Provincial report 2010 Good afternoon and welcome to our annual Munster Ladies Gaelic football Convention here in the Maldron Hotel Limerick. Another year has passed and it is time to reflect on the 2010 season and plan for the coming year. The 2010 season saw many surprises and new Champions in several grades. Munster Ladies created several new iniatives beginning with Key2Coaching, the refereeing programme incorporating officials, Club 7s for our clubs of the Province, club Plate for clubs defeated in respective adult County finals, additional Post Primary competitions in the form of plates and our very own website munsterladiesgaelic.ie On field activities were on going with the various Post Primary competitions while in the board room coaching was our priority led by Michael Ryan. A number of meetings helped to formulate a plan to revolutionise coaching. After a series of meetings a draft was rolled out and the delivery of the first clinic took place at Monroe the home of Moyle Rovers on Saturday March 27 th. Cork s Noel O Connor put the Moyle Rovers u18 team through a typical team training session whilst Mary Beades and Nora Ahern highlighted the coaches techniques for the benefit of the attending participating coaches. The venture was an outstanding success and many thanks to Moyle Rovers club for their assistance throughout. Clinic two was held at the splendid surroundings at Spa GAA in Killarney on Saturday April 10 th again with Noel as the coach assisted by Miriam O Connell and William Harmon and thanks to Kerry Secretary Donal Barry along with the Spa club and players for their contribution. The third clinic was held in Glanmire GAA on Saturday May 15 th amidst nice sunshine. Eamon Ryan delivered the session assisted by Mick Myers and Irene Hogan with players from a number of clubs in East Cork. The concept has been very well received and the feedback has been excellent with the first two clinics videoed and subsequently a DVD was produced and it will be officially launched this afternoon and will be available for a modest fee of 20 by contacting the office. Many thanks to Peter Grant for his professional help with this worthwhile production. A mini preview of the DVD can be seen on our website as well as The appointment by Munster ladies of Pat Pigott to lead the programme for our referees and officials of the Province has been a huge boost to the association. Pat fills the position as Director of referees and has embarked on setting targets for improving

referees and refereeing standards at Provincial level. Part of the iniative is record keeping of our Provincial referees of all games officiated within their County thus enabling Pat to monitor and address the appointment of additional newly trained and qualified referees within our Counties. This iniative is of major benefit to each County board as it will help promote the appointment of relevant referees and ensure they are officiating within their capabilities. Pat feels that there is need for far greater cooperation and responsibility must be taken by the County boards and there referee s coordinators to proceed at the speed and professionalism that is required in these challenging times thus enabling Counties benefit long term. Munster referees & Officials Munster has embraced the modern technological era with the appointment of Kevin Preston Master of the website. Kevin s workload has been immense and the care and attention given to his post is visible for all to see. It has added a superb source of information for our proud Province and members. We acknowledge the importance communication plays with our association and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure the information and contact data is freely available to all members and visitors of our site. This will only work with the cooperation of the County Boards and there clubs and for 2011 we ask that each County board submit the requested information to the office as this will benefit all concerned. Website Dave Colaiste Choilm Munster ladies in line with advice taken from Peter Hannon advisor with our Strategic Plan last February have updated the Crest and carry the colours of black /Blue/white on leisure gear. Game on and evenly contested however it was only a warm up until Kerry kicked into 7 th gear and at the break had a comprehensive lead. The anticipated Cork comeback never materialised and it was Kerry all the way with an unbelievable finish on a scoreline of 5-11 to 0-03 with Nicole O Connor Kerry the player of the final and Jason Mullins referee. Limerick had a home venue having accommodated Leitrim with a change of date and on Wednesday July 7th at Croagh with Leitrim winners 4-11 to Minor B Captains Minor A Captains Minor A Player final Aisling & Paula Aisling & Dan Sinead & Niamh Orla & Dan The Munster Intermediate TG4 Championship began on Sunday June 20 th with Waterford defeating Cork at Dungarvan and referee Sean Joy thus putting Waterford into the final against Limerick who initially received a bye. The Munster final played at Castletownroche on Saturday July 3rd and Waterford defending their title which they duly did after a very competitive game Waterford winners 2-12 to Limerick 1-11 with Linda Wall Waterford named player of the final and referee Mike O Keeffe. The Intermediate All Ireland series started a few weeks later this year with Waterford playing in group A the first game on Sunday July 11 th and a home game against Roscommon and an easy win 5-20 to Round 2 had the Deise County travelling up north to Casement Park where they defeated the home County Antrim 2-17 to Round 3 a home venue at Carrig Beg where they had an easy victory over Kilkenny 8-23 to 1-01, Round 4 took them to Emmet Park, Kiloe and a share of the spoils with Longford Waterford 3-10 Longford Waterford topped group A and played second place Group B in the All Ireland semi-final on Saturday August 28 th and this game televised live on TG4 at Dr Cullen Park Waterford 1-14 Cavan 0-10

