1 This module is a core part of the MSc Commercial Practice for the Energy Sectors. The module may be taken as a stand alone study package. Keywords Competition, competitive forces analysis, market testing, value creation, PPCA Aim of Module To facilitate a critical undertsanding of tools and techniques appropriate to commercial value creation. Learning Outcomes for Module On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: 1. Critically evaluate the requirements for value creation in the energy sectors. 2. Propose and develop the business case for market testing within a commercial environment. 3. Analyse and apply commercial value creation techniques within the energy sectors Indicative Module Content Pre contract process; the importance of competition; market testing / understanding contractor landscape; developing the business case for market testing; client and contractor alignment techniques; pre qualifying & selecting suppliers for market testing (including available technology & industry data bases); competitive forces analysis; power positioning analysis; supplier positioning analysis; performance alignment techniques; managing the bidding & market test process; purchase price cost analysis methodologies; whole life value assessment, industry based, real world case studies and scenarios. Assessement The module is assessed by a combination of participation in activities/tests and an integrative piece of coursework. Online participation, both independent and collaborative, will account for 40% of the grade. An integrative, independent assignment will account for 60% of the grade. Indicative Bibliography 1. 4 Grading Module Grade A B C D E F NS Description of Requirement for Grade Demonstrates a consistently thorough grasp of the subject matter by identifying, defining and assessing all of the issues relevant to the coursework question. Demonstrates a very high ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate the relationships between the different elements and their consequences. Structure and clarity of expression are excellent with consistent and accurate grammar and spelling and a fluent academic writing style. All inputs are supported with relevant and consistently accurate referencing where appropriate. Demonstrates a thorough grasp of the subject matter by identifying, defining and assessing almost all of the issues relevant to the Coursework question. Demonstrates a high ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate the relationships between the different elements and their consequences. Thoughts and ideas are clearly expressed and structured with accurate grammar and spelling. Where appropriate, referenc ing is mostly relevant, mostly accurate and of the expected quantity. Demonstrates a good grasp of the subject matter by identifying, defining and assessing most of the issues relevant to the Coursework question. Demonstrates competence in analysis, synthesis and evaluation of the relationships between the different elements and their consequences. There is some reduction in the clarity of the communication of thoughts and ideas. There is a clear structure, gram mar and spelling are mainly accurate and language is mainly fluent. Where appropriate, referencing is mostly relevant but contains minor inconsistencies and inaccuracies and a shortfall in number. Demonstrates a satisfactory grasp of the subject matter and a satisfactory level of relevance to the issues involved in the Coursework question. Demonstrates adequate ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate but may contain some confused/vague ideas. Meaning is apparent in most instances, but structure is inconsistent and there are significant grammar/spelling errors. Where appropriate referenc ing is present and partially relevant but contains inconsistencies, inaccuracies and a shortfall in number. Demonstrates a marginally unsatisfactory grasp of the subject matter and a marginally unsatisfactory level of relevance to the issues involved in the CW question. Demonstrates some ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate but there are significant confused/vague ideas. Frequent ambiguity and poor structure lead to difficulty in discerning the meaning. Language, grammar and spelling are poor. Where appropriate, referencing is very limited and includes some inconsistencies and inaccuracies. IIn essays demonstrates an unsatisfactory grasp, confusion and lack of understanding of the subject matter and a low level of reference to the issues involved in the CW question. Occasional evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation is present but ambiguity and lack of structure result in the meaning being unclear. Language, grammar and spelling are poor. Referencing is inaccurate or absent. Also/or fails to participate satisfactorily in three out of the four specified coursework activities. Non-submission of work by published deadline. Module assessment will be recorded in two components. Component 1 will typically be a combination of group activities and will be weighted at 40% of the final grade. 5 To successfully pass the module a student requires an overall grade of 3 (=D) or better for the module. A No-Submission (NS) in any component will result in a final grade of NS for the Module.
