1 SUPPORTER NEWS HOW YOU HELP SAVE LIVES ISSUE 45 AUGUST 2013 GOUGED SWIMMER FOREVER GRATEFUL Catherine gives you a personal account of how your donations provided life-saving care and an urgent flight to hospital when she was on death s door. I sustained life-threatening injuries when both my legs were caught in a boat propeller while swimming in Marlborough Sounds. I lost a lot of blood and by the time I reached the shore I was fading in and out of consciousness. A Picton ambulance crew administered life-saving first aid, but I required an urgent helicopter transfer to Wellington Hospital. The Life Flight team arrived in no time in their Westpac Rescue Helicopter! The rescue team was great, they were very capable and without their immediate treatment at the scene I would have died. The pilot indicated it would only take 13 minutes to get to Wellington, which was a huge relief as my condition was very serious. Two years later I have made a great recovery. I am forever grateful to Life Flight and the Picton ambulance team. WITHOUT LIFE FLIGHT'S IMMEDIATE TREATMENT AT THE SCENE I WOULD HAVE DIED. 1. WE WERE TOLD I D BE FLOWN TO WELLINGTON HOSPITAL WITHIN THE HOUR. I FELT LIKE MY WORLD WAS TIPPED UPSIDE DOWN AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING Jack in intensive care, born weighing only 1000 grams. 2. On Christmas Eve, after much intensive care, his journey home begins as he is carefully loaded into the Life Flight air ambulance. 3. 3 PAGE 3 FROM THE CHAIR Life Flight Future The Board has recently completed the Life Flight strategic plan for the next ten years. I am very pleased to assure our friends and the community that the plans we are putting in place will continue our commitment to the ideals of our founder Peter Button and build further on our strong history of saving lives. FROM THE CEO One of the things that make aircraft very expensive to operate is the limited life span of the thousands of components which help keep the aircraft in the air. When our helicopter reached 5000 flying hours the transmission had to be removed and completely overhauled. The response to our helicopter transmission appeal has been sensational. The mail has flooded in to help us raise the $250,000 needed. This record breaking response has enabled the transmission to be completely overhauled. I send a huge thank you to each and every one of you who made this possible. With the support of the community, Life Flight will continue to make a difference to families in our region. Our plans also consider the replacement costs for significant capital items such as a replacement rescue helicopter and provide future proofing for those eventualities. In the meantime, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing generosity and commitment to maintaining emergency air services in our region. The Westpac Chopper Appeal aims to raise funds and awareness of rescue helicopter services around the country. 6 PAGE 6 THE DAY THE CHOPPER SAVED MY LIFE Robin Field spent his birthday tumbling downhill in a bulldozer, fearing for his life. While operating in a remote part of the Wairarapa a bank disintegrated beneath Robin, sending his bulldozer careering end-over-end 200 metres down a hill. He suffered five broken ribs, a fractured skull and cuts and bruises to his entire body. Due to the isolated location and steep hills, local emergency services were unable to reach him. Thankfully your kind donations meant the Life Flight team could mount an air rescue in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Robin says, The sound of the approaching helicopter was unforgettable, I knew it was bringing everything I needed to survive. After emergency treatment on the scene and a week of intensive care he is at home recovering slowly. Your service brought an end to my pain and worrying, thank you for being there.
