1 Monterey County MECHANIC III DEFINITION Under general supervision, to diagnose and make complex mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction and mechanical equipment; to operate computerized diagnostic equipment; to lead the work of Mechanics I and II during the course of their work and to perform other work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS --~ Highly skilled, advance journey level, most technically proficient; train and lead, for example working on construction equipment in general. The Mechanic ill class is assigned to perfonn advanced journey level mechanical repairs to either heavy equipment and diesel powered trucks or automobiles, light trucks and other mechanical equipment. This class is responsible to provide lead direction, training and work review to a staff of Mechanics I and n in the maintenance and diagnostic repair of a variety of fleet items, and personally perfonn the most complex mechanical repairs. The position is distinguished by the higher level class of Supervising Mechanic in that the latter is responsible to supervise, review, plan, schedule, and coordinate the work of mechanics and other subordinate personnel in the central garage engaged in the maintenance and repair of Monterey County vehicles and equipment. This class is further distinguished by the lower level class of Mechanic II in that the latter works under direction, performing journey level diagnosis and repair of all types of defects in gas and diesel powered light and heavy equipment. Mechanics II do not schedule or supervise the work of subordinates nor perform the most highly skilled repairs. EXAMPLES OF D!ITlliS: 1. Leads Mechanic I and II staff by planning, organizing, coordinating, and assigning daily activities; give on the job training and instructions to subordinate staff; prepare performance evaluations; make recommendations to supervisor regarding promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs; 2. Ensures that crew members are aware of and in compliance with established safety practices and procedures; Class Code: 72C24

2 Mechanic ill 3, Participates in the selection of employees; evaluates training and development needs of staff and arranges for training; Participates in major and minor mechanical repairs on automobiles, light and heavy motorized equipment powered by gas or diesel engines; determines work priorities, checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to see that the supervisor's instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met; 5. Inspects, diagnoses and perfonns repair, overhaul, modification, fabrication and maintenance on various types of heavy construction equipment, such as cranes, loaders, graders, scrapers, compressors, asphalt pavers, trucks, tractors, buses, automotive and light equipment. Maintains reference materials such as manuals, technical guides, policies and procedures, directives, project files and relevant background documents and makes available policies, procedures and written instructions from the supervisor; 7. Reports to the supervisor periodically on team and individual work accomplishments, problems, progress in mastering tasks and work processes, and individual and team training needs; 8 Lead the team in assessing its strengths and weaknesses and provide leadership to the team in exploring alternatives and determining what improvements can be made (e.g., in work methods, processes and procedures); Resolve simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others, such as formal grievances and appeals, to the supervisor or an appropriate management official; 10. Communicate team consensus and recommendation to the supervisor on actions affecting team and individual awards, rewards, and recognition; informs employees of available employee benefits, services and work related activities; 11. Intercede with the supervisor on behalf of the team to inform the supervisor of performance management issues/problems and to recommend/request related actions, such as: assignments, reassignments, promotions, and performance appraisals. nc24 2

3 Mechanic III QUALIFICATIONS A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledges, skills and abilities: Knowledl!e and Skills: Knowledge of: 1. Principles of effective lead duties including: Explain team goals and objectives to Mechanic I and II staff; assisteam in organizing to accomplish work, coach, facilitate, solve work problems, recommen disciplinary measures as needed. 2. Methods, tools, specialized testing equipment, shop manuals, methods of repair and service used to maintain heavy, light, construction and special equipment. 3. Principles and techniques of repair and maintenance of gas, diesel, alternative fuel, heavy and light vehicles and construction and special equipment. 4. Correct use of hand, power, precision and test tools/equipment used in the servicing and repairing automotive equipment. 5. Theory and operation of internal combustion engines. Skill and Ability to: 1. p~ organize, evaluate, and coordinate daily activities of shop personnel, and maintain quality control 2. Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers. 3. Diagnose mechanical defects in a wide variety of equipment and keep current on changes in equipment. 4. Properly and safely utilize shop tools and equipment. EXAMPLES OF EXP~RIENCE/EDUCA TIONffRAINING The knowledges, skills and abilities listed above may be acquired through various types of experiences, education or training, typically: Education: Completion of the equivalent of two years of classroom training and supervised on-thejob training in automotive and heavy equipment mechanics. 72C24 3

4 Mechanic ill Completion of a heavy equipment mechanical training program, leading to an Apprentice Mechanic Certificate. OR Completion of training courses leading to any of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence Repair Certificates. E~rience: Three years of experience performing journey level mechanical work including work on automotive and/or heavy duty construction equipment plus some lead experience. OR Two years as a Mechanic II in Monterey County performing journey level mechanical work on automotive and/or heavy duty construction equipment plus some lead experience. REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing as required by the Omm"bus Transportation Employee Testing Act of As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to: 1. Possess a valid California Class C Driver's License. 2. Possess or acquire both a valid California Class A Driver's License and required endorsements necessary to operate fleet equipment, during the probationary period. 3 Pass a pre-employment physical examination. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS The physical and sensory abilities required for this classification includes: 1 Ability to kneel, crawl and climb sufficient to carry out the requirements of the job. 2.
