5 History of Goodwill Goodwill was established in 1902 by the Rev. Edgar J. Helms in Boston, Massachusetts. The Rev. Helms did missionary work in the slums of Boston in the early 1900s. People came to his church seeking help with food and clothing. The Rev. Helms used burlap sacks to collect clothing and household goods from the wealthiest districts in Boston. He hired the poor and needy to mend and repair the used goods he collected. The refurbished items were resold; the people were given meaningful work and were paid from the sale of the donated goods. Rev. Edgar J. Helms including one outlet store, more than 0 donation sites and 2 Goodwill Career Solutions offices. Eighty-nine percent of our employees were hired in connection with our mission, and we are one of Tennessee s largest employers of people with disabilities. Our free services are available to anyone needing assistance finding a job. We are affiliated with Goodwill Industries International in Rockville, Md., and operate independently with our own governing board of directors. 6 Description of Services Goodwill Career Solutions Goodwill serves people who face obstacles in finding and keeping work. These obstacles include but are not limited to: Homelessness Criminal Background Former Drug User Chronic Unemployment Dislocated Worker Advanced Age Teen Parent School Dropout We have 2 career solutions centers in middle and west Tennessee. We offer free one-on-one job training and placement services for people who need help looking for, finding and keeping a job. Our career counselors work with our clients to assist with their job search, resume and interviewing skills. Our clients have access to job leads, job readiness classes and other programs, most of which are free. 7 Transitional Employment Services Transitional employment services assist people with documented medical, developmental and/or emotional disabilities to transition into the world of work. Individuals participate in intensive job readiness services to learn skills needed to enter into employment at Goodwill or with an outside employer. Youth Programs Goodwill Career Solutions offers several employment and training programs for including the Summer Work Program, Summer Job Readiness and Summer Integration. Youth Building Goodwill is a year-round program for out-of-school young adults ages 1-25 who need additional education, vocational training and assistance in preparing for living independently and working in the community. Goodwill Cares Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. established a program to assist individuals and families who have experienced a recent hardship; such as, layoffs, homelessness, domestic violence, house fires, natural disasters or foster care situations. We provide Goodwill gift cards to those in need of clothing, furniture and/or household items. Each individual requesting assistance through Goodwill Cares must provide a letter of referral from a supporting agency. In 2015, we issued more than 900 gift cards to people in need. Wheels-to-Work Transportation to work is a major barrier to employment for many people. The Wheels-to-Work Program was established to help Goodwill employees or clients with a transportation barrier. The program gives donated vehicles to qualified Goodwill clients or employees who need them to get to work and cannot afford to buy a car. We have given away nine vehicles through the program since its inception in
8 Volunteer Information We have established some policies and procedures to help you have a good volunteer experience. We want all of our employees, clients and volunteers to represent Goodwill in a positive light. We ask that you adhere to the following policies and procedures while on duty as a volunteer. VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS We ask that our volunteers: Be at least 1 years of age, unless you are volunteering with an approved school or youth group. Be sincere in your offer of service. Be willing to learn Be willing to participate in orientation and training. Maintain a smooth working relationship with staff. Stay within the bounds of volunteer responsibility. Accept the guidance and leadership of Goodwill management. Carry out assigned duties and responsibilities. VOLUNTEER IDENTIFICATION All volunteers must wear their Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., volunteer badge when working their volunteer shift. These badges are used to give you access to your assigned area and ensure only authorized individuals are entering our buildings. You will not be permitted to volunteer without wearing your volunteer badge. The badge must be visible to security and staff at all times. Lost or damaged badges must immediately be reported to the community relations manager or area supervisor. Badges must be returned to the community relations manager or area supervisor during any extended leave or upon termination of the volunteer relationship. DRESS CODE Volunteers must wear clothing that is neat, clean and suitable for the area that you are assigned. Short shorts, halter-tops, cut-off shirts, overly revealing clothing and any clothing with inappropriate language are not acceptable attire. Special requirements are listed below by area. Warehouse No open-toe shoes, no open heeled shoes, no sandals Retail Store No sandals or blue jeans Special Events Appropriate attire for event VOLUNTEER SHIFTS Volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their shift start time. This will give you time to make contact with the supervisor/leader in your area, receive instructions for your volunteer assignment and gather any necessary supplies. Volunteer shifts are a minimum of two hours. 6
