3 General remarks c/o MUMM - Measurement Service Oostende : i) All scientists involved in deck operations are to wear appropriate safety clothing such as safety shoes/boots, gloves etc.. Only safety helmets are available onboard. ii) Please note that scientists are invited to bring their own GSM. The Belgica GSM shall be made available only in exceptional circumstances such as communications related to operational aspects of the ongoing cruise (e.g. calls to MUMM concerning ODAS) and in case of an emergency. iii) All participants are requested to settle their accounts aboard in Euro (small bills please). Checks are no longer accepted, and neither credit cards nor proton facilities are available. iv) Following governmental regulations, as from January 1st 2006 smoking inside the ship is entirely prohibited. 4 3. SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES DCP-KD Implementation of the continuous investigation laid down in section 3, 2, subsection 3, of the law of June 13th 1969, concerning the exploration and exploitation of non living resources on the Belgian Continental Shelf, and the concession decisions. The follow up of the repercussions of the sand extraction on the stability of the sand banks en surrounding area in the exploitation zones, in order to formulate policies concerning the exploitation in the concession zones on a scientific base. The sediments of the Belgian continental shelf will be investigated in order to: 1. Establish the impact of sand extraction on the sand budget and seabed sediments. 2. Survey the sand winning sites to detect significant changes of the seabed sediments and the morphology of the seabed and sand banks in order to guarantee the availability of sand to extract in the future. BMM-SS The main purpose of G2LAT is to meet the needs expressed by the FPS Economy (program DCP-KD) i.e. to have a corrective model which allows to define in real time the vertical position of the multi beam sounder available onboard the R/V Belgica with respect to various usual reference surfaces (LAT, GLLWS ). Sea trials are necessary to test the positioning system and to estimate its practical accuracy. BMM-PR The project is part of the continuous surveillance and evaluation of the quality of the marine environment in the region of the Belgian continental shelf (BCS) in the framework of the national obligations toward the Joint Assessment en Monitoring Programme (JAMP) of the OSPAR commission and the Water Framework Directive of the EC ((2000/60/EC). MUMM determines nutrients, salinity, suspended matter, dissolved oxygen, TOC and POC, chlorophyll a, phaeophytine, optical parameters and organic contaminants in the water column. Phytoplankton biomass and species composition as well as benthos species composition and biomass are also determined as part of the monitoring programme. The other determinants (e.g. heavy metals and organic contaminants) in sediment and biota are determined in collaboration with ILVO-Visserij. Quality assurance and quality control during sampling and in the laboratory receive a high priority within the project. LPAE DeBock (Ugent) This proposal concerns the implementation of the phytoplankton monitoring of Belgian coastal waters in the context of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and OSPAR. It concerns more specifically extra monitoring activities (plague alg Phaeocystis and phytoplanktontaxa cell counts), which are part of an operational monitoring to evaluate the ecological status of the Belgian coastal waters. 3
5 4. RESEARCH AREA - SAMPLING STATIONS DCP-KD Flemish Banks, Gootebank, Thorntonbank and Hinderbanken (control zone I and II and exploration area, based on the RD of November 16, 1977) and reference area s on the BCS. 1. Multibeam surveying of reference areas: - KBMA, KBMB, R2, BRMA, BRMB and ODMA on the Vlaamse Banken; - TBMA on the Thorntonbank. 2. Multibeam surveying along decca-lines across the Vlaamse Banken. 3. Multibeam surveying on the Hinderbanken. BMM-SS The activities of BMM-SS will take place during the transits between the different monitoring stations from BMM-PR and LPAE-DDB and during the multibeam survey s. Additional tracks are planned Thursday afternoon: the coordinates will be provided on board. 4

7 Sampling LPAE-DDB: During the campaign, water samples will be taken at the 9 assigned stations (W01, W02, W03, W05, W06, W07, W08, W09, W10) with 2 Niskin bottles at a depth of 3 meter. A surface sample of seawater will be taken with a bucket and a rope. The secchi depth will be measured with a secchi disc. Each sample will be filtered and fixed in the lab.
