EASILY REPLACEABLE MEMBRANE; no special tools required. AUTOMATIC COMPENSATION for changes in membrane permeability with temperature. AUTOMATIC PRESSURE EQUALIZATION maintains correct membrane tension. VARIOPOL CONNECTOR OPTION allows the sensor to be replaced without running new cable. FEATURES AND APPLICATIONS The Model 499ADO sensor is intended for the continuous determination of dissolved oxygen between 0-20 ppm. The primary application is aeration basins in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. The Model 499ADO is a membrane-covered amperometric sensor. The sensor consists of a gas-permeable membrane stretched tightly over a gold cathode. A silver anode and an electrolyte solution complete the internal circuit. During operation, oxygen diffuses from the sample through the membrane to the cathode. A polarizing voltage applied to the cathode reduces the oxygen to hydroxide. The reaction produces a current, which the analyzer measures. The current is directly proportional to the rate at which oxygen reaches the cathode, which is ultimately proportional to the concentration of oxygen in the sample. Because the rate of diffusion of oxygen through the membrane depends on temperature, sensor response must be corrected for temperature changes. A Pt 100 RTD in the sensor measures the temperature, and the analyzer automatically performs the correction. Calibration is easy. Simply expose the sensor to water-saturated air and press a button on the analyzer. The analyzer measures the barometric pressure and calculates the equilibrium solubility of atmospheric oxygen at the prevailing temperature and pressure. (5081-A, and Xmt-A analyzers require the user to manually enter the barometric pressure.) Maintenance is fast and easy. Replacing the membrane requires no special tools or fixtures. Simply place a few drops of electrolyte solution in the membrane assembly, place it on the cathode, and screw the retainer in place. To replenish the electrolyte solution, unscrew the fill plug, add the reagent from a squeeze bottle, and replace the plug. Pressure changes have little influence on sensor response. A flexible bladder in the sensor prevents distortion of the membrane by keeping the pressure inside the sensor equal to the sample pressure. Several mounting configurations are possible. For aeration basins and tanks, use the handrail mounting. For measuring oxygen in pipes, use a sidestream sample and install the sensor in either the flow tee or the low flow cell. The Model 499ADO sensor is available with a Variopol (VP) watertight connector. Wire the interconnecting cable to the analyzer and run the cable to the sensor. The sensor plugs into the cable receptacle. To replace the sensor, simply disconnect the Variopol fitting and plug in a new sensor.

5 ORDERING INFORMATION The Model 499ADO sensor is intended for the determination of dissolved oxygen at the ppm level. The sensor can be immersed directly in aeration basins using the handrail mounting assembly, or the sensor can be mounted in a variety of flow cells. The sensor is available with either an integral cable or a VP6 quick disconnect fitting. Three replacement membrane assemblies, three o-rings and a 4-oz (125 ml) bottle of electrolyte solution are provided with each sensor. 7 COMPATIBLE ANALYZERS AND TRANSMITTERS The Model 1056 Dual Input Analyzer offers the choice of single or dual sensor inputs in any combination of ph/orp, contacting or toroidal conductivity, chlorine, oxygen, or ozone. The analyzer features completely automatic air calibration for dissolved oxygen measurements. Simply expose the 499ADO sensor to water-saturated air and press a button. The analyzer measures the temperature and barometric pressure and automatically completes the calibration. The analyzer has two fully programmable analog outputs. Four fully programmable alarm relays are available as an option. The high contrast display shows measurement results in large, easy-toread digits, and the user can customize the display to show additional process variables or diagnostic information. Menu screens for programming are simple and intuitive. Plain language prompts (in seven user-selectable languages) guide the user through the procedures. The analyzer continuously monitors itself and the sensor for faults and alerts the user when it detects a problem. Basic troubleshooting assistance for faults and warnings is available at the touch of a button. HART and Profibus digital communications are also available. HART allows the user to communicate with the analyzer through AMS (Asset Management Solutions) from a host anywhere in the plant. The Model 5081-A Transmitter can be used with the 499ADO sensor to measure dissolved oxygen in a variety of applications, particularly where a robust, explosion-proof enclosure is needed. The dissolved oxygen reading is shown in large numerals in the top line of a two-line, seven-segment display. Local communication with the 5081-A is through a handheld infrared remote controller. Two digital communication protocols are also available: HART and Foundation Fieldbus. Digital communications allows the user to communicate with the transmitter through AMS (Asset Management Solutions) from a host anywhere in the plant. The Model 56 Dual Input Analyzer offers the choice of single or dual sensor inputs in any combination of ph/orp, contacting or toroidal conductivity, chlorine, oxygen, or ozone. The analyzer features completely automatic air calibration for dissolved oxygen measurements. Simply expose the sensor to water-saturated air and press a button. The Model Xmt-A Transmitter can be used with the 499ADO sensor to measure dissolved oxygen in a variety of applications, particularly in applications where loop power is needed. The Xmt-A has a two line display that can be configured to meet user requirements. Menu screens (in six languages) for