1 Birding Eastern Turkey Trip Report - May 2013

2 BIRDING EASTERN TURKEY 6th-17th May 2013 M.P. Frost (trip compilation), R.A. Frost, R.M. Frost (driver), L.E. Frost, S. Abbott (species compilation). As most of the preparation for this venture was done in the latter half of 2012, and as border tensions between Turkey and Syria became perilous on a couple of occasions, we resolved that our route would start from Antalya, so pre-booked our Heathrow flight early with Easyjet. This meant we could deviate to other destinations and re-plan if necessary. If hostilities had commenced further we had decided that with caution the furthest eastern city to travel to would be Gaziantep. (On reflection and due to the following travel experience I recommend that you fly to Adana or other eastern airports via Istanbul). At first travelling along the D400 towards Tasucu was satisfactory apart from the Turkish custom of erratic lane crossing due to impatience. However, as the road hugged the coast it meandered and became tedious due to many slow moving lorries ascending with no overtaking lanes. Added to this was a line painting session with the hazard of marker cones left in place by the road team, being scattered by the juggernauts. The one salvation was lunch at a small restaurant as sole occupants in a shaded patio with an envious seascape and an excellent kebab (see pic). Yellowlegged and a single Audouin s gull passed offshore whilst a Hoopoe entertained and several Yellow-vented bulbuls called. We arrived at Tasucu early evening and due to an ill-conceived map (from Booking.com) took some time to find our hotel next to the Goksu delta for two nights. One driver kindly escorted us to our destination, inroducing us to Turkish hospitality. I can only echo the positive remarks that other trip reports have waxed about the charm of Turkey and its people. As written, it is true that if you learn a few essential Turkish phrases, Turkish people will happily interact. Communication tip: Download the free GOOGLE Translator app for smart phones - Select Turkey from the many other languages available - key in the English phrase and as well as the Turkish translation it also gives you the option to use audio pronunciation! References: There are plenty of on-line Trip Reports to source information. Naturally the most recent will be the most revealing. This report is intended as an update to benefit any interested birders planning a future trip. I referenced the following online 2012 reports for May-June which I found particularly informative:- Southern Turkey, May di Igor Festari, Italia (very informative - CIAO! Italian birders). Ornitholidays Tour to Turkey 30 April -09 May 2012 Birding at the edge of the Western Palearctic - Christoph Moning & Gerlinde Taurer (explicit maps) Some of our most memorable experiences were as follows: 1. Watching Green turtles surface in Tasucu harbour. 2. Hospitality of Basar Safak at Safak pansiyon - Cukurbag, with the 04.30am tractor ride to Arpalik plateau (2,400m) for Snowcock and other montane species - NOT TO BE MISSED. 3. The visible migration of Rose-coloured starlings in several flocks totalling a thousand + birds. 4. Finding Pallid scops owl O.brucei in the tea gardens perched in full view in daylight (thanks to scolding starlings). 5. Seeing our top target species - Pied and White-throated kingfishers and Blue-cheeked bee-eater. Route planning: We used the MICHELIN map of Turkey 758 for previous planning and general routes but when travelling relied on a Sat Nav which is essential. As the rental price for a sat nav from Hertz car rental was the same expense as buying a new Garmin sat nav we purchased our own but do

3 ensure that the full european maps (or Turkey) are updated as we encountered much diversion and confusion entering the city of Gaziantep. Car Hire was from Hertz who allocated us a Renault Fluence model with just enough room for 5 people with luggage and equipment. As Turkey is a huge country the toll roads OTOYOLS are built for speed, well maintained and excellent to drive on especially for overtaking groups of lorries. Rest areas (Park Alani) and refreshment stops were available. Toll road permits. A new style permit (introduced in January 2013) HGS windscreen sticker is available from any PPT (Post Office) or some petrol stations. A minimum credit of 30 Turkish lira is required. Part of this sticker is affixed to your windscreen, behind and just below the driver s rear view mirror, for the scanner to accept the credit as you pass through the correct lane on entry and exit. The other half is placed in the vehicle registration book for re-charging. Worth enquiring if the car rental firm provides this - Hertz did not. We travelled a total of 3,372km = miles and all are grateful to R. M. Frost who drove with care and patience. Below is a brief itinerary of each day, with a shortlist of species seen. We saw all on our target list (*) except for Pale Rock sparrow and See-see partridge. This was due to lack of time and cooler showery weather in our second week.
