1 French 4 Syllabus Instructor Information: Teacher: Mrs. Susanna Babko Room: Belle Vernon Area High School, Room 202 Contact: Phone: ; ext Website: Required Text: Bon Voyage Level 2 Bon Voyage Workbook and Audio Activities Additional Resources: Three ring binder (about 1 ) Two pencils Tab dividers for your binder (optional) French/English dictionary (optional) Course Description: French 4 is an advanced study of the French language and francophone cultures. This course serves as the first part of a capstone to French study in high school and as a bridge between intermediate (high school) and advanced (college) level language study. Students will communicate primarily in the target language. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. In our daily lessons we will: Participate in comprehension activities by listening to audio CDs, videos, teacher input, and the speech of your classmates Communicate in spoken French by providing information about yourself, your community and others.

2 Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to: 1. Talk about train and air travel. 2. Describe past events using the passé composé and imparfait. 3. Academic Honesty: Any work submitted by the student shall be his/her own. Work taken from others shall be deemed as unacceptable. Any doubts will initiate the completion of an alternative assignment or a zero on the required effort, depending on the severity of the infraction. Class Policies and Expectations: 1. Bring all needed materials to class each day. 2. Be in your seat when the bell rings, working on your bell work. 3. Respect all people and their property. 4. Listen actively when someone is speaking. 5. Seek teacher assistance when needed. 6. Use cell phones ONLY when instructed to do so by the teacher.

3 Disabilities: If you have a disability that requires special accommodations, you need to notify the teacher no later than the 2 nd week of class. Course Grading Criteria: All quizzes, tests, and projects will be graded according to the Belle Vernon Area School District grading policy. Total points will be accumulated for all evaluated efforts in this class rather than having letter grades per each effort. The grading scale is as follows: A B C D F Emphasis will be on formal assessments. Therefore grades will be weighted in this course. Formal Assessments will account for 90% of a student s grade (quizzes, tests, projects, performance-based rubrics, essays, graded homework, etc.) Informal Assessments will account for 10% of a student s grade (homework for completion, class participation, exit tickets, etc.) Assignments per Quarter: The basics of language learning will be assessed. These include: reading, writing, listening, speaking, culture, grammar, and vocabulary. A comprehensive exam will be given after each unit of instruction. You will be expected to write, read, speak, and listen for each exam. Your grade will be based on exams, quizzes, projects, some daily assignments, bell work, writing assignments, and homework. Grading criteria and rubrics will be distributed for each project. Grades will be posted on Edline at least once each week. Please check Edline regularly to keep track of your progress. TOTAL POINTS = 250 Points (approximate) *Assignments or assessments may vary due to pace of class and individualized instruction.

4 Academic Standards: Students will be reacquainted with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards that have been adopted by the Department of Education, along with the Common Core Standards that are in the process of being implemented nationwide. Students will be made aware of the importance of the standards and the efforts to meet them. Edline: If Grades will be updated every Friday on Edline.