configuring and calibrating are simple and intuitive. Two digital communication protocols are available: HART and Foundation Fieldbus. Ozone is also used as a disinfectant in bottling and food processing plants. The Model 499AOZ is a membrane-covered amperometric sensor. The sensor consists of a gas-permeable membrane stretched tightly over a gold cathode. A silver anode and an electrolyte solution complete the internal circuit. During operation, ozone diffuses from the sample through the membrane. Once inside the sensor, the ozone reacts with the electrolyte solution to form an intermediate compound. A polarizing voltage applied to the cathode completely reduces the intermediate. The reduction produces a current, which the analyzer measures. The current is directly proportional to the rate at which ozone diffuses through the membrane, which is ultimately proportional to the concentration of ozone in the sample. Because the rate of diffusion of ozone through the membrane depends on temperature, sensor response must be corrected for temperature changes. A Pt 100 RTD in the sensor measures the temperature, and the analyzer automatically performs the correction. Because ozone standards do not exist, the sensor must be calibrated against the results of a laboratory test run on a grab sample of the process liquid. Ozone solutions are unstable, so the sample must be tested immediately. Portable test kits are available from other manufacturers. Maintenance is fast and easy. The sensor is generally intended for mounting in an off-line flow cell. The sensor is available with either an integral cable or a VP6 quick disconnect fitting. The 499A TrDO is a membrane-covered amperometric sensor. The sensor consists of a gas-permeable TFE membrane stretched tightly over a gold cathode. A silver anode and an electrolyte solution complete the internal circuit. During operation, oxygen diffuses from the sample through the membrane to the cathode. A polarizing voltage applied to the cathode converts all the oxygen entering the sensor to hydroxide ions. The reaction produces a current, which the analyzer measures. The current is directly proportional to the rate at which oxygen reaches the cathode, which is ultimately proportional to the concentration of oxygen in the sample. An out-of-the-box 499A TrDO sensor is accurate at the 1 ppb level within five hours after being placed in service. Unlike competing sensors that use a separate oxygen-scavenging electrode, the 499A TrDO relies on a self-depleting design to reduce internal oxygen and achieve fast comedown. The result is a more robust, reliable sensor. The 499A TrDO sensor is available with a Variopol (VP) watertight connector. Wire the interconnecting cable to the analyzer and run the cable to the sensor. The sensor plugs into the cable receptacle. The Bx438 sensor utilizes a robust membrane, which increases the life of the membrane. The sensor is designed to withstand significantly more clean in place (CIP) cycles than other dissolved oxygen sensors. Unique Design: Most dissolved oxygen sensors operate by reduction of oxygen at the surface of the cathode. If the cathode is in direct contact with the solution, then interference effects from other substances may lead to inaccurate readings. The Model Bx438 cathode is covered with a gas permeable membrane. The oxygen diffusing through the membrane is completely reduced at the cathode, and the current between anode and cathode is proportional to the oxygen content in the sample. The design for the membrane is the key to achieving high performance. The Model Bx438 uses a proprietary membrane material. This thick, steel-meshedreinforced, double layer membrane enables the sensor to withstand high pressures and temperatures while maintaining high diffusion rates, resulting in stable outputs and fast response times. Longer Sensor Life/Less Maintenance: Due to the unique design of the sensor, maintenance is rarely required. The special double membrane design is less sensitive to contamination from protein and other fouling agents. The electrode construction guarantees excellent stability even after numerous sterilization cycles. Competitive dissolved oxygen sensors require maintenance after as few as 3-5 cycles. The model Bx438 sensor lasts through as many as cycles. Minimal Flow Sensitivity: Model Bx438 membrane material and overall design ensure that the flow rate has minimal effect on the sensor's measurements. The unique design also experiences minimal drift in low flow environments. Zero Polarization Voltage: Many competitive amperometric dissolved oxygen sensors set the polarization voltage to -670 mv. This set point may lead to offset readings due to carbon dioxide effects at low oxygen concentrations. The Model Bx438 sensor uses a zero polarization voltage setpoint, which results in the most accurate dissolved oxygen readings. Total Cost of Ownership Comparison: Many competitive amperometric dissolved oxygen sensors require frequent maintenance, such as membrane replacement, cathode replacement, and electrolyte replenishment. The Model Bx438 sensor s robust design minimizes the maintenance needed for a stable dissolved oxygen measurement. 