Who we are
What we do We are responsible for the following activity: Supply of services to production Fire detection and site sprinkler coverage Non process project responsibility
Steam 22 bar, 16 bar & 8 bar Compressed air 8 & 16 bar 100 bar Hydraulics 20 bar Hydraulics 304 Hydraulics 404 Hydraulics Process Hot Water Cooling water Electrical Distribution Chilled water Vacuum Space heating Solvent Services to Production
History Lesson Following the industrial revolution steam usage became common place. Boiler explosions were almost a daily event 1854 Manchester Steam Users Association formed Aim was to reduce the number of explosions by examination Reduction was dramatic, only 8 out of 11,000 examined boilers exploded This success led to the Boiler Explosions Act 1882 Legislation remained limited to steam boilers, receivers and air receivers. Until.
History Lesson 28 Killed and 89 Injured
Development Of Legislation 1977 First consultative document too wide ranging 1984 Second try Formed the basis of the current regulations 1989 Pressure Systems & Transportable Gas Container Regulations are introduced 2000 Pressure Systems Safety Regulations revised and updated

PSSR Goal setting legislation Aim is to prevent serious injury from the hazard of stored energy as a result of failure of a pressure system or one of its component parts Systems containing: - Steam at any pressure - Gas > 0.5 barg ( 7.5psig ) Written Scheme Of Examination - What needs to be examined - How it should be prepared & examined - How often it needs to be examined
Pressure System One or more pressure vessels - Rigid construction - Protective devices --Pipework Pipework attached to transportable pressure receptacle Pipeline and its protective devices
PSSR at Michelin Ballymena Our insurance company is Allianz and we work closely with the insurance inspectors. Our systems are divided into a number of Written Schemes * Factory Steam * Bld 5 Steam * Compressed Air 16 bar * Compressed Air 9 bar * Hydraulic System * Chiller Plant All items on the scheme are given a unique ID number eg BAL 001.
PSSR at Michelin Ballymena All items that require inspection are held on a data base This database holds info on each item such as serial number, system type and pressure, location in the factory and the last / next inspection date. Each engineering department is responsible for the items in its own area and has its own written schemes where required Before the due date the Insurance Inspector is contacted and a mutual time agreed for the inspection. The equipment is then taken out of service and made ready.
Two Part Inspection During part 1 the inspector physically examines all the component parts of the system including the safety devices. He is looking for corrosion, fatigue, creep etc. and if necessary will use ultrasonic / magnetic NDT tests to determine condition of vessels & pipework. On completion of the part 1 checks a certificate will be issued detailing any repair work necessary or allowing the system to be made ready for part 2. During part 2 the system is put back to normal working pressure and then the inspector must witness operation of the safety devices eg. PRV s and cut-outs. When the inspector is satisfied he will issue a new insurance certificate and the item can be put back into service. The database is then updated and new due date automatically created.