and Elaine Power Waterford player of the game. All Ireland final at Croke Park on Sunday September 26 th Waterford 0-16 Donegal 2-12 in a most exciting final and disappointment for the Munster champions. The TG4 Junior All Ireland series saw Limerick in action in group A on Sunday July 27 th at Mucklagh, Co. Offaly and the visitors had a comprehensive victory 8-24 to Offaly 1-01 Round 2 against Carlow at Tinryland again a landslide score 9-23 to 2-03 on Sunday August 8 th. Round 3 had Limerick with a home venue opposing Derry on Sunday August 14 th at Monaleen and victory was easy with a 2-17 to 1-03 scoreline ensuring they qualified for their second semi-final, this was played on Saturday August 28 th at Freshford and Wexford their opponents with victory for the Treaty County 1-12 to 0-08 and Sandra Healy Limerick player of the game. All Ireland final day at Croke Park on Sunday September 26 th and the finalists of Limerick and Louth to open proceedings for a full day of activity. Conditions superb for football and a cracking game was served to the spectators and finally Limerick captured their very first All Ireland adult title winners 4-10 to 3-08 and Marie Claire Curtain Limerick player of the final. The Munster TG4 senior semi-finals were played on Saturday June 19 th with Clare hosting Tipperary at Cooraclare and easy winners 3-14 to 2-05 referee Mike O Keeffe while further South Cork hosted Kerry at CIT and finally the defending champions got over the line 2-08 to 1-06 and referee Keith Delahunty. Munster senior final at Castletownroche on Saturday July 3 rd and Cork chasing a seventh consecutive title and Clare back in a senior final after a lapse for a number of years. However it was not going the way of the underdogs and a penalty to Cork in the early stages did not help their cause however it was not to be as Cork added further goals to run out winners 5-13 to 2-09 with Valerie Mulcahy Cork player of the final and Sean Joy referee. The All Ireland qualifiers had a double victory for Munster Counties on Monday August 2 nd at Banagher, Co. Offaly when Tipperary had an easy victory over Meath 2-16 to 0-09 and Mairead Morrissey player of the game. Kerry had a single point victory over Mayo 0-12 to Sunday August 8 th Kerry made the long journey to Athlone and winners over Armagh 1-19 to 2-07 while back down at Claughaun Tipperary and Clare again met and victory for Clare 2-15 to Kerry head back to Banagher on Saturday August 14 th against Galway and again the Munster county winners 2-09 to 1-11 and Bernie Breen Kerry player of the game. Clare faced up to Dublin and gave a good account of themselves and at times during the game had opportunities but experience cannot be bought and this eventual All Ireland champions had to run out winners 2-18 to Saturday August 21 st Cork headed to Banagher to defend their title against Tyrone in the quarter final and shockwaves went through the association when they were defeated 3-11 to 0-13 on a day when injuries played a major part however Tyrone deserve credit as they were not fazed facing the champions and played to their potential. Despite their loss Cork have been superb champions and there is no doubt but the 2011 season will see them return with their own mission. Kerry the only Munster County still involved and on Saturday September 4 th at Ballymahon, Co. Longford and no lesser opponents than Tyrone in their way. Kerry got the worst possible starts and trailed until talented minor Lorraine Scanlon took the game to Tyrone and drew the sides level and after a ding dong battle both sides finished level Kerry 2-13 Tyrone 3-10 and onto a replay. Saturday September 11 th again Banagher the venue and the Kerry fairy-tale ended when they had the chances and again a very slow start but played themselves back into the game

and goals win games as we have seen so many times and Tyrone got the one that would push them through by the minimum 1-09 to 0-11 with Aisling Leonard Kerry player of the match. For the first time in five years no Munster County would contest the All Ireland senior final. Keith Delahunty Tipperary had the honour of refereeing his first senior All Ireland and also Munster were represented in spirit as Michael Ryan was a member of the Dublin management but unfortunately for Michael he was tied up with his position as Manager of De La Salle senior hurling squad who had a quarter final game fixed for the same day at almost the same time as the All Ireland game at Croke Park. Despite the contacts with the Waterford GAA Chairman and some other officers of the board as well as Munster Chairman Sean Walsh making representation to the GAA board on the matter. However it also transpired that the Tallow GAA club sportingly agreed to play the game on Saturday to allow Michael firstly attend to see his three daughters line out for their beloved County of Waterford in the intermediate final and then to take his place with Dublin on the line. However the GAA board insisted on the game going ahead on Sunday as scheduled. It beggars belief that a County who in the past under a different board always ensured that no domestic games were fixed the same day as their sister board were in Croke Park, different people