De is also used frequently in idioms and adverbial phrases. Mafalda y su familia se van tres semanas de vacaciones. Mafalda and her familia are going on vacation for three weeks. De repente, Mafalda se levantó la mano y gritó Basta! Suddenly, Mafalda raised her hand and shouted Enough!.

De is often used in prepositional phrases of location: al lado de, a la derecha/izquierda de, cerca de, debajo de, detrás de, encima de. Mafalda está detrás de la mujer sentada en el banco. Mafalda is behind the woman sitting on the bench.

Desde expresses direction (from) and time (since). No hay novedades desde el martes. There hasn t been any news since Tuesday. Hasta corresponds to as far as in spatial relationships, until in time relationships, and up to for quantities. It can also be used as an adverb to mean even, as much/many as, or including. A veces, Mafalda tiene que leer hasta doce libros para la clase. Sometimes, Mafalda has to read as many as twelve books for class.

The prepositions en, entre, and sin En corresponds to several English prepositions, such as in, on, into, onto, by, and at. La radio está en el suelo, a lado de Mafalda. Mafalda encontró a sus padres en el museo. The radio is on the ground, next to Mafalda. Mafalda met her parents at the museum.

En is also used frequently in idioms and adverbial phrases. Mafalda está a favor de la paz. En cambio, está en contra de la guerra. Mafalda is in favor of peace. On the other hand, she is against war.

Entre generally corresponds to the English prepositions between and among. No debemos entrar en el conflicto; es mejor que lo resuelvan entre ellos. We shouldn t enter the conflict; it is better that they resolve it among themselves.

Entre is not followed by ti and mí, the usual pronouns that serve as objects of prepositions. Instead, the subject pronouns tú and yo are used. Entre tú y yo, creo que la mayoría de las religiones comparten los mismos valores. Between you and me, I think the majority of religions share the same values.

The preposition a The preposition a can mean to, at, for, upon, within, of, from, or by, depending on the context. Sometimes it has no direct translation in English. Hoy cuando Mafalda llegó a casa, vio a sus padres en el sofá. El padre de Mafalda estaba sentado a lado de su madre. Today when Mafalda arrived home, she saw her parents sitting on the sofa. Her father was sitting next to her mother.

The preposition a introduces indirect objects. Les prometió a Mafalda que irían a navegar. They promised Mafalda that they would go sailing. The preposition a can be used to give commands or make suggestions. A comer! A dormir! Let s eat! Time for bed!

The preposition hacia With movement, either literal or figurative, hacia means toward or to. La actitud de Mafalda hacia mí es negativa. Mafalda s attitude toward me is negative.

With time, hacia means approximately, around, about, or toward. El programa que Mafalda quiere ver empieza hacia las 8. The show that Mafalda wants to watch will begin around 8:00.

The preposition con The preposition con means with. A la madre de Mafalda le gustaría hablar con el professor de la clase de su hija. Mafalda s mother would like to talk to her daughter s instructor.
