1 In-the-Hoop Photo Frames Click on the image to the right to see the free video tutorial, or read below for written instructions. Video is viewed best in Internet Explorer with a high-speed connection, and Windows Media Player. When you download a photo frame design you'll find three files. Two of the files end with "_DL" -- that stands for "dieline." If you have embroidery software, open the dielines (one at a time) and print them. You'll use these a little later to cut the fabric and interfacing for the frame. 2 Load one of the dielines into your machine, and sew it onto the paper. Repeat this for the second dieline. Make a "sandwich" with cutaway stabilizer on the bottom, fabric in the middle and the front piece dieline printout/sewout on top. You can put a bit of spray adhesive between each layer to keep the pieces together. Cut the dieline shape from the fabric and stabilizer. 3 Now we'll make a piece for the back of the frame using a piece of medium-weight interfacing, and the back piece dieline template. Place the back piece dieline template on top of the interfacing, and cut around the outside of the shape. The fabric and stabilizer for the frame front is ready, as is the interfacing for the back of the frame. Now we can begin to embroider the design. Hoop a piece of mediumweight, tear-away stabilizer. Load the full embroidery file (one starts with an "X" followed by 4 numbers - this is the design file) into your machine. Begin to embroider the design. The first thing to sew will be another dieline. This is a running stitch outline that traces the shape of the design. file:///f /source/elprojects/html/pr1080.html (3 of 8) [6/10/2011 3:42:03 PM] 3

4 Spray the backside of the fabric/stabilizer for the front of the frame with a bit of spray adhesive. Place that in the sewn dieline. The next thing to embroider will be a tack down stitch. 5 Other parts of the design will sew next, including the inner border and one end of the outer border. On the color change sheet you'll see a note pretty close to the end that says "back piece tack down." When you get to this point, stop the machine. Spray a bit of adhesive on each corner of the interfacing. 6 For the next steps we used bobbin thread that matched the top thread. This makes the frame look great from every angle. Attach the hoop to the machine and continue embroidering the design. The next thing to sew will be a tack down stitch on three of the sides of the frame. This tack down stitch binds the interfacing to the design. 7 After the design has finished, unhoop the stabilizer and tear it away from the inside and outside of the frame. You can attach magnets to the backside of the frame (this is optional).
