1 Lino Pertile Boylston 423 Office Hours: Th or by appointment Spring Ital 140 The Human Comedy : the Italian Novella from its Origins to the Renaissance Thursday, 9-10 and Tuesday, 1-3 The tradition of the Italian novella, or short story in prose, from its inception in the anonymous Novellino to its maturity in Boccaccio s Decameron and the works of other major storytellers from Sacchetti to Bandello. Selected tales will be studied for their artistic quality, and as a mirror of the varied life of Italian society between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the tradition of the novella, the predominant form of prose fiction during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and one of the most enjoyable, innovative and influential genres of literature ever produced in Italy. The novelle will be studied in depth paying attention to both the way in which they are written (structure, language and style) and the reality they depict (different characters and types: men and women, high and low, comic and tragic, etc.; themes, such as nature, love, intelligence, power, religion, etc.; social institutions, such as Church, Authority, Schooling, Marriage, etc.). Comparisons of plotlines, themes and characters across ages and collections will be strongly encouraged. TEXTS A selection of novelle from the following texts will be provided: Libro dei sette savi Fiori e vita di filosofi ed altri savi Novellino
2 Giovanni Boccaccio, Decameron. Students are required to have their own copy. I recommend the edition by Vittore Branca, Milano, Mondadori, (Either the Meridiani Mondadori or the Oscar edition is fine). If you need an English translation, I recommend the Penguin Classics ed. (trans. G. McWilliam) or the OUP ed (trans. G. Waldman) Franco Sacchetti, Il Trecentonovelle (selection) The anonymous Novella del grasso legnaiuolo Masuccio Salernitano, Il Novellino (selection) Niccolò Machiavelli, Belfagor Luigi da Porto s and Matteo Bandello s versions of Giulietta e Romeo Matteo Bandello, Novelle (selection) 2. An adaptation of nine stories from Bocaccio's Decameron: A young Sicilian is swindled twice, but ends up rich; a man poses as a deafmute in a convent of curious nuns; a woman must hide her lover when her husband comes home early; a scoundrel fools a priest on his deathbed; three brothers take revenge on their sister's lover; a young girl sleeps on the roof to meet her boyfriend at night; a group of painters wait for inspiration; a crafty priest attempts to seduce his friend's wife; and two friends make a pact to find out what happens after death. Pasolini is up to his old tricks satirizing the Church, and throwing in liberal doses of life and love. (Philip Brubaker). We will watch together and discuss Pasolini s film just before Spring Break. Written Work 1. Short Papers (about 500 w.): concise explanations of, or commentaries on, issues/themes/characters discussed or to be discussed during the week; also, short written reports on research carried out. 2. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1968), originally published in Russian in
4 Since the mid 1960s, the theory of narrative, or narratology, has developed enormously. For a brief overview (up to 1995) see Gerald Prince, Narratology, in The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism, vol. 8, edited by Raman Selden, CUP 1995, pp biblio, pp For an updated version by the same G. Prince see The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism at An excellent introduction by Manfred Jahn can be found at: < If you prefer paper: The Cambridge Introduction to Narrative (paperback), by H. Porter Abbot, CUP Boccaccio and the Novella. The bibliography, especially on the Decameron, is vast. The site of the Dept of Italian of Brown University ogy/novella.shtml offers an extensive list of critical publications plus texts (in the original and translation) and various reading aids. However, do remember that, whenever you use this material, you are expected to cite your source just as when you use printed sources.