19 Product Data Sheet PDS 71-RDO April 2010 Model RDO RDO Optical Dissolved Oxygen Sensor and Analyzer SINGLE OR DUAL INPUT ANALYZER OXYGEN SENSOR uses the fluorescence quenching method ACCURATE READINGS: ±0.1 ppm between 0.0 and 8.0 ppm LOW MAINTENANCE: sensing cap requires only annual replacement APPLICATIONS The RDO sensor and analyzer is intended for the determination of dissolved oxygen in water. It is ideal for use in wastewater aeration basins and ponds. The sensor uses the fluorescence quenching method. Unlike polarographic oxygen sensors, the RDO sensor does not require a flowing sample. It is also less affected by fouling than polarographic sensors. FEATURES The RDO sensor is available with either integral or quickdisconnect cable. The maximum cable length is 4000 ft (1219 m). A 1-¼ in FNPT fitting at the rear of the sensor allows a threaded pipe to be screwed into the sensor so it can be submerged in tanks or basins. Calibration is simple. The sensor can be calibrated either against a referee instrument or in water-saturated air. Air calibration is completely automatic. A barometric pressure sensor inside the analyzer measures the air pressure, and a thermistor in the sensor measures temperature. The analyzer automatically calculates the equilibrium solubility of atmospheric oxygen in water under the prevailing temperature and pressure. A manually-entered correction for salinity is also available. Maintenance is fast and easy and consists primarily of replacing the sensing cap every year. No special tools are required. The analyzer accepts one or two sensors. It has a two line display, which can be customized to display mg/l (ppm) oxygen, % saturation, oxygen partial pressure, or temperature for either sensor. The display can also be configured to display the current barometric pressure. The analyzer has two loop-powered 4-20 ma analog outputs assignable to either sensor and to any measurement (concentration, temperature, or partial pressure). Modbus/ RS485 serial communication is also available through the analyzer or direct from the sensor. Two high voltage and two low voltage alarm relays are standard. The alarms are assignable to any measurement and can be programmed for high/low logic, setpoint, and deadband. THEORY The RDO sensor uses fluorescence quenching to measure dissolved oxygen. Fluorescence is an optical property of certain molecules. When a molecule absorbs light, its energy increases, and the molecule is said to be excited. Because RDO is a registered trademark of In-Situ Inc. All rights reserved.

20 the excited molecule is unstable, it quickly loses the absorbed energy typically as heat or light. If the latter occurs, the emitted light, called fluorescence, is always of lower energy (longer wavelength) than the absorbed light. (Some of the absorbed light is lost as heat.) An excited molecule can also lose energy by colliding with another molecule, notably oxygen. Because a collision with oxygen provides a path out of the excited state that does not emit light, oxygen reduces the intensity of (or quenches) the fluorescence. The greater the concentration of oxygen, the greater is the reduction in fluorescence intensity. Quenching also reduces the fluorescence lifetime. If no oxygen is present, fluorescence will persist for a certain amount of time after the exciting light is shut off. If oxygen is present, the lifetime decreases because quenching provides an additional path out of the excited state, leaving fewer molecules to fluoresce. Unlike intensity measurements, lifetime measurements do not depend on the intensity of the exciting light, and, thus, are less subject to drift. The fluorescence lifetime can be conveniently measured by modulating the exciting light, which causes the emitted light to be modulated at the same frequency, but shifted in phase. The amount of phase shift is a measure of the fluorescence lifetime and the oxygen concentration. The RDO sensor consists of a sensing foil impregnated with the fluorescent material and covered with an opaque film to keep out sunlight. Oxygen from the sample diffuses into the sensing foil. Inside the sensor, light from a blue LED falls on the foil. The fluorescent molecules absorb the blue light and re-emit it as red light. A photodiode measures the red light. A red filter in front of the photodiode blocks any scattered blue light and allows only the red fluorescence to reach the detector. Circuitry inside the sensor modulates the exciting light and measures the phase shift between the exciting light and the fluorescence. The microprocessor converts the phase shift into fluorescence lifetime and calculates the concentration of oxygen in the sample. The result is sent as digital signal to the analyzer, which displays the oxygen concentration. Fluorescence quenching by oxygen is strongly dependent on temperature. A thermistor inside the RDO sensor measures the temperature, and the microprocessor applies an empirical correction factor. 26 Model Hx348 sensor provides a solution for difficult ph measurements. This combination ph sensor offers the unique Tri-Triple reference technology. The Tri-Triple reference is made up of three (3) separate peripheral liquid junctions that make contact with the solution, and then two (2) inner junctions that protect the reference. The first junction eliminates flow sensitivity and maintains a steady reference signal. The three overall reference junctions work together to help maintain a drift-free ph signal and fight poisoning ions (i.e. sulfides), even after numerous sterilization cycles. Applications for this sensor can be found in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and food processing industries. The Model Hx348 ph sensor is a combination ph sensor that uses an S7 connector plug for quick disconnect from the cable. It is offered in four (4) different insertion lengths in either a disposable or refillable reference design. The refillable sensor is ideal for critical measurements in difficult applications i.e., sulfides, proteins, and sugars. It is offered with either the Tri-Triple reference junction for use in media containing proteins, or with a single, clog-free, platinum junction for use in media containing sulfides. The special electrolyte has been developed to inhibit reference contamination. The disposable sensor has been developed to allow simplicity of use while still providing a stable ph signal over the long life of the sensor. Both the refillable and disposable sensors can be used with the pressurized mounting accessory or a similar assembly.
