1 JOB DESCRIPTION AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT (AIIS) JOB TITLE: Multimedia Officer TEAM: AV Studio PROGRAMME: Global Content DIRECTORATE: Campaign and Communications JOB PURPOSE: Works alongside the Executive Producer with specific responsibility for coordinating enquiries and providing advice relating to audio, video and multimedia material requested at or from the IS for the movement s use in its human rights work. He/She will manage Amnesty International s still image, audio, video and multimedia assets and coordinate requests for English and non-english language AV content from the movement. The Multimedia Officer will process, develop and produce multimedia audiovisual materials for use in AI work, including coordinating internal AV requests like recordings of AI meetings, events and visitors. TEAM PURPOSE: The AV studio produces, commissions, procures and distributes timely and relevant AV content that creates impact for human rights change. It provides core AV services for the International Secretariat and the wider Amnesty movement, including: commissioning high-impact AV materials to support AI s campaigning, activism, brand awareness, fundraising and human rights education goals producing original factual content for use on news outlets and social media sites coordinating AV work across the global movement, commissioning and managing content produced in hubs, national offices and Sections, providing advice on rights management, commissioning and co-production; technical issues, formats, equipment; and on processes for working with third parties (filmmakers, photographers, talent, artists, performers etc.) undertaking picture research, sourcing, commissioning and negotiating rights to acquire and use still images for AI s outputs and campaigns managing and developing Amnesty Digital Asset Management (ADAM) as the organization s single authoritative source and archive of AV materials providing AV guidelines and developing AV training programmes PROGRAMME PURPOSE: The Global Content Programme is the home of the International Secretariat s Design Studio, Editorial Studio and Audio Visual Studio. Its primary purpose is to be a global resource for the movement, providing and promoting engaging human rights content across all media and all platforms. It brings three specific areas of communications expertise together to: bring about human rights change by creating cross-platform, nimble, communication solutions for the organization s strategic campaign, communication and business goals support the movement s growth and impact by spear-heading a user-centred approach to content generation in the IS, as opposed to output-centred. This means integrating all content types - stills, audio, video, text into one programme and ensuring the intended audience is constantly positioned as the focal point of the Programme s output lead all communication strategies and multimedia content developed through the Creative Lab
2 work collaboratively with colleagues in regional hubs, Sections, Research, Campaigns, Law and Policy, Fundraising, Language Resources, Global Production Services and the Brand Unit, to build and maintain a truly global, multimedia Story Server for the organization develop and lead effective Content and Editorial strategies for Amnesty International, that embed Global Identity and Tone of Voice in all we produce develop user personae and supporter journeys for fundraising, activism, and all forms of audience engagement DIRECTORATE PURPOSE: Lead on global and regional campaigns Deliver integrated and effective campaign and communications strategies and services to the Amnesty movement Communicate effectively to external audiences Have top level professional expertise across all communications channels Help to grow the Amnesty movement Contribute directly to the improvement of human rights around the world AIIS PURPOSE: The International Secretariat, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the Amnesty International movement globally, fostering Amnesty International s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Reporting to: The Executive Producer Posts that this job manages: Volunteers Other key relationships: Colleagues in the Global Content Programme Studios, News colleagues and other staff in Media, colleagues in DCP and colleagues in regional hubs, including Global and Regional Campaign Managers and Content Managers (Regional), Digital Managers (Regional), Researchers, DCP staff, external partners and suppliers USEFUL INFORMATION: LOCATION: London MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain Amnesty s Digital Asset Management database (ADAM), which provides the movement with audiovisual content for use in its human rights work including but not limited to organizing and documenting AV content to agreed standards Be responsible for the physical organization and storage of AV multimedia material in the International Secretariat collection, thereby preserving assets for future use Lead on ensuring this system works in harmony with storage and publishing systems for written content produced by the Global Content Programme and other relevant parts of the movement (such as the proposed Story Server)
