is actually the cleanest river in the world! The children had a great day and felt very important when they had to complete evaluations and offer advice on how to make the day even better.

6 back to top Build The Yellow Brick Road We formally launched our Yellow Brick Road campaign at the Summer Fair. This is to build a pathway within the school of engraved bricks which will be a lasting memory of your family s involvement with The Queen s School. The bricks will be engraved with two lines of text with up to 16 characters (including spaces and punctuation) on each line. You can buy your brick with a donation of on the School Website here The Yellow Brick Road. 7 Global Anglican Community Week Last week the children took part in a special assembly to show the things that they learned about Anglican communities around the world. Each year group explored different elements of a country s culture and looking at its Anglican links. We had some fantastic presentations including a familiar hymn in the Zulu language, stories of life in a church in Ecuador, an amazing Haka from some Year 1 parents and many more. The children have really enjoyed finding out about the global Anglican communities and used a variety of means including, books, computers, tablets and just plain old fashioned asking questions! back to top

8 Reception Get on Their Bikes! Over the last few weeks our Reception children have been taking part in regular Balanceability cycle training. Balanceabilty is a special programme using ergonomic balance bikes - which are lightweight children s bikes with no pedals or stabilisers - children run along whilst seated and push off the ground to create forward propulsion and dynamic balance. The programme is designed to eradicate the need for stabilisers allowing children to learn to balance and ride a bike with much more confidence, much more quickly. The children have really enjoyed these sessions and have all received a pass certificate.

9 back to top KS2 Summer Concert The end of year KS2 concert was, as ever, an afternoon of musical delight. The choir and orchestras led by Mrs Gosal and Mrs Noyes and played beautifully enhanced by the magical setting of St Anne s Church. We d like to thank Mrs Noyes and all of the adult helpers and performers who give their time throughout the year to ensure that our children have the most amazing musical experience here at The Queen s School. back to top

10 Please Return School Library and Reading Scheme Books As we approach the end of term and start packing up ready for our move to the new building, we will be closing both the library and the Reading Scheme for the summer, by Monday 11 th July Please search at home for any books you may have hiding behind sofas or on book shelves, and return them to your class teacher by the date above. This applies in particular to school library books, as each year we have to remove many books from the system that have been lost or not returned. To keep reading skills going over the summer, please use your local library service PSA News Annual General Meeting back to top A huge thank you to those of you who attended the AGM on Wednesday, we had a great turnout and had some lively discussion about funding for the new 3G Astro pitch which was approved. We also said a goodbye to Aine, Ana and Zoe (Chair, Vice Chair, and Class Rep Coordinator respectively) as they came to the end of their two year tenure. It wasn t all sad though as we welcomed three new members of the committee: Chair - Lucy Steward Vice Chair - Elly Nahibha Class Rep Coordinator - Krystyna Tsochlas All are Reception parents, and Lucy also has a child in Year 3. Sporting Feet Offer & Voucher Sporting Feet have two shops in the area, Putney and Richmond. They offer great products and outstanding service and also useful hubs for information about sport in the local area. They have agreed a special 10% discount on all non-sale items for all Queen s parents and staff on production of the voucher below.

15 Live On: A new dance commission commemorating the 100th year anniversary of the Somme Friday 1 July 1pm & 6pm: Free event. On 1 July Richmond Riverside will be transported back to 1916 as characters, based on local women contributing to the war effort, face devastating news from the front line. Performed on the riverside, this promenade dance piece marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of the battle of the Somme and the devastating impact left by the loss of the men who fought & died during the battle.