with short sighted vision and many broken promises. The Aisling McGing memorial championship saw Kerry enter a team in this competition but the final had Cork back for the fourth consecutive year defending their title against Dublin. The games for the Munster Counties unfolded as follows on Sunday July 18 th Cork 0-08 Dublin 1-08 at Fermoy while Kerry travelled to Skryne, Co. Meath only to lose at the death Kerry 0-12 Meath Sunday August 1 st Cork played Galway at Tuam and winners 7-16 to Kerry hosted Galway at Abbeydorney on Sunday August 15 th and were defeated comprehensively 0-06 to The same day Cork had it easy over at Fermoy when they defeated Meath 6-21 to Sunday August 22 nd Kerry travelled to Dublin to play the locals at Ballyboden but were defeated 3-15 to Saturday August 28 th Cork hosted neighbours Kerry at Banteer and the local s winners 6-22 to All round robin games completed saw Cork into the semi-final and a home venue for the defending Champions on Sunday September 5 th at CIT versus Galway. The visitors played very well but at the final whistle were short 2-08 to The final at Cashel Co. Tipperary on Saturday September 18 th on this occasion the challengers laid down a marker and captured the County s very first adult title comprehensively 1-12 to 0-04 at Cashel. Cork have been great champions and credit to Dublin despite the three previous final defeats they were not to be denied on this occasion. A sincere thanks to you my fellow officers of Dan, Michael, Dan Cannon, Nathalie, George, Mary, Pat and Liam and to Brian, Tony, Gene, Kieran and Elaine who were tremendous with the help and support you gave throughout our club championships. All our games were well covered with officials available and to Mary who ensured on club final days that supporters alike were catered for with refreshments. Thanks to our ball girls of Lauren, Shauna, Grace, Orla, Sarah & Lauren, wearing their special Munster ladies ball girl jersey and this also added to the occasions of our club finals. A very special thanks to both Kilrush and Cahir ladies clubs who epitomised what is good of the club spirit and the support they gave us during the year on events hosted by the association will forever be remembered, and we wish you continued success in your club development. The production of full colour programmes for our finals was a

further addition for the year and thanks to all the clubs involved who cooperated so freely to ensure it was a success. Ball girls at Ballyagran Ball girls at Charleville Kilrush Club Officials The Munster Tesco Junior club championship began with one quarter final game on Saturday September 11th with Newmarket on Fergus Clare defeating Eire Og Cork at Ballyagran 2-10 to 2-04 referee Mike Duffy. The second quarter final was moved to Sunday September 12 th due to Kerry s replay on the 11 th. However at Croagh an entertaining game was served by two very competitive club sides and after extra time the sides were level Moyle Rovers Tipperary 1-10 Listowel Emmets Kerry 2-07 referee Gene Buckley. The replay took place on Saturday September 11 th at Glanworth and again very little between the teams but at the final whistle Moyle Rovers four points ahead 2-09 to Listowel Emmets 2-05 and referee Derek Carroll. The semi-finals were played on Saturday October 2 nd at Cahir Moyle Rovers had an easy win over Clashmore Kinsalebeg 6-18 to 1-13 referee Gene Buckley whilst at Kilrush goals were a plenty when Newmarket On Fergus defeated Fr Caseys limerick 7-11 to 5-03 referee Mike Duffy. The final played at Dr Mannix Park, Charleville on Saturday October 16 th Moyle Rovers defeated Newmarket On Fergus 3-12 to 1-08 with Shauna O Brien Moyle Rovers player of the final and Seamus Mulvihill referee. Moyle Rovers made the trip across the Irish Sea to Manchester where they accounted for St Oisin s Manchester 1-12 to 0-04 on Saturday October 30 th. The journey came unstuck on Sunday November 7 th at Mountbellew when the Munster champions were defeated 2-10 to 0-12 by Caltra. Sinead Kelly West Clare Gaels Ballymacarbry senior B Club Champions The Munster Tesco Intermediate club championship had only five clubs compete due to Dungarvan withdrawing so West Clare Gaels went into the semi-final. However the scheduled quarter final of Cappawhite Tipperary and Rosscarbery Cork went ahead at Ballyagran on Saturday September 11 th and Rosscarbery progressing due to a powerful second half display 3-09 to 2-08 referee Kevin Martin. The semifinals were played on Saturday October 2 nd with Rosscarbery and Dr Crokes Kerry

serving a thriller at CIT and again Ross came strong in the final quarter to progress to the final on a score of 2-12 to 1-09 and referee Kevin Martin. Back down at Kilrush West Clare Gaels Clare and Athea Limerick battled and it was clear from the start that the Clare champions meant business holding a commanding lead at the break and at the end were outright winners 4-13 to 2-08 in front of a huge local support. The Munster final was on Sunday October 17 th at Ballyagran and again the Gaels had a huge following support as did the Cork champions. However there was no way back on this occasion for Ross as the Gaels winners 3-14 to 2-05 and Sinead Kelly West Clare Gaels player of the final. The Munster champions also had to make the journey to London on Saturday October 30 th at Ruislip for the quarter final and were winners 4-12 over Parnell s 2-08 and a home venue at Doonbeg where they entertained St Patricks Leitrim again in front of a huge local support and made light work of the challenge 5-19 to 3-09 on Sunday November 7 th in the All