3 What is an Invention? IDEA! Have you ever stopped to wonder how that enormous airplane gets up in the sky or how we get light by screwing in a bulb? At one time, these things did not exist. Someone had to invent them. Webster's defines an invention as; the creation of something in the mind a creation (a new device or process) resulting from study and experimentation the act of inventing An invention is any new thought or idea that someone puts to work. Anyone can be an inventor. Anyone can take their ideas and make them known. All it takes is an idea and hard work to see it become a reality. Everything around you started with an idea. Most of the time, an invention is started out of a need for something. Most inventions, once created, seem so simple. Think about the wheel. Image what your life would be like without the wheel. There would be no cars, trains, scooters, or roller skates. Have you ever stopped to think about all of the inventions that you use in a day? How your life would be different without them? In this study, we will learn about some of the people who had a simple idea. However, instead of just thinking about it, they acted on it. Because of their ideas, our lives today have become much easier. Do you have an idea for something that has not been made before? If you have an original or unique idea, you could become an inventor, too!

5 Henry Ford Henry Ford was born in Greenfield, Michigan on July 30, He left school at 15 to work on his father's farm but in 1879 moved to Detroit where he became an apprentice in a machine shop. At an early age, Henry showed an interest in mechanical things and a dislike for farm work. His first self-propelled vehicle car was not at all like any car one has ever seen! The body looked like a small, wooden box. It had one seat, a steering tiller, bike wheels, and an electric bell for a horn! As funny as it looked, it still ran! By August 1899, Ford had raised enough money to start his own company. His first group of investors left after he spent $86,000 without producing a car that could be sold. Eventually, he produced a car that appeared at the Grosse Pointe Blue Ribbon track at Detroit. Its performance helped him to sell 6,000 $10 dollar shares in his new company to a new group of investors. In 1909, Ford made the decision to manufacture only one car, the Model T. Initially it took 14 hours to assemble a Model T car. By improving mass production methods, he reduced this to 1 hour 33 minutes. This lowered the overall cost of each car and enabled his company to undercut the price of other cars on the market. Between 1908 and 1916, the selling price of the Model T fell from $1,000 to $360. The average person could afford this price! Cars were no longer for just the rich and well off. In the 1920s, Ford s business, the Ford Motor Company grew rapidly. In 1925, it was producing 10,000 cars every 24 hours. By 1927, it had sold over 15,000,000 Model T cars. However, sales began to decline, and the General Motors Chevrolet became the current best-selling car. Ford had a stroke in 1938 but returned to run the company after his son died in Ford died on April 7, 1947 in Fair Lane, Dearborn, Michigan.

7 Dr. Jonas Salk Dr. Jonas Salk s discovery led to one of the most dramatic breakthroughs in the history of medicine. The 1950 s were a time of fear and anxiety for many parents all over the world. Millions of once healthy, active children were becoming infected with a crippling disease known as poliomyelitis, or polio. Even though adults were contracting the disease too, it was spreading much more rampantly among the children. This disease had no cure and no one could figure out what was causing the outbreak. All measures to prevent the spread of the disease failed; even quarantining did not stop its spread. The disease was out of control with no cure in sight. Parents lived in fear that their child would be its next victim. Polio is a disease that attacks the nervous system causing the muscles to waste away and can even result in death. Many who contracted polio recovered completely with few or no side effects. Many others who were left paralyzed and had little help. Braces for the legs were very heavy, painful and cost more than the average family could afford. Those who ended up in a wheelchair from paralysis found themselves in limiting situations with no ramp or elevator. Those things were quite rare in the 1950's. What a welcome relief to the world when Dr. Salk and his research partner, Dr. Albert Sabin, announced that they had developed a vaccine that would protect people from polio! By August 1954, 4 million people had received the vaccine. The number of polio cases started dropping drastically. In 1955, there were 28,985 cases of polio; in 1956, 14,647; in 1957, 5,894. Today about 1500 people contract polio each year, mainly in under-developed countries that have few or no vaccines. Even today, there is still no cure for polio.
