11 11 Customer: VTI Technologies Customer reference: Removing obstacles of miniaturization of electronic devices Challenge: How to develop quartz resonators in order to reduce the size and weight of electronic devices and improve their performance. Solution: Developing a new micro-resonator in which the quartz crystal is replaced with silicon. Key benefits: Hundred times smaller resonator, enabling smaller and lighter devices. Signal quality is superior to quartz crystal and the performance is extremely stable. Opening up new opportunities e.g. for miniature wireless devices, biometric identifiers and slimmer displays.

21 21 Emission measurements Industrial emission measurement One of the most challenging and still partly unresolved demand in environmental analysis is the measurement of the volatile organic compounds (VOC). VOCs are normally present as mixtures and in low concentrations The VOC-directive (Directive 99/13/EC) sets very strict limits (in some cases below 1 ppm) CO2 and water vapour disturb the measurements
22 22 Airborne measurements Imaging spectral signature instrument European Space Agency needed a spectral imaging instrument whose data can be processed optically on line so that the target image is visible immediately after downlink of satellite data to the ground station.
23 23 Airborne measurements Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) layout (Courtesy of TNO-TPD). OMI includes VTT's scientific CCD - the instrument is currently flying onboard NASA EOS-AURA satellite creating ozone maps of Earth's atmosphere with high resolution.
24 24 Customer reference: Carbon dioxide under control Customer: Vaisala Group Challenge: More accurate and reliable measuring of carbon dioxide concentrations in air Solution: Together with Vaisala Group VTT has developed a new measuring method For determining the carbon dioxide concentration in air. Based on the use of extremely small micromechanical components, the method omits the need for wearable parts that require maintenance