Ireland semi-final with Maria Kelly player of the game. All Ireland final day Sunday November 21 st at Nenagh West Clare Gaels against St Conleths Laois on a bitterly cold sunny day. The Munster champions were first on the scoreboard and it took until ten minutes before the break before they put some daylight between themselves and the Leinster champions. The sin binning of the Conleths captain did not help their cause as the movement of the Munster champions was creating many problems. The final whistle was greeted with joy and relief for the team and management not to mind the massive volume of people that had travelled to support the girls on this their final journey. West Clare Gaels 3-09 St Conleths 0-08 and Shauna Harvey West Clare Gaels player of the final. Congratulations to all involved and enjoy the celebrations and continued success to all involved. The Munster Tesco Senior club championship opened on Saturday October 2 nd at Cahir with Ballymacarbry Waterford and Brian Borus Tipperary in Round 1 of the B championship and it was a tight game up to the final quarter with Ballymacarbry finishing strong 2-13 to 1-09 winners and Sean Joy referee. The B final was played on Saturday October 9 th at Ballyhooly with Gene Buckley referee. This game required extra time and at the end it was still level which required a second period of extra time and finally at the end of a superb game Ballymacarbry 2-21 Southern Gaels Kerry 2-17 with Rebecca Hallahan Ballymacarbry player of the final. Munster final day at Dr Mannix Park, Charleville on Saturday October 16 th Inch Rovers Cork and Ballymacarbry served up a thrilling competitive game of exciting football. Both sides had a chance to clinch the title at the death but on the day a draw was a fair result with Michelle McGrath Ballymacarbry player of the final and Mike Duffy referee. The replay was played on Saturday October 23 rd at Bushy Park, Dungarvan and Inch Rovers made no mistake on this occasion when they took control of the game from the early stages and had a comfortable win 5-13 to 2-11 with Jessica O Shea Inch Rovers player of the replay and Keith Delahunty referee. Munster senior club champions Inch made the long journey north to Donegal on Sunday November 7 th to Termon and had three points to spare at the final whistle 2-12 to The original date of Sunday November 28 th was not an option due to TG4 covering the Rugby Magniers league and TG4 cover the senior club final for a deferred showing was moved to Sunday December 5 th however with the deterioration of the weather throwing up freezing tempetures and snow falls the game finally went ahead at Cashel on Sunday December 12 th. Inch Rovers led from start to finish and had to defend in a disciplined manner for the final quarter to ensure their hard work did not disappoint.

However at the third time of asking Noel O Connors charges finally won the title 0-09 to Carnacon 0-08 with Annie Walsh player of the final. 1 st Year Blitz A sincere thanks to our Post Primary committee led by Chairman Dan O Mahony with a special mention to the teachers and school games officers as well as the many club personnel throughout the Province developing and helping our game to progress within the schools. Thanks to James Doran for his work and help with the post primary schools over the past number of years and best wishes to him as he stepped down during the year. Dave Daly has replaced James and Dave is contributing with his experience to the position. Our Post primary schools participants have increased once again this year and with the introduction of a plate competition in all grades throughout will allow for more champions to come to the fore in the Province. The website is a major contributor to the schools and organisers detailing all group games and allows for more accurate records for the Province going forward. We are also looking at an All Star process for our schools in the Province and I am currently in consultation with my Ulster colleague Mary in relation to this. Ulster are in the second year of the Post Primary All Stars and are interested in the other Provinces including this in their brief which would lead to an inter provincial tournament for our schools as is currently being provided for our County players. International Blitz New York here I come usually means we are on the way over but on this occasion it was the Ladies Gaelic football teams of New York who made the journey for the third year in a row to the Sunny South East for a training week for their minor and u16 teams. It was the first year the Munster Ladies Gaelic football association was involved and on a very wet and windy day at the splendid facilities at Carriganore Training Centre for Excellence at the Waterford Institute of Technology clubs and Counties attended and participated in the different blitz age groups. Kerry club Southern Gaels made the long journey to the other side of the Province and well worth the four and a half hour bus journey as they won out the minor competition defeating New York in the final. The New York u16s went one better than their older colleagues when they won their respective age group. However all participants were winners as each and every participant was presented with a special commossioned medal by Munster Ladies Gaelic football. The goal of these training camps for the New York Ladies is to enter and participate in the All Ireland junior championship and this they may have achieved as they are entered in the 2011 championship. Waterford and Tippeary u16 County teams participated as did a number of local clubs in Waterford.
