5 3. SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES BMM-PR: MONIT project The project is part of the continuous surveillance and evaluation of the quality of the marine environment in the region of the Belgian continental shelf (BCS) in the framework of the national obligations toward the Joint Assessment en Monitoring Programme (JAMP) of the OSPAR commission and the Water Framework Directive of the EC ((2000/60/EC). MUMM determines nutrients, salinity, suspended matter, dissolved oxygen, TOC and POC, chlorophyll a, phaeophytine, optical parameters and organic contaminants in the water column. Phytoplankton biomass and species composition as well as benthos species composition and biomass are also determined as part of the monitoring programme. The other determinants (e.g. heavy metals and organic contaminants) in sediment and biota are determined in collaboration with ILVO Visserij. Quality assurance and quality control during sampling and in the laboratory receive a high priority within the project. WIV-JV Radiological survey of the North Sea in the vicinity of the Franco-Belgian border; influence of aquatic releases from foreign nuclear sites on the marine environment; influence on the food chain. Radioactivity measurements on 25 fishes, 20 water samples (5 areas, 4x/y) and 20 sediment samples (5 areas, 4 x/y). Measurements: alpha spectrometry (fish and algae), gamma spectrometry (fish, algae, water and sediment), alpha- and beta-activity, K-40 (water). Programme in the frame of the Belgian Federal Agency of Nuclear Control. (FANC). Sampling by BMM-PR DCP-KD Implementation of the continuous investigation laid down in section 3, 2, subsection 3, of the law of June 13th 1969, concerning the exploration and exploitation of non living resources on the Belgian Continental Shelf, and the concession decisions. The follow up of the repercussions of the sand extraction on the stability of the sand banks en surrounding area in the exploitation zones, in order to formulate policies concerning the exploitation in the concession zones on a scientific base. The sediments of the Belgian continental shelf will be investigated in order to: 1. Establish the impact of sand extraction on the sand budget and seabed sediments. 2. Survey the sand winning sites to detect significant changes of the seabed sediments and the morphology of the seabed and sand banks in order to guarantee the availability of sand to extract in the future. BMM-SS/g Definition of the relationship between the MLLWS and LAT surfaces, used as reference surfaces for the bathymetry on the Belgian Continental Shelf, and the heights with respect to the WGS84 ellipsoïd. Design and implementation of transfer model between the depths measured against MLLWS or LAT and the heights with respect to the WGS84 ellipsoïd, for the whole Belgian Continental Shelf. The project G2LAT takes place in the frame of the Action in support of the federal authority's strategic priorities. 4

6 BMM-MF MOMO stands for the monitoring and modelling of cohesive sediment transport and the evaluation of the effects on the marine ecosystem due to dredging and dumping operations. The primary objective of the project is the study of the cohesive sediments on the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) using numerical models and field measurements. The combination of monitoring and modelling will provide information on the transport processes of this fine fraction and is therefore fundamental to answer questions on composition, origin and residence of it on the BCS, the change in characteristics of this sediment due to dredging and dumping operations, the effects of the natural variability, the impact on the marine ecosystem especially due to alterations of habitats, the estimation of the net input of hazardous substances in the marine environment and the possibilities to reduce these last two items. 5

Materiaal wordt voorzien om water op te pompen van op een diepte rond de twintig meter, naar een HDPE tank. 9 DCP-KD and BMM-SS/g 1. Acoustic sediment classification: the classification is based on newly recorded multibeam data on a zone near the port of Zeebrugge (Pas van het Zand - 51 N E7.8 ; 51 N E7.8 ; 51 N E13.0 ; 51 N E12.0 ). These data are completed with a number of bottom samples with Van Veen grab and Reineck box corer. The exact positions and number of samples will be determined after the acoustical classification. 2. In cooperation with the G2LAT project an area near Zeebrugge will be surveyed with the EM3002D multibeam. A first set of lines will be recorded and processed with RTK data, a second one using the traditional method (tide measurements). The comparison will provide us with an idea of the usefulness and accuracy of the new method. BMM-MF 1.