9 PERSONAL PHONE USE Volunteers must refrain from using Goodwill phones for personal use. We also request that all volunteers put their electronic devices including cell phones on silent or turn them off while volunteering. COMPENSATION AND TIPS Volunteers are not allowed to accept compensation in any form from donors, employees or clients. This includes, but is not limited to: monetary gifts, gift cards, gift baskets or tips. Any gifts received must be turned in to Goodwill and will be considered a donation to Goodwill. SOLICITATION POLICY Volunteers are prohibited from soliciting any products, goods or services to Goodwill clients, employees, donors and guests. This also includes distributing marketing materials, sales brochures or flyers for goods, products, services or events. RELATIONSHIPS Volunteers are prohibited from making personal loans to or borrowing money from Goodwill clients, employees or customers. The relationship between Goodwill volunteers and staff is expected to remain professional at all times. HARASSMENT AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT Goodwill is committed to an environment free of harassment. Goodwill prohibits any verbal, physical or visual harassment of any employee, client or volunteer. Sexual Harassment is also a violation of Goodwill s policy. Goodwill is dedicated to providing an environment that is free from unsolicited and unwelcomed sexual advances. WEAPON-FREE WORKPLACE Goodwill prohibits all persons who enter onto Goodwill property from carrying a prohibited weapon regardless of whether the person is licensed to carry the prohibited weapon. Prohibited weapons include, but are not limited to, handguns, firearms; explosive devices, knives, stun guns, or any other weapons restricted or outlawed under federal, state, or local law or that could cause bodily harm. The possession of weapons on Goodwill property is cause for dissolution of your volunteer relationship with Goodwill. VIOLENCE Violent acts or threats of violence made by a Goodwill client, employee or volunteer are prohibited. Such statements or actions including written or implied are grounds for dismissal as a volunteer. If you receive any threats while volunteering or are made aware of any threats against someone else please make a member of Goodwill management aware as soon as possible. SAFETY Goodwill is committed to maintaining a safe work environment. There is exposure to dust, exhaust and heavy machinery in some volunteer environments. We ask that you wear all issued protective gear. Only operate equipment that you are certified to operate. Report any safety issues to management immediately. Try to keep your work area dry, clean and free of debris. SMOKING Smoking is prohibited at all Goodwill locations other than in designated smoking areas.
10 DRUG- AND ALCOHOL-FREE ENVIRONMENT Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., is committed to providing a safe environment. It is a violation of Goodwill policy for clients, employees or volunteers to use, possess, sell, trade, offer for sale or offer to buy illegal drugs or otherwise engage in the use of illegal drugs on or off Goodwill s property. It is also a violation for you to possess or use alcohol on Goodwill property or to volunteer under the influence of or be impaired by illegal drugs or alcohol. THEFT Removal of any item or items that include but are not limited to: donations, office supplies, furniture or other equipment from the premises of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., without the consent of management is considered theft. All donations and even items deemed as trash are the property of Goodwill. Anyone who witnesses or has knowledge of theft should report that activity to Goodwill management immediately. Theft is grounds for permanent dissolution of the volunteer relationship with Goodwill. PERSONAL ITEMS Goodwill cannot assume any responsibility for personal property. To avoid confusion of ownership or possible theft, all personal items must be locked in your vehicle or left at home. Personal items are prohibited in the warehouse, donation express centers and retail stores. VOLUNTEERING WITH PEOPLE WITH BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT Goodwill works with people with various disabilities and other barriers to employment. Some barriers are visible, some are not. Disabilities affect people in different ways. Employees and staff are expected to be respectful of others. Goodwill strives to train people who participate in its programs to be good and successful employees. Each Goodwill employee is required to be a positive role model for others in all aspects of employment. PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECORDING To ensure we provide a comfortable environment, volunteers are prohibited from taking pictures, video or recording conversations of clients, staff, employees or other volunteers unless approved in advance by management. Goodwill volunteers should be mindful to use electronic media, even on their own personal time, responsibly and respectfully to others. SHOPPING Holding merchandise for the purpose of placing it aside for a volunteer, employee, family member or friend to buy later is prohibited. All merchandise must be purchased from a retail store or from onlinegoodwill.com. Volunteers may only purchase merchandise from a retail store location before or after their scheduled shift and during regular business hours. All purchases from a retail store must be removed immediately after the purchase.
11 Volunteer Agreement I,, state that I have read, understand and agree to abide by all of the policies and procedures outlined in the volunteer training and handbook issued by Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. As a volunteer for Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., I agree to: 1. Participate in volunteer training sessions. 2. Be on time and work the entire assigned volunteer shift that I committed to and as outlined by Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. 3. Notify the Community Relations Manager or area supervisor by telephone if I am unable to fulfill my volunteer commitment. 4. Fulfill all commitments as indicated in the job description for my volunteer position. 5. Perform all assigned tasks with a high standard of professionalism, customer service, excellent conduct and accountability. 6. Comply with all Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., Volunteer Policies and Procedures.. Honor all confidential information.. Abide by the Ethical Code of Conduct for Volunteers.
