6 Tysfjord, the fjord of Hellemo and Rago Location: Fjord-, forest- and mountain-area in Nordland County. Total area: about 1200 km 2 Justification: the are will fulfil the idea of Laponia as a transboundary site, stretching from the Bothnian side over to the Atlantic side of the Scandinavian peninsula. representing: - exceptional example of Lule Sami settlement and cultural landscape - an exceptional cross-section of Quaternary geological processes on the Scandinavian peninsula Status: adequate protective measures are not in place in parts of the area. Currently the work on culture and nature protection awaits the conclusions from a assessment of the rights to use and manage natural recourses in areas with Sami reindeer-herding. 11 LOFOTEN Significant cultural and natural elements and features with potential OUV: - a cultural landscape representing a unique continuing traditional interaction between man and nature over the last 1000 years (or more) - a cultural tradition of the making and export of stockfish as one of the first foodstuffs to be object of international trade (from the animal kingdom) - superlative natural phenomena (bird cliffs, tidal currents) and areas of exceptional natural beauty - unique coastal and marine ecosystem (high production) - unique bird diversity north of the Arctic Circle (282 species) - the seabird capital of mainland Europe -the most important spawning area for Atlantic cod (Gadus Morhua) on the Northern Hemisphere -Worlds largest cold water coral reef Status - a complete nomination dossier is to be drafted within November Directorate for Nature Management (Nov. 2007)
