A la carte items are not included with this analysis, but most a la carte items have ingredient listings directly on the package label. Sometimes two brands are listed for one food item, and this is due to a product change that occurred during the bid process. We list both brands because we may still have product in inventory that we need to use first. Usually, the second item listed will be the product we will use for the remaining of the school year. This ingredient document is prepared manually because our products change frequently due to the bidding process. Although we ask for specific ingredient information, for each food item specified on our bids and our approval is required before a substitution is made, history has shown this is not always the case. In addition, manufacturers sometimes change product formulas. We want you to be aware that our ingredient data cannot be 100 percent accurate. The most frequent allergy inquiries deal with peanuts or nuts and we limit these on our menus. Most manufacturers of our purchased products use soybean or cottonseed oil for processing. Also, increasingly, manufacturers are stating on the label that even though their product does not contain peanuts, they want you to be aware that their products are produced in a facility that handles peanut butter/peanut products. If they stated this on the label, we stated it in this analysis. The following are our products containing peanuts: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (Smuckers Uncrustable) Linden s Brownies states peanut and walnuts are ingredients. This product is only offered in the high schools. Snickers ice cream bars contains peanuts and they are offered only in the middle and high schools. United States Department of Agriculture occasionally gives us commodity nuts such as walnuts or trail mix. If we use these items in chef salads a large pink label stating Contains Walnuts is used for the student s information.
