The Progressive Era Photography Project As the 20 th century dawned there were thousands of photographers across the United States. Some were journalists; some artists and others simply pursued photography as a hobby. Photography allows us the opportunity to see what life was like at different times throughout US History, and how things have changed compared with the life we live today. Industrialization, urbanization and immigration led to great changes in the lives of those living in the US between 1900 and The Progressive Movement was a social movement that brought about changes politically, economically and socially. Photographs allow us the opportunity to view these changes through a different lens. Over the next few days, your job will be to examine many of the photographs of this era. You will be completing a number of different tasks: Analyzing photographs to find the story behind the image Examining the wealth of photographs available Finally, creating your own exhibit of photographs that touch on at least three major themes of the Progressive Era. You will analyze photographs in order to explain what they have to tell you about the Progressive Era. You will use Keynote or PowerPoint to create your exhibit. Task # 1 Picturing Modern America This website features a number of exercises that will help you how to analyze photographs. Visit the website and select Image Detective. You can choose any picture; simply click on it to begin. You will be looking at the photograph and posing a question about what is going on in the picture. You will then gather clues, examine background information and draw a conclusion. Choose an image or two and make note of what you learn from following this process. Once you have done this a few times and feel comfortable it will be time to start preparing for your exhibit.

Websites to Explore American Memory Project, American Photographs: The First Century, Lewis W. Hine Child Labor Photographs, Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Photography and Social Reform, Photographs from the Chicago Daily News, Photographs of Urbanization in the Progressive Era, timeline/progress/cities/urban.html The Triangle Factory Fire Touring America: Photographs from the Detroit Publishing Company, Votes for Women: Suffrage Pictures, Picture This: California Perspectives on American History era s Museum of Fine Arts

Task #2 Make a detailed list of the websites you visit (must visit a minimum of 4 websites) and describe the types of images that you discovered. To complete the list; include the title of each site, the theme of each site and provide a detailed summary of the photographs that were investigated. You may look for other websites about Progressive Era Photographs. However, any site not listed on the previous page must be approved by Ms. Kyne. 1. Website #1 2. Website #2 3. Website #3 4. Website #4

Task #3 After spending some time exploring the websites, you will be choosing 5 photographs from the Progressive Era from the websites, and analyzing those photographs using the method that you have just learned. The photographs that you select must represent at least 3 of the themes of the Progressive Era listed below: Corporations and Labor: Child labor, unions, worker and consumer protection, Triangle Fire, The Jungle, etc. Urbanization and Immigration: Growth of cities, nativism, settlement houses, etc. Women s Rights: Birth control movement, suffragettes, changing role of women in society. Progressive Reformers: Politicians, muckrakers, crusaders Political changes: Votes for women, government reforms, progressive political interventions. Temperance/Prohibition: Moderation or banning of alcohol. You may also select a theme of your own choosing- - consider: conservation, social welfare, tariffs, anti- trust action, youth reform, socialism. While you are looking for your 5 photographs, keep in mind that you are looking for photographs with a story to tell. Look for photographs that raise questions in your mind regarding what is going on in the picture, who the people are, and what the image represents. You should save the links to your photographs by copying and pasting the links onto a Microsoft Word document. You may choose to find your 5 photographs and then analyze the pictures OR select and analyze photographs one at a time. Follow the steps you learned on the Picturing Modern America site: 1) Form a question about the image. 2) Gather clues about what is going on in the image. 3) Use information to analyze what is going on in the image. 4) Draw a conclusion about the image.

After you have analyzed your images, open up Keynote/PowerPoint. You will be creating a PowerPoint slide show of your images. Your slide show must have the following features: Slide 1: Title Page featuring your name and the name of your exhibit Slide 2: A summary paragraph defining the Progressive Era (in your own words). Slides 3-7: Your images Copy and past the image to the slide The analysis must be based upon following the four steps from Picturing Modern America AND must describe which theme of the Progressive Era the image is representative of. You must also put the web address of the photograph.
