3 Our Keynote speakers Dr John Males Dr Males, Principal surgeon at Sydney Cornea Clinic, is a leader in laser vision correction, cataract surgery, corneal transplantation including DSEK, DSAEK and DALK, keratoconus treatments including collagen cross linking, corneal rings (kerarings and intacs), phakic intraocular lenses, and anterior segment reconstruction. Dr Males is the head of the Cornea Unit of Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Males is a consultant ophthalmologist at Sydney Eye Hospital, St Vincent's Public and Private Hospitals, Concord Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. Dr Males is a clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney Macquarie University. He has consulting rooms in Sydney and Liverpool and is the Chair of the Corneal Unit at Sydney Eye Hospital, as well as the acting Head of Department of Ophthalmology for St Vincent's Public Hospital. He is also the Production Manager of the NSW Lions Eye Bank. Dr Males is a Principal Coordinator for the Masters of Refractive Surgery at the University Sydney, the first post graduate degree in refractive surgery in the world. Dr Males underwent his medical training at the University of Sydney and his Ophthalmic training in Sydney Eye Hospital, and Bristol Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. Dr Males has been at the forefront of ophthalmology and has introduced numerous surgical techniques in Australia. His achievements include: The first in Australia to perform DSAEK endothelial corneal transplantation The first in Australia to perform collagen cross linking (C3R, UVX) for the stabilisation of keratoconus The first in Australia to perform custom iris implant surgery with the human optics iris prosthesis Amongst the first surgeons to perform laser assisted cataract surgery in Australia Dr Males performs laser vision correction including blade free intralase LASIK and laser surface ablation. Dr Males offers all the latest technologies in the treatment of eye disease, including blade free LASIK using the Intralase laser; and laser surface ablation. Dr Males customises the treatment options to each individual circumstance, as no two individuals are alike. Dr Males has published numerous articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, and is a frequent speaker at local and international meetings ophthalmic meetings. Dr Ravi Singh Dr Ravi Singh VMO and Head of the Ophthalmology Department at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Australia. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. Dr Singh graduated from medicine at the University of Sydney. He completed his Ophthalmology training at the Sydney Eye Hospital. He has also undertaken advanced training in cornea transplant surgery, corrective laser eye surgery, laser cataract surgery, cataract surgery and eyelid surgery from London, UK. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons, American Society of Cataract Surgery and Refractive Surgery and the Cornea Society of America and Australia. He teaches laser eye surgery to other eye specialists through the University of Sydney Masters in Refractive Surgery course. He is a co-director
4 at Eye Specialists Private, a Private Practice in Kotara in the city of Newcastle. Dr Singh is also a co-director of Hunter Laser Vision, a laser refractive surgery centre in The Junction, Newcastle. In addition to clinical work Dr Ravi Singh has published and presented numerous papers and presentations in internationally recognised Ophthalmology Journals and Meetings. Dr Ravi SIngh has a strong commitment to teaching both Ophthalmologists and other medical professionals. He is a board member of the Hunter Post Graduate Medical Institute (HPMI) and teaches Refractive Surgery to other eye specialists through the University of Sydney. Dr Singh is regularly asked to provide formal teaching presentations to General Practitioners and Optometrists in the Newcastle area as well as the Lower and Upper Hunter Area and the mid-north Coast of NSW. Dr Singh s ophthalmic areas of special interest are Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Corneal and Eyelid surgery, and Pterygium Surgery. Margaret Lam BOptom UNSW, OA, CCLSA, OSO, IAO State President of the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia (NSW) Margaret Lam graduated from the University of New South Wales in She started theeyecarecompany in 2005, a small group of successful independent optometry practices that focus on professional eyecare and designer eyewear across four locations in greater Sydney and Sydney CBD. She is a recipient of the Neville Fulthorpe Award for Clinical Excellence. She practices full scope optometry, but with a passionate interest in specialty contact lenses, particularly keratoconus and orthokeratology, retail aspects of optometry and successful patient communication. Her experience includes working in independent practices, chain practices and corporate multinational optometry practices, as a locum optometrist, and mentoring optometry students on specialty contact lens fitting. Margaret has also worked extensively in advisory role with leading contact lens companies, is a contributing guest writer for mivision on contact lenses, and is an extensive public speaker on topics spanning contact lenses, specialty contact lenses, practice building, retail aspects of optometry and patient communications. 5 Heidi Hunter BOptom UNSW, OA, CCLSA, OSO, IAO, ACBO Grad Cert Ocular Therapy, UNSW Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia Council Board Member Heidi Hunter completed her bachelor of Optometry from the University of NSW in 2000 and Ocular Therapeutics certificate in She is a principal optometrist at Custom Eyecare (formerly known as Marketown Optical) an independent full scope practice in Newcastle West. The practice is a placement partner with Flinders optometry students. Heidi has a special interest in contact lenses including orthokeratology, ocular diseases and behavioural optometry. Her work has ranged from general practice, laser refractive and keratoconic surgical consultations as well as post operative care of ophthalmic corneal and oculoplastics patients while working with leading Ophthalmologists. Heidi is a clinical supervisor at UNSW, a guest lecturer at University of Newcastle and a NSW board member for the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia (CCLSA). She is an experienced educator and has presented on contact lenses to peers, nurses, and general practitioners. Heidi has been a contributing writer to industry magazines Mivision and OA Contact Lenses, an optometric speaker on ABC radio, a mentor to optometry students at University of New South Wales (UNSW) and been an advisory member for the OA Competency Standards Committee. Dom Willson BOptom UNSW, OA, CCLSA, OSO, IAO, ACBO Grad Cert Ocular Therapy, UNSW Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia Member Dom is an optometrist and owner at Marketown Optical (Custom Eyecare), Newcastle. He is a visiting clinical supervisor at the UNSW Optometry Clinic, and a visiting optometrist for Brien Holden Vision Institute (formerly ICEE) Aboriginal Vision Clinics in rural & remote areas of Australia. He is a member of OA, CCLSA, ACBO, OSO, HML, and HPMI. He has spoken & lectured to university masters students, pharmacists, GPs, school teachers, community groups, business groups, and other optometrists. He is known to many Newcastle area optometrists from his time working as a locum for many practices in the late 1990s.
