2 Gun Trader s Guide INTRODUCTION As a gun pro, you may work on or work with a wide variety of firearms. The need to positively identify these firearms is essential to practically all aspects of a gun pro s work. As a gunsmith, you must know the firearm s exact make, model, and any variations so you can order the correct parts for the firearm. As a firearms appraiser, you may be called upon to identify and calculate the value of a gun for an owner s records or for an insurance claim. As a dealer, you may have to determine a fair price to pay for a firearm or you may have a customer who just wants to know more about his or her firearm. The following activities will help you learn how to locate sources of information and perform business research that will improve your probability of becoming a successful gun pro. SUGGESTED EXERCISES We ve developed a series of hands-on activities that you can do on your own. These activities aren t required for graduation, but they ll increase and enhance your knowledge of firearms and the firearms industry in your area. 1

3 Activity 1: Manufacturer s Catalogs Just about every manufacturer has a catalog or sales brochure that promotes, describes, and gives specifications for their products. In most cases, this information is available free for the asking. Write to firearms manufacturers for their latest catalogs. You can find the names and addresses of most major manufacturers in advertisements in most gun magazines. When you receive your catalogs, study them. They re valuable sources of information that will add to your knowledge and reputation as a gun pro. You may be called upon to help customers make buying decisions based on your knowledge of product availability and features. Firearms Manufacturers Make a list of the firearms manufacturers to contact for a catalog. Research the major models. Look for variations of these major models. Then check the specifications and features of each make and model. Use the following checklist of major firearms manufacturers as a guide. Remington Winchester (U.S. Repeating Arms Co.) 5 Ammunition Manufacturers Obtain catalogs from ammunition manufacturers such as Remington Winchester Federal Norma Fiocchi Cor-Bon Black Hills PMC Speer Weatherby Question: What calibers are available from each manufacturer? Question: What bullet weights are available for each caliber? Question: What types of specialty loads are available? Question: Is ballistic data shown? 6 Activity 2: Periodicals As a gun pro, you need to keep current on the latest in firearms development, equipment, and trends in the industry. A good source of current information is one or more of the latest gun magazines. Your local newsstand or the magazine rack of your local supermarket should have an ample variety of gun-related magazines. Make a list of all the monthly firearms and shooting sports magazines that you find. Also, review all the magazines you can locate. Question: Which are general information magazines? Question: Which are specialty magazines? Question: How many devoted to handguns and handgunning did you find? How many devoted to rifles or shotguns? Question: How many devoted to police or combat handgunning? Question: Did you find announcements of new products or new variations? Question: Did you find new product tests and evaluations? 7 Question: Were new shooting techniques discussed? Question: Were there articles concerning the latest gunsmith tricks or trends for competition shooters? Activity 3: Gunshops A visit to your local gunshops is important to your education as a gun pro. You should locate, visit, and study every one in your area. This means every one within a 25-mile radius. If there s a large metropolitan area within two hours of your location, you should make an effort to visit all the principal shops there also. Gunshops are important sources of information. You probably know many of the shops in your area already. Check the Yellow Pages of your phone book for others. Your friends who hunt or shoot may know of still others that the Yellow Pages don t list. Make a list of all the shops that you find, both large and small. Research is one of the reasons for visiting these shops. When you open your shop, these shops will be your competition. Visit all of them. Study in detail their business operation and take notes. Question: What do the shops specialize in? Are they strictly for the hunter? Do they specialize in a particular shooting activity or sport? Question: What s their inventory like? 8 Question: What services do they offer? Scope mounting? Blueing? Some repair work? Extensive gunsmithing services? Question: Are the salespeople friendly and helpful? Are they knowledgeable? Question: What s the layout of the stores like? Question: Are they neat and well thought out? Question: Are they bright and cheerful or do they look dark and dingy? Question: Do they look successful? Question: Do the stores layout and appearance make you want to do business in them? Question: Has all of the merchandise been labeled and priced? Question: What do you like about the shops?
