3 Seres 3: T.G. Masaryk 125h Blue Ths study s based upon notes compled by Dr. A Šnoflák and publshed n the journal Flatele 12/1975 whch were later supplemented by F. Žampach s lectures. Ther observatons determned that a prntng block of 25 stamps was repeatedly used four tmes n each of the two etched 100-stamp plates. In addton to ther descrptons and drawng of flaws n the plates, they descrbed three flaws n the negatves. The core of ther work was the determnaton of the dentfcaton marks for the and I stamps, thus demonstratng that ths ssue was produced usng two basc types of prntng blocks. They called to our attenton the fact that the POFIL catalog faled to characterze the varaton of the denomnaton numerals 125. Postons not descrbed by the research noted above were added by Zdeněk Ryvola and J. Chvalovský at a later date, publshed separately n Czech, and ncorporated nto ths Englsh translaton for the convenence of collectors. Types I 1

VN A Gap n the apple leaf on the left sde of the stamp (Only for ). VN B Curved notch n the lower left corner, corrected on some stamps (Only for ). VN C Gap n the shadng of the decoraton to the upper rght of the value tablet (Only for I). VN D Whte splotch under the letter K n ČESKO (I). VN E Colored splotches n the drawng above the Ý n the sgnature (Only for ). VN F Gap n the lower part of the frame around the mage of Masaryk (Only for I). VNG Dot n the upper part of the P s leg. Masaryk 125h Blue Remanng Flaws In addton to these ten flaws n the negatves, on each 100-stamp pane of stamps prnted from both plates were a set of other flaws, those whch occurred durng the etchng of the blocks as well as several that happened durng the prntng run. Correctons (Retouches, RVN) Because corrected flaws n the stamps are not prmary flaws, one may assume that each correcton was done on the plates before they were used to prnt the stamps: RVN, poston 17, Plate I, : Colored splotch on the shadng left of the Numerals 125. RVN, poston 12, Plate II, : Whte spot on the jacket s lapel. RVN, poston 67, Plate II, : Whte spot on the frame around the portrat. RVN, poston 77, Plate II, : Colored mark over the head. Pars of Types All 24 I stamps on both plates form horzontal or vertcal parngs wth Type I stamps, so-called type-pars, whch are scarce n the vertcal half. Along wth the domnant pared types, t s possble to collect stamps from ether plate, centered on the I n poston 80 wth a short numeral 2, pared n the horzontal drecton wth poston 79. Collectors are also nterested n vertcal pared types from poston 80 pared wth poston 70 or poston 80 pared wth poston 90. An evaluaton of the stamps and pared types used to support the research behnd the study of these stamps was gven n the catalog publshed by the Socety for Collectors of Typographc Stamps n

9 Seres 3: T.G. Masaryk 125h Blue Postal Use The stamps were most often used for regstered mal between September and January , normally wth 60h stamps. Some, however, were used as regular postage stamps on package wayblls and letters. On occason, they may be found on postcards sent abroad. 7
