1 Thursday, 17 December 2015 AUSTRALIA DAY AMBASSADORS PREPARE FOR AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE STATE This January, 140 of NSW s most prominent sporting personalities, cultural leaders, medical pioneers and everyday heroes will be visiting communities right across the state for Australia Day as they take on their role as the 2016 Australia Day Ambassadors. Having grown from just nine Ambassadors in 1990, the robust Australia Day Ambassador program provides an opportunity to showcase some of Australia s inspirational and influential individuals. From author Thomas Keneally to community leader Dr Jamal Rifi, each Australia Day Ambassador will spend Australia Day visiting local government areas right across the state to participate in Australia Day celebrations including BBQs, thong-throwing competitions and concerts. Australia Day Ambassador, Donny Gallea, is thrilled to be visiting Shellharbour on the South Coast and will be part of the local celebrations. I am so honoured to be an Australia Day Ambassador, it truly is my favourite day of the year to celebrate how lucky and blessed we are to live in this great country. I was born and raised in Wollongong, so would often get to visit Shellharbour. So I am really excited to be heading back to Shellharbour on Australia Day and it will be extra special to have my family and friends come join me on the day, said Donny. With this year s Australia Day theme Australia Day Everyone, Everywhere, the Australia Day Ambassadors will also be looking beyond community borders to show how Australia Day is celebrated across the world. They ll be encouraging people to go online and share their celebrations using the hashtag #AusDay. So whether it s a BBQ with friends and family, a day on Sydney Harbour or even some backyard cricket, the Australia Day Council of NSW will be able to tell the story of the many unique and special ways Australians celebrate. There is a smorgasbord of events happening this Australia Day across NSW, so be sure to visit australiaday.com.au to plan your day and don t forget to hashtag #AusDay! - ends - Images and bios can be downloaded from HighTail Media information for Australia Day 2016: Website: Facebook: facebook.com.au/australiaday26 Twitter: twitter.com.au/australiaday Instagram: instagram.com.au/australiaday26 Media Contact: Eleanor Garth, Australia Day Council of NSW T: or E: Eleanor.Garth@dpc.nsw.gov.au or australiaday@dpc.nsw.gov.au
