Autumn Term Training Days 1 st and 2 nd September (school closed for pupils) Dear Parents, It s been a tremendous year of change and progress at Mandeville. The pupils moved into the new ASC department in June, they have settled very well and really like their new classes. People have commented on the sense of space, light and colour and how much cooler the building is. We are also very pleased with the new specialist rooms such as the light and sound hall and sensory room. These resources are available for all children to use. The major building works this term has been to increase the size of the accessible changing room in the swimming pool so that more of our children who are wheelchair users can access swimming. Also the playgrounds are being redeveloped to provide a balance of landscaping and adventure play equipment. The old ASC corridor is being converted into three larger classes for pupils with physical disabilities. This will give us the much needed space for all the specialist resources and equipment. I must admit I m looking forward to September when all the building works will be completed. A huge thank you to Osborne who have managed the build around our specialist requirements and have supported school to fund raise by donating many of the prizes for the Summer Fun Day. We said goodbye to our leavers this morning, always a time of mixed emotions. I am so proud of their achievements and what lovely characters they have grown into. Mandeville s door is always open for a visit for them and their parents, who we will miss very much. Jackie very much enjoyed her first visit as Governor to Mandeville and was particularly impressed by the positive attitude of staff and children.

2 Extended Schools and Family Learning Satpreet Mitchell Home School Liaison Teacher We know the summer term can be quite busy, but we are pleased some of you were able to attend our meetings and workshops. Here s some information on what we offered: Title of Meeting Hearing Impairment Visual Impairment Moving onto Secondary School (Transition) Volunteering at Mandeville Date and who led the Meeting Thursday 7th May 10am to 12pm Andrew Matthews (Teacher/Consultant for Hearing Impairment) Lisa Rhys- Davies (Teacher/Consultant for Visual Impairment) Mundrika, Lesley Beck and Satpreet Catherine Fennell Comments from parents and carers who attended I got help to learn about hearing aids. I d like more sessions like this. It helped me very much. It was useful to find out how CVI affects my child. I have learnt about more play ideas It gave me a good insight into the common sight problems that are faced and what can be done to help improve the situation It is very worrying moving on from Mandeville but it was good to meet other parents in the same situation Very interesting. I hope I will be able to do it as I would like to work with Special needs children, I have lots of experience! Well another year is over for Come and Play and what a fun time we have had! This year we were able to have more outside entertainment from Singing Hands, Moroccan music and drumming, Zumba and lots more! Come and Play will be open again from February next year for another 20 weeks. We hope to involve parents/carers more in the planning of the project so if you are interested, look out for the meeting in October. 3 Friends of Mandeville Here comes Spider Man! Gabriel loved his day out at Butlins. Butlins Seaside Trip Over 100 people joined us on our annual trip to the seaside on Saturday May 23 rd. The weather was kind to us, no rain until we left which was great. Feedback from families has been very positive so we will definitely offer this trip again next May. The Fun Day was another great success. We raised nearly 1000 for the school so a huge Thank you to all who helped on the day or with the preparation beforehand. Satpreet Mitchell Chair of Friends of Mandeville Staff News Parents tell us they like to hear of staff news so here s this term s... Retirement Tea Party We held a retirement Tea Party for two long standing staff members last week. Anne Lassiter has taught at Mandeville for 17 years. She has worked across school and in more recent years in the ASC department. We wish her a very happy retirement and thank her for all the years of teaching and commitment to Mandeville. Delia Fry has worked as a School Meals Supervisor at Mandeville for nearly 25 years. I am pleased to announce that she will join us again in September for a few weeks so that she can be awarded her 25 years long service award. This is a well-deserved award and recognises the time and commitment Delia has given to Mandeville. Following recent recruitment, we have in September: Michaela O Connor taking on a new role as Higher Level Teaching Assistant Jayshree Patel and Izabela Nazarowicz moving from SMSAs to Teaching Assistant Angela Davies, Angela Sandhu and Amie Murphy moving from SMSA roles to Special School Support Assistants We have Brona Smith joining our team who completed her PGCE training here at Mandeville last Autumn term

! Ricky Ifill-Cleere has won the National Doodle Day Competition - he has received the highest number of internet votes for his drawing. Well done Ricky!

Starfish Class had some lovely visitors! Living Eggs were delivered to school and pupils watched amazed as the eggs hatched and became real chicks!! Ricky Ifill-Cleere has won the National Doodle Day Competition - he has received the highest number of internet votes for his drawing. Well done Ricky! PMLD Rebound festival Four pupils from St Ann's and four pupils from Mandeville took part in a day s Rebound Therapy and sport Activities in June. This was the first time Willow Tree Sports Partnership were able to provide a fully inclusive days experience for our PMLD pupils. The day was a great success and next year we will be working alongside the partnership to run more days like this. It was great fun!! Sherborne Movement This is a way of teaching children about movement, Body Awareness and building relationships. We will be running training at level 1 in Sherborne Movement for 12 staff in September. These staff will then go on to run sessions themselves. Sports Premium This is the money we get from the Government to spend on activities that will promote an active and healthy lifestyle. This year, we just employed a Sports Apprentice who will be working closely with the PE team to provide extra input in all areas of the PE Curriculum. Aaron, the Sports Coach, has run a successful programme, Being Active with your child supporting carers and parents at Come and Play to be more active with their child. One parent said I now know how to do more with my son, I have learnt a lot! I now know who works with my son during the week.

We are very sad to see them go, but we know they will continue to do well in their new environments!
