1 APPLYING FOR A JOB AT THE PIER GRADE LEVEL(S) K-12 LESSON OBJECTIVE All students will learn about the basic information needed to complete a job application. Older students will learn about the information required in order to apply for a job, and will learn how to complete a standard job application. Younger students will practice answering basic informational questions (such as address and telephone number). BACKGROUND/PRIOR KNOWLEDGE NEEDED No prior knowledge is necessary for this lesson. If students will be participating in previous Pier lessons, it will enhance their knowledge about the Pier and less time will need to be spent in the Motivation section of this lesson as students will have a good foundational understanding of the Pier. If this lesson is done without prior lessons, then the teacher will need to spend more time in the Motivation section of this lesson. EDUCATION STANDARD(S) California Career Technical Model Curriculum Standards: Grades Seven Through Twelve Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation Industry Sector Foundation Standards 2.0 Communication Writing 2.5: Write job applications and résumés. 3.0 Career Planning and Management 3.6 Know important strategies for self-promotion in the hiring process, such as job applications, resume writing, interviewing skills, and preparation of a portfolio. MATERIALS NEEDED Students will need access to the internet in order to complete the first part of this lesson independently. However, students can work with the whole group to view the website online if access to individual computers is not feasible. In the second part of this lesson, students are not working on a live application but are working on a sample application provided by the teacher. Ideally, students will have access to computers to begin the assignment as most job applications are now available online and it will help students begin to navigate the process of looking online for employment. The school s computer lab should be checked for availability prior to the scheduling of this lesson.

2 The teacher will need to download and copy a sample job application (see Day 2) for older students (see attachment). MOTIVATION This lesson should be taught after students have already learned about the Pier and have participated in previous career lessons. While this lesson focuses on filling out an application, students will need a broader understanding of job duties and responsibilities than is provided in previous lessons in order to best understand what type of information is necessary for a job application. However, this lesson can be done before other lessons if the following motivation is discussed: CHECK FOR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Ask students about different types of jobs people would have working on the Pier. What are different things people do on the Pier? For primary students, teacher will write down students responses on chart paper. Older students can write responses independently. If this was already completed in a previous lesson, it can be done briefly as a review. Ask students how they think people get a job. Have a class discussion about what students think the process is for obtaining employment. BUILD BACKGROUND: Explain to students that one step in getting a new job is completing a job application. Before students will go for an interview, they will have to apply for a job. Ask if anyone has any ideas what a job application is, and what types of questions potential employers will ask. Explain to students that a lot of people apply for the same job and employers use applications to look for applicants that have the experience and skills that would be best for a job. Explain to students that during this lesson, they will be learning about job applications and will even fill out a sample application. DIRECT INSTRUCTION This will be a two-part lesson: Day 1 (Whole group): Review a sample job application and discuss appropriate answers. 1. Click on link to website: Students should be seated at individual computers connected to the internet (individual or in pairs) OR students can be seated whole group with the teacher projecting a live internet page for the class to watch. 2. Scroll down to bottom of page, click on Employment 3. Read through narrative on page. Discuss: What is the minimum age to apply? (16) What type of experience is necessary? (None! They will train) What types of requirements are there to apply? (Must be able to work weekends and holidays) What are the ways to apply for positions with Pacific Park? (Online and paper)

3 4. Click on Apply for a Job Online. Review the parts of an application and the types of information required to complete an application. 5. For older students, make a list of the types of information they will need in order to complete an application. For younger students, review general information only, such as address, telephone number, and references. 6. Older students should be given a list of information they need to gather at home, such as previous employment information and references. Discuss appropriate references. Previous employers should not be included as references as they will be listed in other sections of the application. Parents and other family members are generally not included as employers expect these people to give good references. Appropriate references for students would include sports coaches, teachers, and administrators. 7. Older students should be given the following assignment: On (DATE), please bring all the information that you will need to complete a job application. This includes your full address, previous employment information (dates of employment, name(s) of supervisors, and phone number of employer), three personal references (including address and phone), address, and social security number (not necessary to complete this assignment, but explain to students that they will always need this information for employment). 8. Younger students should be given the following assignment: Request that parents give their children their full home address and phone number(s). For references, the name of the teacher and one other adult at the school can be used. Day 2 (Partners): Complete a job application Teachers should prepare for the lesson by: 9. Students should not work on the live application unless they are 16 or older AND would like to actually apply for a position at the Pier. Older students: Older students will work in pairs to complete the application for employment at Pacific Park. The application does not need to be completed, but students should work to complete as much of the application as possible, and should collaborate with their partners to determine which questions they need assistance with or more information to complete. For example, if

4 a student does not know his/her social security number they should note that this is something that is required of all applicants and they will need to work with their parent/guardian to obtain this information. Younger students: Depending on the age and ability level of the students, the teacher will determine if the students should fill out any of the sample application OR just practice writing and memorizing their address and phone number. Depending on the age and ability level of the students, the teacher can take the sample application and modify it for the students in the class so that it has as few items as: name, date of birth, address, phone number, references (use teacher and other school staff such as PE coach, librarian). Depending on the age and ability level of the students, the teacher can add more items from the sample application. GROUP/INDEPENDENT WORK Instructions are embedded within Direct Instruction directions. ACCOMMODATIONS AND MODIFICATIONS This content of this lesson has already been modified during the lesson so that students in all grade levels can participate. The basic job application is intended for students 16 and older. All students in middle and high school should be able to complete the sample application, or parts of it, and the application itself should not be modified. For younger students, see the modifications in the Direct Instruction directions. Students with special needs may benefit from breaking the assignment down into smaller parts. The job application can be divided into sections. Color coding each section may help some students; this can be achieved by copying different sections on different colored paper. Working on one section, one color, or one page at a time may be appropriate for some students. The teacher may opt to create a completed sample application for students who need a visual model as a frame of reference. ASSESSMENT/WRAP UP Each child will have a completed application at the end of this assignment. The applications should be turned in to the teacher for review. The goal of this assignment is for the students to have a basic understanding of the job application. The teacher can check for understanding for each student by reviewing the final product and determining if the written answers are appropriate. Students who need additional assistance with this assignment may need the teacher to review inappropriate answers, provide a sample response, and then be given time to revise their application after the discussion with the teacher.
