Upton Meadows Primary School Creating superstars of the future

Welcome to Upton Meadows Primary School Foreword: Sue Gardner Headteacher, says It is with pride that I welcome you to our wonderful school. Learning opportunities In our school, children are introduced to exciting and enriching learning opportunities that not only prepare them for the next stage of education, but for the rest of their lives. Dedication We do this through our highly skilled and dedicated teaching and support staff, who use a very creative curriculum and, who all have high aspirations for our pupils. We want to ignite an interest in learning and help children to realise their potential! Every child is an individual We recognise that every child is an individual, and as such treat every child with care and respect. 2

Parent partnership Another very important part of our school is you, the parent! The school welcomes the active support of parents, to complement the work of the staff, by assisting the school with activities.we want to work together to create a caring, cooperative and welcoming community where everyone is valued, challenged and supported in learning and all decision-making has the interest of pupils at its centre. Get in touch The Staff and Governors of Upton Meadows Primary School are very proud of our achievements and we welcome the opportunity to show people our school, with its amazing buildings and grounds, which encourage creativity and outdoor learning. If you would like to visit us please telephone , or simply call in to the school to make an appointment. 3

School day Friendly staff and open door makes parents feel included. School hours Foundation Morning session: 8.55am to 12.00pm. Afternoon session: 12.50pm to 3.15pm. KS1 & KS2 Morning session: 8.55am to 12.15pm. Afternoon session: 1.05pm to 3.15pm. Wraparound care Little Wiggles Pre School operates a Breakfast Club from 8am to 9am, and an After School Club from 3.25pm until 5.50pm each day. For more details on these facilities please telephone or visit 4 Uniform We feel that a simple uniform is helpful in establishing good standards of appearance in school, and by wearing it children quickly feel part of the community. Children throughout the school wear a navy polo shirt and jade green sweatshirt, both of which bear the school logo and details can be obtained from the school office. We also ask that children wear black, sensible shoes. Trainers are not suitable for health and safety reasons. Uniform items are available to order on-line and there is a link on the school website.

School meals and snacks A nutritionally balanced lunchtime meal is available for pupils via Nourish Northamptonshire, and the menu changes every three weeks. All school meals (including free school meals for Reception, Year 1 and 2 and pupil premium children) must be booked on line. To make a booking or to receive more information please or call For children who are not entitled to free schools meals, the cost is 2.25 per day and this includes a main meal, bread, pudding and fresh drinking water. Packed lunch Children are also welcome to bring in a healthy packed lunch. Break-time and drinks Under the Fruit in School scheme, KS1 children are entitled to a piece of fruit each day free of charge. This is given as a playtime snack. Water is always available during the day. Water bottles are available to purchase from the school office. Milk is free to pupil premium children and pupils under the age of 5. Other children can pay if they would like to have milk. 5

Curriculum The school has some great teachers and tries to include parents in as many school activities as possible. The curriculum is divided into three stages Early Years Foundation Stage: from ages 0-5 Key Stage 1: from ages 5-7 Key Stage 2: from ages 7-11 Reception The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is based on seven areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language Physical Development Literacy Mathematics Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design 6 Key Stages 1-2 Areas of the curriculum are: Mathematics Literacy Science Computing History Geography Art Music Physical Education Religious Education Personal, social and health education Citizenship. (PSHE) Our pupils make excellent progress in all academic subjects

Sport As well as following the Physical Education programme of work as set out in the National Curriculum, there are many opportunities for your children to enjoy extracurricular sport and team games. Moving on to secondary school When our pupils move to Secondary School we make the process as smooth as possible. We have strong links with local Secondary Schools and reciprocal visits are arranged. 7

Extended curriculum: creative learning experiences Trips and visits To extend the curriculum, and make learning even more fun, we offer many trips and activities. Recent educational trips have included: Residential visit to Grendon Trip to Stanwick Lakes Bowling trip Harry Potter trip Residential visit to Kingswood Cadbury s World trip Sealife Centre West Lodge Rural Centre Events The school also supports national events for charities such as Red Nose Day and invites visitors with special skills into school. Examples includes a puppetry workshop for the reception class, performing at Derngate Dance Festival, a Mother s Day afternoon tea and a Dad s Doodle Day breakfast. 8

Behaviour and Self-Development The school has a good balance between hard work & fun. High standards At Upton Meadows Primary School we expect high standards of behaviour from our children at all times including going to and from school. We promote responsible behaviour and self-discipline, and encourage children to develop respect for themselves, for other people and for property. This is encouraged through a range of incentives and rewards. When problems occur we deal with them in a caring, sympathetic and positive manner. School rules are based upon the rights of every child: Every child has the right to: Enjoy their learning Feel safe Be respected 9

