Family Values Scheme What is Trust? Of all the Family Values, Trust is one of the most important Inside Family Gathering Family Essentials Family Activities Family Reflections Instructions Resources because it s what all good family relationships are based on. To trust each other, you need to be honest and not hold any secrets. Good family relationships are like building a house without the foundations of trust and honesty being laid first, the walls and roof will not stay up but will come crashing down. Learning to trust each other gives everyone confidence to achieve success in everything they do. Work together this month to earn each other s trust and you will all reap the benefits. : 1. Read the safety guidelines in the Instructions section 2.Tick the tasks you complete and collect evidence 3. Complete the S.T.A.R family evaluation to qualify 4. Share your successes on nsmtc.co.uk

Family Gathering Get started this month by holding a family meeting with as many family members as you can. You can meet around a table in the house or why not be creative and make use of the outdoors? Set a date and time to hold the meeting, select a family leader to chair it and then follow the steps below to get yourself started on this month s Family Value. There are three discussion activities and against each one there is a yellow star. Together, aim to colour in all the stars before you start this month s Family Value Tasks. Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. Benjamin Spock Read together the 'What is Trust?' section on the front page of the pack and discuss what this value means to you as a family. Using a large sheet of paper, write the value Trust in the centre and write down everyone's responses. Pair together any answers that are related to each other. Use a dictionary if necessary to make sure that everyone understands what it means. Together, discuss all the trustworthy qualities each family member has. Make a list! Why do you trust each member of your family? What does each member of your family do for you to trust them? How would it make you feel if you didn t trust someone? Discuss The Value! together.

Family Gathering Without trust, words become the hollow sound of a wooden gong. With trust, words become life itself. Now you are ready to decide on what your family goals are for this month. Together, answer the following questions: What do you want to achieve on your own? What do you want to achieve as a family? Complete the 'Family Goals' page (at the back of the pack) and put it where everyone can see it. Keep reminding yourselves throughout the month what you want to achieve and be determined to find the time to do it! Think about how you will all feel when you have achieved what you set out to do! John Harold When you have completed the Family Gathering activities, colour in the stars and get ready to have some family fun! Your Evidence!

Family Essentials Family Essentials Routine family tasks are the core principles of 'Family Essentials. It is these basic essentials that will help to strengthen family relationships! Family Essentials is a really easy way to achieve points for your Family Values award. The more tasks you complete, the more award points you earn as a family. Walk to School Days Why not leave the car at home one day and walk to school? It s a great way to see the outdoors and keep fit at the same time. Why not join in with your school s walk-to-school campaign? The more days that you walk to school, the more Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible. Cherie-Carter Scotts points you will earn. Time 4 School Can you get to school on time? How can you achieve this? Plan and prepare the night before to make your mornings go with a swing! If getting up is a struggle, put your clock forward by ten minutes - this is a great trick that really works. To Help Out!

Family Essentials To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved. George MacDonald Family Meals Plan to eat a family meal together. Laying the table, serving and washing up are all part of having a family meal together. How many family meals can you do? Lets Clean-Up Housework is never a chore if all the family gets in on the act. Make a list of all the housework to be done during the week and divide it up between all your family. Dusting, hoovering, washing, ironing, cleaning are essential for a clean home! Family Learning Is completing homework a chore? Why not work together to find out something new? Visiting the local library or researching on the internet are great ways of doing this. Completing homework can be fun! Encourage each other to learn something new. Your Value!

Family Activities TIPS Picture Time Decide on a picture you would like to draw as a family. Fold a piece of paper into as many sections as there are family members. Each family member draws their part of the drawing in their section. Pass it to the next person until your whole picture is complete. Items required: felt tips, crayons, pencils, paper. Face Painting Each family member take turns painting the face of another family member. Items required: face paints. What s Your Secret? Each family member writes their own secret on a piece of paper and seals it in an envelope. Give the envelope to another family member to look after for a week. Items required: paper, pens, envelopes. Gain someone s trust by using the 3 A s: Acknowledge, what you have done remember, no one is perfect and we all make mistakes. Apologise - it takes a big person to admit they are wrong. Act - do something positive to earn someone s trust and show them that you mean it. Involve Everyone!

Family Activities Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. Benjamin Spock Food Tasting Organise a selection of different foods. Take it in turns to be blind-folded and given an item of food to taste. Are you trusting enough to eat something you can t see? Items required: a selection of foods, a blindfold. Blindfolded Obstacle Course Set out an obstacle course in your garden or in a large space in your home. One person is blindfolded and guided by instructions from another. Each family member should have a turn at giving the instructions and being blindfolded. You can change the course slightly each time someone has a turn. Items required: blindfold, items from your home to act as obstacles. Walk the Walk This activity is done in pairs. One person puts their finger on the top of a small ball and one on the bottom of the ball. Take care as you walk across the room holding your ball. Have Fun! Trust in your partner to complete this game. Take turns so each family member is paired with everyone else.

Family Activities Get the Empty Glass Make a square out of as many cups/glasses as you choose. Fill all of the glasses with water except one. One family member is blindfolded and must follow the instructions of someone else to get to the empty glass. Take turns to give the directions and be blindfolded. Will you trust the instructions given to you to find the empty glass? Items required empty cups/glasses, water, blindfold. Trust Scrap-book Put together a scrapbook of occasions when trust has been important in your family. You can write, or draw a picture about a time when you trusted a family member with something important to you. Keep all the entries in your scrapbook. The key is to get to know people and trust them to be who they are. Instead, we trust people to be who we want them to beand when they're not, we cry. Anonymous Hold Your Nose! Cut a cube of apple and a cube of potato. Hold your nose and taste the food. Can you guess what you ve just eaten? By holding your nose, it is trickier for your senses to tell you what you ve just tasted. Do you trust your senses? Your Goals!

Family Activities Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement. Golda Meir Character Picture Each family member draws the head of their character and then gives it to the person on their left. That person draws the body of the character. Keep moving your character along until each family member has drawn something on the character. Do you trust your family to finish the picture you started? Items required: paper, pens. Communication Box Everyone helps to decorate the box. Place it where everyone can access it. If there is something any family member wants to discuss, they can write it down and place it in the box. Check the box regularly. When something is put in the box, have a family discussion about whatever topic is written down. Walk the Walk This activity is done in pairs. One person puts their finger on the top of a small ball and one on the bottom of the ball. The Value! Take care as you walk across the room holding your ball. Trust in your partner to complete this game. Take turns so each family member is paired with everyone else.
