3 2 Purpose of the Portfolio Your reflective learning portfolio will reflect, integrate, and synthesize your cumulative learning experiences from: CFD courses Study abroad programs Involvement in research project Internships. The portfolio will be a comprehensive view of your growth and maturation as a child and family development professional. 2

4 3 Where do I begin? 1. Review this tutorial 2. Sign and print the student agreement. **Make sure to print enough copies for you and for each of your upper division CFD professors. 3. Present a copy of your signed agreement to all of your upper division CFD professors on the first day of classes. 3

5 4 4. In your senior year, enroll in CFD 598, Reflective Learning Portfolio Class. **Before taking CFD 598, you must be enrolled in or must have completed CFD Enroll in CFD 598 a semester before you graduate. **If, for some reason, you do not pass CFD 598, you will have the opportunity to repeat the course during your last semester 6. In CFD 598, a faculty mentor will guide and assist you in the development and creation of your portfolio. 4

8 7 Portfolio Signature Assignments The 7 mandatory signature assignments include: The Early Childhood Integrated Unit Plan from CFD 275. (**If you did not take CFD 275 at SDSU, you must select another assignment from other CFD classes.) The Child Case Study from CFD 375A. The Practicum Summative Evaluations from CFD 378A, CFD 378B, CFD 378C, or CFD 378D. (**Make sure to save both the mid-semester evaluation and the final evaluation. You must earn a passing score on your final evaluation in order to pass these lab classes.) The Analysis of Student Learning: Teacher Work sample from CFD 380. (**If you will not take CFD 380, you and your faculty mentor will select an alternative assignment.) 7

9 8 The Classroom Design and Primary and Secondary Support Plan from CFD 475. The family Involvement Plan from CFD 477. (**If you will not take CFD 477, you and your faculty mentor will select an alternative assignment.) A videotaped lesson plan. **If you are not taking one of the optional classes listed above, assignment selection will be made with the guidance of your CFD 598 faculty mentor. Make sure to save all your upper division CFD assignments. This will allow you and your faculty mentor to select from several artifacts. 8

10 9 Saving Your Signature Assignments Assignments you should be saving: 1. Mandatory Signature Assignments 2. All other Assignments. *Remember, if you did not take CFD 275 at SDSU and/or you will not take CFD 380 and CFD 477, you must replace those assignments with coursework from other classes. **Saving all your assignments will ensure that you and your faculty mentor have a variety of artifacts from which to choose. 9

11 10 Saving Your Signature Assignments You are responsible for saving your assignments! Your professors will not save your assignments for you. Store the original documents in a safe place, such as on your computer, and on a back-up device. 10

12 11 Losing Your Artifacts What if I lose, misplace, or delete an assignment? 1. You will have to rewrite the missing assignments. 2. The assignments will then be re-graded by your professors, at their convenience. 3. If you lose the Practicum Summative Evaluation from your CFD 378 lab class, you will have to go back to your internship supervisor and have him or her re-write the evaluation. (**This is not always possible as supervisors may change positions within the field.) 11

13 12 Videotaped Lesson Plan Your portfolio will include a videotape of a lesson plan you design and implement while at SDSU. The lesson plan may come from several classes. These include: CFD 275 CFD 378A CFD 378B CFD 378C CFD 378D CFD 380 CFD 578 CFD 597 CFD 499 (in which you assist with faculty research) You may include a lesson plan you conducted while studying abroad or at your place of employment. If you do not design a lesson plan while at SDSU or at your place of employment, you will coordinate with your CFD 597 course instructor to videotape another activity. Your video should be 15 minutes in length. 12

14 13 Professional and Personal Reflection The Professional & Personal Reflection is a very important part of your portfolio. Once you are enrolled in CFD 598, the course syllabus will include detailed instructions on the following threepart Reflection: to 12 page paper -Focusing on your learning, as well as your professional and personal growth. 2. Dispositions survey- Will be completed by your CFD 597 internship supervisor or other fieldwork supervisor. 3. Analysis of the videotaped lesson plan, and Professional Development Plan. ** Please note that your portfolio must be well-written, following the APA style of writing. You will earn no credit in CFD 598 for poorly written papers. 13

15 14 The Competency Standards Based on three main professional organizations The contents of your portfolio will provide evidence that you have achieved goals and learning outcomes based on the competency standards of our field s three main professional organizations: National Association for the Education of Young Children National Council on Family Relations National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education 14

16 15 The 7 Competency Standards Which your portfolio is organized around Student knows and understands typical and atypical development characteristics and needs across the lifespan (NAEYC S1; NCATE S1; NCFR Area 3) Student knows and understands family dynamics and interaction across the lifespan (NAEYC S2; NCATE S1; NCFR Areas 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7) Student uses his/her understanding of and relationships with children and families to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive learning and development for all children and families (NAEYC S4; NCATE S3; NCFR Area 10) 15

17 16 Student possesses high-level communication skills (NAEYC S5; NCATE S1; NCFR Area 9) Students demonstrates a high level of cultural competence (NAEYC S2; NCATE S4; NCFR Areas 1 & 9) Student identifies and conducts him/herself as a member of the child and family profession (NAEYC S5; NCATE S1; NCFR Areas 8 & 9) Student demonstrates in-depth, critical knowledge of theory relevant to the child and family development profession (NAEYC S3 & S4; NCATE S1; NCFR Area 3) 16

18 17 Portfolio Defense CFD 598 will be finalized with your Portfolio Defense, which is a presentation to faculty and peers. During your defense, you will reflect on your learning and experiences, as well as professional and personal growth. The defense will include: 15-minute presentation 15-minute question/answer period. 17

19 18 Portfolio Grading Standards Level 4 (400 pts): Clear, convincing, consistent evidence the student is competent in the seven competencies. Level 3 (300 pts): Clear evidence the student is competent in the seven competencies. Level 2 (200 pts): limited evidence the student is competent in the seven competencies Level 1 (100 pts): Little or no evidence the student is competent in the seven competencies 18

20 19 Portfolio Grading Standards You will earn credit or no credit in CFD 598. A letter grade will not be assigned. To earn credit in CFD 598, your portfolio must be graded as a level three or higher. At a level three you will provide clear evidence that you are knowledgeable in the seven competencies of NAEYC, NCFR, and NCATE. If your portfolio is evaluated as being less than level three, you must repeat the course the following semester. You cannot graduate without passing this class. 19

21 20 Agreement Form Now sign and print the agreement form. Make sure to print enough copies for each of your upper division CFD professors and to keep at least one in your records. The Agreement Form can be found here: 20
