1 HAVING A POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE As you grow older, you will experience more and get to know yourself better. It is important to have an open-minded curiosity about yourself, your skills and feelings, so that you can find out as much as possible about yourself. If you think negatively about yourself, it will be very hard to explore yourself and find out exactly who you are, because you will only notice the things that you don t like about yourself. 2 Even though every person has weaknesses, these weaknesses can often be worked on, or even accepted. So remember, finding out that you are not that good at something is not the end of the world. Every person has things that they are not good at. If you know yourself well enough, you will be able to stand up for yourself and weather the storms of life. Key Concepts Self Confidence: having confidence in yourself and your abilities. Self Esteem: having respect for, or a favourable opinion of yourself. 3 How Others Influence Your Self-Image It is true that all people have different opinions and ideas. People can t always get along and they can t always agree. When you pay attention to what others say about you, you can learn a lot about yourself if they are trying to help you. If an adult or another child does not like you however, they might say negative and mean things about you and to you. This can be difficult to handle and understand, as people are not supposed to go out of their way to hurt others. During these times, it is important to know who you are and who the people are that accept you and support you. If an adult is unkind to you, it does not mean that they are necessarily right, just because they are an adult. That is why it is important to figure out who and what you are for yourself, so that you can believe in yourself, even in times when other people knock you down. 4 Your Personal Success and Self-Image Taking risks and exploring new skills and talents are ways of finding out what you are good at. Every time you do something well, whether it is sport, academics or relationships, the feeling of getting something right, will help you to feel more and more positive about yourself. Even situations where you try something new and don t complete it successfully, can help you to build your self-esteem. Not everyone has the courage to try new things. Trying, just trying, already shows that you are a strong person, willing to become who you are meant to be, even if it might be difficult sometimes. Version 1: June 2013 Copyright My Cyberwall
5 Building a Positive Self-Image Try the following: Focus on who you are -forget about what people think you should be and just be yourself. Look after yourself- be proud of who you are, be neat and tidy as a person. Be honest with yourself-know what you are good at and what you are not good at. It does not help to lie to yourself! Make time for yourself - growing up can be a serious business, don t forget to have some fun! Have goals goals that are your own and that you work towards. Take a stand - if you really believe in something, speak your mind. Celebrate successes - when you achieve success, celebrate! Dear Diary The My Cyberwallgang share some of the things that helped to build their self-esteem: Quinton: Doing something that is difficult for me and either getting it right or doing a bit better than the previous time, makes me feel good. 6 Stacey: I feel good about myself when I help my friends or animals. I try to be kind, especially to kids that seem lonely. They are usually so happy to have someone to talk to for a change, and they are usually good people, just a bit different. So I like finding out about people s differences. I also enjoy volunteering at animal shelters and giving a bit of love to those animals that have been hurt. Roxy: I enjoy playing music, especially the guitar. I figured out that I am not only good at playing guitar, but also writing my own songs. These songs sometimes make other people feel better. I write about stuff that I have gone through myself and jam with my friends and they seem to be able to relate to it. They sometimes give me new ideas for songs and they love it when I create a song based on their ideas. Music can be a powerful way of connecting and I don t think I have always appreciated my gift enough. It really makes my heart and soul feel good. Evelyn: I really feel good when I write. I used to write a journal, just ranting and raving about the things that go wrong in my life, but nowadays, I write about other things. My English teacher has given me some tips on writing because she says that I have a good writing style. I write stories and just enjoy losing myself in the words. I have started writing poems for my family and friends on their birthdays, pointing out what I like about them. It really does seem to touch their hearts, but more than that, it also helps them to express their emotions towards me. Writing seems to help to get communication going and in that way, bring people closer together. It makes me feel proud to help people connect with each other. Percy: As much as I love being good at sport and winning, it feels even better to help other people to reach their goals. I have started a club at school where I help coach younger kids in cricket and rugby. It is awesome to see how their performance improves and how much joy it brings to them. 7 Mark: I really feel good about the fact that even though my family life is not always great and I have been beaten and told bad things by adults, I have managed to turn things around. I have found people who support me and can see the good in me. I am now able to control my anger, be actively involved in school activities and walk with my head held high. I also use boxing as a positive way to use my energy and I am doing quite well. I really think I have come a long way and feel much better about myself. Hope: For a long time, I thought that I was not particularly good at anything. Now I know I was wrong. I am really good at solving problems. My friends often ask me to help them solve a problem. I am good at seeing a situation from different angles and having empathy with the people involved in the situation.
