2 Welcome to Spain, a country of contrasts, a mixture of languages and cultures, of tradition and modernity. Bilbao is the largest business and cultural city in Northern Spain. After its booming industrial development in the past, Bilbao has undergone a spectacular face-lifting process. The Guggenheim-Bilbao Museum has greatly contributed to the relaunching of the city as a cultural center. The modern subway designed by Norman Foster, a new environment-friendly streetcar service, the Convention and Music Hall Center, and all the avenues and parks make life in the city easier and more attractive. The University of Deusto is located opposite the Guggenheim Museum. The two buildings look at each other face to face, making the bond between tradition and progress a reality. Since its foundation in 1886, the University of Deusto has been a pioneer in the academic scenario in Spain, always trying to give an answer to the professional and human demands of its students. Since this University has always granted fundamental importance to its international projection, it currently leads numerous international academic projects which host an increasing number of students every year. Centro Internacional de Español-CIDE The CIDE Programs and Courses provide quality education, flagship of the University of Deusto. They are intensive international Programs or Courses in which students are fully immersed into the Spanish language and culture and interact with other Spanish students. CIDE is also an official venue for official exams in order to obtain the Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), issued by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry for Education. Through CIDE, international students are granted access to a variety of disciplines that range from humanities to business. As an added value, the Center also offers the chance to learn about the Basque culture, and to gain a better understanding of the Spanish diversity in the European context. Upon completion of the Program or Course, you will receive an Official Academic Transcript from the University of Deusto. CIDE will aid you in handling the transfer of credits to your Home University.

3 Spanish Language and Culture Program Dates: June 27-July 28, Students choose 2-3 courses among the following: Spanish Language (all levels) Culture and Politics in Contemporary Spain Spain in Europe* 20th Century Spanish Literature** Introduction to Hispanic Literature** Advanced Spanish Grammar, Composition and Translation** Latin American Literature** Business, International Relations and Spanish Language Program Dates: June 27-July 28, Students choose 2-3 courses among the following: International Business (in English) Spain s Society and Economy in the European Union (in English) 6 ECTS Spanish for Business and International Relations* Spanish Language (all levels) 6 ECTS The academic program is complemented by three guided visits to companies or institutions. Some of the companies and institutions visited in previous Summer Programs include Mondragon Cooperative Society, Biscay Technology Park, Marques del Riscal Wineries, Bilbao Stock Market, and Basque Automotive Industry Cluster. *** The student must have an intermediate level of Spanish. *** The student must have an intermediate-advanced level of Spanish. Guided Excursions included in both Programs All day tours include explanations by instructors and tourist guides, travel expenses, admission tickets, and lunch: Three-day Tour: Madrid and Segovia/Toledo. City of Bilbao Day Tour: Main city landmarks + Guggenheim Museum. Fishermen s Wharf and Beaches. Historical Renowned Sites Day Tour: Gernika and Mundaka. Pamplona (the Running of the Bulls) and San Sebastian Day Tour. Other services included (family stay or student residence hall, and three daily meals). Airport pick-up in Madrid (on arrival date and times established by the Program). Academic and personal advising. Office of Student Assistance. Use of study rooms, libraries, computer rooms, and free access to Internet and WiFi. 4 Intensive Spanish Language Course Dates: July 4-28, Credits: 6 ECTS (15 hours/week) Course characteristics: Small groups, organized by levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 3-hour-per-day course in which both written and oral competences will be developed. Language Placement test: June 30. Other services included: Assistance for housing reservations. Certificate. University of Deusto Card and access to the University of Deusto facilities. Course in Spanish Language and Culture for Teachers Dates: July 11-29, Credits: 6 ECTS (20 hours/week) Addressees: The course is aimed at teachers of Spanish as a foreign language interested in improving their teaching resources and materials, as well as enhancing their own Spanish language skills. The course includes the following modules: Topics in Spanish Language and their Teaching (30 hours) Multicultural Spain (15 hours) Practical Workshop in Spanish (15 hours) Guided Visits: Bilbao: Old Quarter and Ensanche. San Millan de la Cogolla (La Rioja), birthplace of the Spanish language, located in a region of renown wines. Food tasting tour: pinchos. Guggenheim Museum. Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao. Tour along the Way of St. James in Bilbao. Visit to a local school. Other services included: (residence hall). Welcome reception and orientation.. Certificate.
