1 Beginning Guitar Syllabus: Ms. Hiroko Akaike Prerequisites: Student must be a beginner. Student must own their own acoustic guitar. Student must provide their own steel strings. I. Course Objectives: 1. be able to tune their instrument. 2. learn to read music. a.) traditional notation b.) tablature 3. be able to play simple melodies. 4. be able to play basic chords. 5. be able to teach/learn from fellow classmates 6. be able to play in an ensemble situation. 7. be able to play basic strum rhythms. II. Unit on electric guitar III. Independent research on the history of the guitar and/or accomplished guitar musicians. IV. Unit on finger picking. V. There is no text book. Students will make their own text book, throughout the year, in the form of a portfolio. VI. Learn basic music theory as is necessary to play guitar. 8 Music Classroom Rules: 1. Listen the first time instructions are given 2. Be respectful of yourself and others (Quiet when someone else is talking) 3. Be respectful of classroom music and equipment 4. Always have a pencil 5. Be on time 6. No gum, food, or drink 7. Participation is mandatory (If you are ill and cannot sing/play, notify the director before the class begins.) 8. Always use appropriate language Music Classroom Discipline (Refer to MHS Student Handbook) Beyond the MHS discipline guidelines, if any of the above music classroom conduct expectations are broken the following disciplinary actions will occur: Incident 1 Verbal warning (Name on the board for a week) Incident 2 Loss of participation points (-5 points), Student-teacher conference Incident 3 *Discipline Letter will be sent home (phone call home), Loss of participation points (-5 points)

2 Incident 4 Removal from class, Student-teacher- parents Conference Loss of participation points (-5 points) Incident 5 Administrative intervention and possible removal from class *Students have to complete a discipline letter describing what they did wrong and what they should have done instead. This letter will be sent home for a parent or guardian to sign. Severe Disruption: (fighting, use of profanity, destruction of property, disrespect shown toward adult, insubordination) Student will automatically be sent to the office. Grading will be as follows: Class participation (100 points daily every 9 weeks period) - 30%, Quarter Exam -10%, Written assignments -10%, Playing tests - 40%, Completion of a portfolio -10% Above the discipline guidelines, points will be added or subtracted as outlined below: Unexcused tardy to daily rehearsal -5 Loss of points after verbal warning -5 Extra Credit Approved outside concert and/or school music concert attendance with written review +5 Private lessons +2 per lesson Inside & Outside school auditions, music performances & solos +determined on (Examples: Community Theater, church choir/solos, etc.) individual basis Honor Code: I will not lie, cheat, steal, or assist others who do. Rewards: Praise (daily) Reward individual points for various accomplishments (daily) Positive notes sent home (random) Whole class music game time (reinforcement) Certificate (end of year)
