3 seam allowance SPINNING WHEEL section foundation I first learned to sew when I was a child thanks to my mother and grandmother, both of whom sewed clothing expertly. I followed suit and started sewing clothing, and while I still sew for my girls occasionally, I found more room for creative expression and design in quiltmaking. I particularly love the challenge of designing paper-pieced blocks and the freedom it gives me to create designs that would be more difficult to piece in a traditional manner. I designed this block to include four identical paper-pieced sections with a rotary-cut center block. They are assembled using a partial seam technique which gives the block the appearance of one that is difficult to assemble and yet, it is not. Choosing fabrics 0 Amy Friend The blocks of the Spinning Wheel quilt form a primary and secondary pattern. The primary pattern is the wheel shape, the design in the block. When the blocks are sewn together a secondary pinwheel pattern is created that makes the wheels seem to spin. Your eyes will play tricks on you by focusing on one design, and then the next, and back again. The gray-tone accent wheel pulls your eye back to the wheel shape. 76 American Quilter September 0
4 Piecing the blocks With your fabric precut, paper piecing of the block sections goes fairly quickly. Make 00 accurate copies of the foundation (page 76). Paper piece 96 sections using the precut #, #, and # teal pieces and # white pieces. Paper piece sections using the precut # and # gray pieces, # black pieces, and # white pieces. Note: See my instructions for Spinning Wheel paper piecing on page 79. The block is assembled using a partial-seam technique. First, lay out the sections for the block (paper-side up) and a white ½" x ½" square (fig. ). Working counter-clockwise, sew the next sections to the block, this time stitching the entire length of the seam (fig ). Press all seam allowances toward the white square. Repeat for all sections. Complete the seam between the first section and the last (fig. 5). Press. Fig. Fig. Fig. 5 Starting in the lower left corner, join the square to the paper-pieced section (right sides together) with a short seam. Only stitch in about " and backstitch. Figure shows the seam from the whitesquare side of the assembly. Press the seam allowances toward the square. This is your partial seam. Make main blocks using teal sections (fig. 6). Make accent block using gray/black sections. Fig. Fig. 6 September 0 American Quilter 77
5 Assembling the quilt center Referring to the quilt assembly diagram, lay out the blocks in 5 rows of 5 blocks. Join the blocks into rows. Pin at each matching seam before stitching. Press all seam allowances for the first, third, and fifth row to the right. Press the seam allowances for the second and fourth rows to the left. Join the rows, again pinning at each matching seam. Quilting and finishing Remove all the papers from the back of the quilt blocks. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste the layers together. Figure 7 is a close-up showing my quilting. I chose a combination of swirls and pebbles which evoke the ocean, as do the colors of the quilt. I used this pattern throughout the wheels. The quilting patterns don t accentuate either the primary or secondary design. I liked how they played as equals and didn t want to change that. If you prefer to emphasize one design over the other, you can quilt each color within the wheel differently. The end result will be a more pronounced pinwheel design. I quilted the accent block differently to draw the eye back to the pinwheels. In this block I stitched tiny pebbles in the darkest spokes of the wheels and simple swirls in the other sections. The white areas of the quilt are stitched with simple squares. Sew the binding strips together to make 50" of continuous binding. Finish the edges of your quilt with double-fold binding. To display your quilt, make a sleeve and sew it to the back of the quilt. Fig. 7 Please respect copyright laws. 6 Spinning Wheel paper piecing Put a size 90 needle in your sewing machine and set the stitch length to.7, or 5 to 0 stitches per inch. The larger needle and smaller stitches will make it easier to remove the paper pattern later. First, pin fabric patch # to the paper pattern over area #. For this section use a precut light teal # patch. The fabric should be right-side up against the wrong (unprinted) side of the pattern (photo ). Pinning the fabric to area # on the pattern will help hold it in place while you prepare to add fabric to area #. Locate the fabric patch for the next area, in this example the medium teal rectangle for area #. Working from the wrong (unprinted) side of the paper pattern position the patch over the area it is supposed to cover. Tip: Hold the fabric and pattern up to a bright window or light to help you see the seam lines on the other side of the paper as you position the patch. The fabric patch must extend at least ¼" around the perimeter of the area to be covered. After positioning, fold under the fabric along the seam line between the previous patch # and the area you will be covering with this piece of fabric (photo ). Photo Photo September 0 American Quilter 79
7 Extraordinary textile arts books Carefully unfold the patch so the fabric pieces are right sides together (photo ). Hold securely while you turn the piece over and stitch on the line between the areas (# & #) from the paper side. Trim the seam allowances to ¼" and press. Quilt National 0 Photo 5 Jane Sassaman After the section is complete use a rotary cutter and ruler to trim the block on the outer line of the paper pattern (photo 6). Photo Noriko Endo Follow the same steps to add other patches in ascending order. Photos and 5 show placement of patches # and # respectively before sewing.
