9 Statement of Affiliated Council s Purpose and Goals Mission: The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Fellowship Strategic Priorities : Priority 1 Mission Alignment Community colleges must continually adapt, respond, and create new strategies to enable their colleges to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Today s community colleges serve students in a diverse range of education programs leading to associate, certificate, and a growing number of baccalaureate and competencybased degrees. As the honor society representing two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa must make certain its mission aligns with the community college mission and its membership reflects, in all ways, the diversity of the community college student body. Priority 2 Membership Development Recognition of academic achievement is core to the Society mission. To remain competitive, the Society must leverage new and existing technologies to generate lasting change for improving the membership acceptance experience. Research also confirms that one size does not fit all, and by providing additional tools and resources to advisors and students, we will expand ways to accept membership into Phi Theta Kappa. Priority 3 Program Sustainability Achieving sustainability is highly dependent on the ability to develop, mature, and cycle out programs to be responsive to constituent needs over time. Phi Theta Kappa programming includes Honors in Action, College Project, Hallmark Awards, Five Star Chapter Plan, Leadership Development Program, Competitive Edge, CollegeFish.org, International Society of Baccalaureate Scholars, and Scholarships. Very important initiatives such as the Community College Completion Corps (C4) also play an increasingly vital role in supporting the Society mission and connectivity of Phi Theta Kappa to the community college mission. Priority 4 Relationship Building The success of Phi Theta Kappa brings many tangible and intangible benefits to the communities of our nation s two-year colleges. Our efforts must go beyond increasing awareness of Phi Theta Kappa to soliciting actions that institutionalize the Society and build a college community around the organization.
10 Affiliated Council Program Activities for the Current Year July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015 For the first time in the history of the Society, we were able to use data to prove the Society s impact on student success. By tracking the completion and transfer success of 14,638 Phi Theta Kappa members, we determined an overall student success rate of 91%. This means that a Phi Theta Kappa student is four times more likely to graduate than a community college student and nearly twice as likely to graduate when compared to other student with GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Using the completion study data, Phi Theta Kappa initiated a call to action to advisors, college presidents, and administrators. We asked that they 1) make all faculty aware of the success of Phi Theta Kappa members; 2) increase the number of advisors dedicated to chapter activities; and 3) increase or maintain budget support for chapter operational activities. The goal of our research was to strengthen our chapters and help the college community understand the value of membership. In doing so, we established a direct link between the mission of Phi Theta Kappa and the mission of the community college to demonstrate that Phi Theta Kappa is a necessary partner in student completion. In addition, the Board of Directors updated the Society s Bylaws to be more inclusive of all schools that offer two-year degrees to make certain that chapters can continue to thrive and grow within all colleges that have expanded their mission by offering four-year degrees. Affiliated Council Program Activities for Next Year July 1, 2015-June 30, 2016 Phi Theta Kappa is set to unveil a new Society Management System along with its new website in July The new system will fully integrate technology services for ptk.org, membership management, the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, and the Phi Theta Kappa Store. The project has taken one and a half years to complete, and the goal of the new system is to enhance the experience of the Society s constituents. In the coming year, Phi Theta Kappa will hold the following events, meetings, and conferences: Advisor Institutes Equips new and seasoned advisors with tools and techniques to help advisors and their colleges reap the benefits of a fully engaged Phi Theta Kappa chapter. o September 11-12, 2015 in Philadelphia, PA o September 18-20, 2015 in Oxford, MS
11 Phi Theta Kappa Awareness Week A grassroots initiative to mobilize members and chapters in sharing the message of how Phi Theta Kappa is changing lives. o September 14-18, 2015 Phi Theta Kappa s Annual Convention NerdNation NerdNation provides opportunities for advisor and student engagement that result in long-term chapter and student success. The three-day agenda combines: educational sessions to foster personal and chapter development; training to cultivate leaders; thought-provoking speakers who broaden attendees perspectives; networking opportunities to share ideas and expand ones pool of resources; and awards presentations recognizing past achievements of students, advisors, college administrators and presidents, while setting the bar high for future success. o April 7-9, 2016 at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD Honors Institute Often referred to as the crown jewel in honors programming, Phi Theta Kappa s Honors Institute is an intensive weeklong exploration of Phi Theta Kappa s Honors Study Topic. Features of the event include internationally recognized speakers, small group seminars, educational field trips, and experiential activities. o June 20-25, 2016 at Wake Forest University in Salem, NC Leadership Instructor Certifications The W.K. Kellogg Foundation recognized Phi Theta Kappa s Leadership Development Studies curriculum as one of only eight Exemplary Leadership Development Programs in Higher Education. The Instructor Certification Seminars is an intensive, interactive experience during which International Facilitators present course materials to demonstrate and explore Phi Theta Kappa s unique approach to leadership development. The foundation of the curriculum is the observation and study of great leaders portrayed in the Humanities. Certification is a pre-requisite for anyone who desires to facilitate leadership development using the Phi Theta Kappa curriculum. o July 14-17, 2016 at the Kellogg West Conference Center in Pomona, CA o July 21-24, 2016 at the Knight Conference Center at Washington University in St. Louis, MO o July 28-31, 2016 at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta, GA
