1 Global Education Office Vanderbilt University September 2010 Scholarship Opportunities for Vanderbilt Study Abroad Students See also the Study Abroad Scholarship Database at and the scholarships at For Minority Students AIFS Diversity Scholarship, Two AIFS Diversity Scholarships for 50% of the program fee and round trip air fare are awarded, one per semester. Three runner-up AIFS Diversity Scholarships of $2,000 each are also awarded each semester. Eligibility: Participation in an AIFS program; Self- identify as African-American; Asian- American; Hispanic-American; Native-American; Pacific Islander Deadline: April 15 for fall and academic year; October 1 for spring Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarship for Minority Students, The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), in cooperation with Diversity Abroad, are awarding grants in the amount of $2,000, $1,000 or $500 for undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted to a study abroad program in Turkey or Cyprus for an academic year, semester, or summer. Eligibility: U.S. Citizen; accepted to study for a semester at a Turkish University; must be willing to share experience with Turkish Coalition of America Deadline: Rolling Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship Program, &typeid=iipp&type=abut The purpose of the fellowship is to increase the representation of minorities in international affairs and global public policy in the government, private and non-profit sectors. Offer a 7- week summer global policy institutes and subsequent study abroad experience with a focus on international affairs. 1

2 Eligibility: U.S. Citizen or legal resident; self-identify as underrepresented student (African American, Hispanic, Asian American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander); minimum 3.2 grade point average; strong demonstrated interest in international affairs, public policy and language training; plan to pursue master s degree Deadline: March 15 John T. Petters Foundation, The John T. Petters Foundation seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for students who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. For fall, summer and yearlong programs Eligibility: U.S. Citizen pursuing a study abroad program that has a focus on international business; must demonstrate financial need Deadline: September 30 For All Students Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Eligibility: US citizen, in good academic standing, receiving a Federal Pell Grant and studying abroad for a semester or full year (summer programs not eligible). See complete list of requirements at the website. Deadlines: Generally due in February for the Fall term, and in August for the Spring. See the website listed above for exact dates. NSEP David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships, Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. (The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.) Covers study abroad during the summer, fall, and/or spring. Eligibility: U.S. Citizen 2

3 Deadlines: February 10 Requirements: The NSEP service requirement stipulates that award recipients work in the federal government in positions with national security responsibilities. The Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or any element of the Intelligence Community are priority agencies. John T. Petters Foundation, The John T. Petters Foundation seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for students who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. For fall, summer and yearlong programs Eligibility: U.S. Citizen pursuing a study abroad program that has a focus on international business; must demonstrate financial need Deadline: September 30 For Study in the Middle East American Jewish League for Israel Scholarship, The University Scholarship Fund of the American Jewish league for Israel is a scholarship program to assist students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to study in Israel. Amount: $2,000. Eligibility: U.S. Citizen or permanent resident studying at an applicable university in Israel Deadline: May 1 The William Jefferson Clinton Scholars Program, The William Jefferson Clinton Scholars Program at the American University in Dubai seeks to further the goals of the Clinton Presidential Foundation by strengthening the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence through its work in racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation. In partnership with AUD, the program gives US-based students the opportunity to expand their educational and cultural horizons by studying in the Arab world. Amount: Varies. Eligibility: U.S. Citizen or permanent resident studying at the American University in Dubai Deadlines: March 15 for fall; October 15 for spring; February 15 for summer 3

4 For Study in Western Europe The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships, Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany from four to ten months. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year. Eligibility: varies by award Deadline: January 28 Study & Internship Program (SIP) in Germany, UAS7, a consortium of 7 leading German Universities of Applied Sciences, is pleased to announce that our innovative joint scholarship program SIP (Study & Internship in Germany) is entering its second year. It is a unique educational experience involving one semester of study at one of our universities, followed by a six-month internship in a company or research institute in Germany. Eligibility: U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident; currently enrolled as Sophomore or Junior in one of these fields - engineering, science, life sciences; business, management, economics; architecture, art, design; journalism, social work. Deadline: February 15 For Study in Asia Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan, The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply. Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents; Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study. Deadline: Early April for following academic year 4

5 For Study in the Summer Critical Language Scholarship for Intensive Summer Institutes, Scholarship recipients receive complete funding to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. The program offers intensive overseas study in the critical-need foreign languages of Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Eligibility: U.S. citizen Deadline: January 25 The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship Program, The Awards are offered annually to three outstanding undergraduates from across the nation. Each student will be given the opportunity to spend a summer in a professional position with the United Stats Department of State. The three fellowship posts the Embassy in London, the Embassy in Paris, or the Office of the Secretary of State in Washington, D.C. The Harriman Fellowship Program is nationally competitive and highly selective. Offering an eleven-week service opportunity, as well as a $5,000 stipend for travel and living expenses. Eligibility: U.S. Citizen, junior or senior, acceptance into US Department of State Internship Program Deadline: November 1 For International Service-Learning Fund for International Service Learning, FISL is a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to students enrolled in or applying to international service-learning programs. $500 scholarship awards to students who can prove that they have been accepted into an accredited service-learning program. Eligibility: participation in an accredited service-learning program Deadline: November 15 (application period begins October 1) 5

6 Christianson Grant, Open to applicants who have sought out and arranged their own programs. Proposed programs must emphasize a work/volunteer component and cannot be independent research projects, nor can the work be done for academic credit. Amount: Awards ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents; ages 18-28; participation in a work, internship, or volunteer abroad program at least 6 months in length Deadline: March 15 (summer), July 15 (fall), and October 15 (spring) 6