Inclusion: a curriculum for all I feel that the school does its best to cater for each child s individual needs. Opportunities At Upton Meadows we believe that every child must be provided with opportunities to develop socially, emotionally, academically and physically to achieve the highest possible standards. We are an inclusive learning community that is forward thinking and committed to ensuring that all children in our care are happy, enthusiastic and purposeful learners. Special needs The identification and learning support programs for children with special needs are the responsibility of the class teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO). The children are fully integrated into school life, receiving expertise and assistance from various outside agencies that work with the school. Access Children with a physical disability are fully supported in accessing all parts of the school. 10 Gifted and talented children We recognise that all children are individuals with their own specific needs, gifts and talents. Gifted and talented children have special needs and we endeavour to provide opportunities for them. Collective worship Collective worship, known as assembly occurs on most days, with topics based on religious and moral themes. Parents have the right to request that their child is partly or wholly excused from assemblies and RE lessons. In this instance parents are asked to contact the Headteacher personally if such a request is to be made.

Superstars The friendly feel of the school, some great teachers and great activities like this that let parents get involved in the school day. Achievements During the school s celebration assembly, children are encouraged to display their achievements in and out of school. Each class will award a Star of the Week and Work of the Week certificate, which will be awarded in the assembly. We notify parents of these achievements and invite them to join the school as the certificates are awarded. Children are commended for their values are displayed on our stars value board. Superstars Success in all we do Unique in all we do Positive in all we do Excellence in all we do Responsible in all we do 11 Sensitive in all we do Tolerant in all we do Achieving in all we do Respectful in all we do Supported in all we do

Clubs I like the way the school makes itself part of the community and also the fact that it organises time like this to spend quality time with our children in a fun environment. At Upton Meadows we provide wide variety of lunchtime and afterschool clubs for children to enjoy. Recent clubs have included: Freestyle soccer Hotshots basketball Gymnastics Booster Clubs Theatre Group Film Club Chess Club Homework Club Board games Cookery Parent and child art 12

Communicating with parents The school provides good communication, newsletters and text messages. Your child s achievements We let you know how your child is progressing at regular intervals and invite you into school each term to talk with the Teachers. Parents are also always welcome to speak to the school at any time if they have any concerns. We recently introduced a new on-line booking system for parents evenings, which is very successful. Parents are invited to come along to coffee mornings where they can meet the staff. School News Parents are updated via school website, parent mail, text and monthly newsletters. Reading morning Every Thursday the school invites parents to come to a weekly reading morning where they can come and share a book with their child. The children really enjoy the opportunity to share with their parents and it is a great opportunity to see the school in action. 13

Admissions It is an open and relaxed atmosphere, parents always made to feel welcome. It is recommended that parents who are thinking of applying for a place at our school attend one of the school s open days. For more information on these please contact the school office. Starting school Children start at Upton Meadows Primary School in the Autumn term of the academic year in which they will have their fifth birthday. Applications School: Northampton Council deals with all new admissions to Upton Meadows Primary School and all applications are dealt with on-line. When we receive confirmation that a place has been offered we will arrange a meeting with the parent and pupil and agree the arrangements for admission. Contact details for the School Admissions Team: Tel : Web: 14

Getting involved They offer events that help parents to bond rather than just the children getting along. Friends of Upton Meadows Friends of Upton Meadows (FUMPS) is the name of the school s PTA, and the group is always welcomes new members. The PTA has some exciting projects lined up to help raise funds that will benefit the school and it s a great way for parents and carers to get involved and have fun! Do you want to join the FUMPS? If you are interested in becoming involved and can spare some time to help out at school events please contact the school office to express an interest. We very much look forward to welcoming you. Voluntary helpers At Upton Meadows we always welcome volunteers into school. If parents have any hidden talents that they would like to share we would love to hear from you. Help with Reading At the heart of our curriculum is reading for pleasure. Teachers at Upton Meadows make sure that the highest quality books are read by and to children, across the curriculum. But we can t do this alone! We need Parents to work in partnership with us to make sure that children are reading for pleasure regularly at home. 15 Governorship Our school Governors manage the school with the Headteacher. The Governing Body is made up of elected Parents, members appointed by the Local Education Authority (LEA), co-opted Governors, Teacher representatives and the Headteacher. Members are elected for period of four years. For more information visit the school website and have a look at the Governors section. Do you want to be a Governor? From time to time a vacancy arises on the Governing Body for a new parent governor, who will be elected by ballot. If you have a question for any of the governors or would like more information about becoming a school governor please the clerk on