3 Work with the Editorial and Design Studios and Audiovisual archivist and Photo Information Officer to develop joined up system for storage, retrieval and publication of creative content across the Global Content Programme Work with design studio to develop and maintain digital image work flow, processing assets to agreed standards, so that a consistent quality of product is available and ready for use by the movement and assets are archived and preserved for future use Make audio recordings to a professional standard of Amnesty International meetings, events and visitors; the recordings should be for use in the movement s current and future human rights work In coordination with other relevant teams and external contractors, process, develop and produce multimedia audiovisual materials for use in Amnesty International work, including editing, copying, compiling, authoring, digitizing and providing video and audio transfer services used for presentation, dissemination and archiving; facilitating the creation and use of multimedia resources for use in the movement s current and future human rights work Liaise with external suppliers/contractors to ensure a timely and effective duplication and distribution service for time based AV materials Take lead responsibility in supplying audio equipment, training and digitization services to International Secretariat staff; facilitating the creation and use of audio resources for research use by the movement Advise International Secretariat staff and Amnesty International sections on copyright; copyright negotiation; video, audio and multimedia management; video, audio and multimedia policy; recording technicalities and digitization services Research, obtain and negotiate usage agreements for audiovisual materials for a diverse range of audiences for use by the movement in human rights work Contribute to the AV Studio s video, audio and multimedia ethical and professional guidelines, to ensure the movement s work with audio, video and multimedia material is effective, responsible and professional Take lead responsibility for sourcing and negotiating use of non-ai, video and multimedia materials and distributing them to users to support the organization s actions, campaigns, events and publications Take lead responsibility on processing (e.g. translation, dubbing, subtitling) of video and multimedia products for wider use by the Amnesty movement to support its campaigns and actions WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB? Amnesty International sections and staff have an easily accessible choice of good AV multimedia materials to use for campaigning work AV multimedia material isn t used inappropriately or where the use would endanger the subject of the audiovisual material Audio, video and multimedia material isn t manipulated in any way that would harm Amnesty International s reputation Amnesty s AV multimedia content is effectively catalogued and accessible for access and preservation Planning and implementation of audiovisual work is undertaken to agreed deadlines and budgets Amnesty International sections increasingly use and request audiovisual products that promote Amnesty International global identity and messaging International Secretariat staff can obtain professional quality audio recordings of events and
4 visitors SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Experience of working with and for different audiences, and in managing user-focused materials Excellent communication skills particularly with colleagues and in areas that may need negotiation or diplomacy; experience of collaborative working Ability to work to tight deadlines under pressure Proven experience of working with a video or audio archive system, within a professional environment, and of using audio recording equipment, digital video and other DV formats, making audio recordings; process the results to a professional standard and copying, storing and converting time-based AV materials Understanding of the importance of AV materials helping to fulfil and promote an organization s Global Identity and messaging Experience of providing a service and information to users and identifying a user s needs, and of providing advice and instruction to non-technical users Experience at all stages of audio and video workflow and a high level of understanding of linear and non-linear editing systems, including specific applications such as Adobe Audition and Adobe Premier Ability to edit audio and visual material, including for use on the internet, and knowledge and proven experience of web video streaming media and appropriate file conversion software such as Digital Rapids; awareness of traditional and new media, in particular developments in online delivery of AV content Experience and understanding of copyright issues and of working with confidential information Ability to contribute to strategic thinking and planning for audiovisual material Understanding of the role of an asset management system for an international organization and experience of cataloguing and managing systems, particularly for audio and video metadata, to industry standard Experience of using and negotiating with outside services and suppliers Willingness and ability to work to agreed (professional and team) standards and procedures along with the ability to use judgment/initiative when required Ability to contribute to the development and implementation of standards Willingness to participate in developing and implementing audiovisual training programs Ability to deal sensitively and ethically on human rights issues in the context of audiovisual production work Ability to maintain a flexible approach to changing priorities in a high pressure environment Willingness to work within participatory methodologies and approaches Language: Fluent in written and spoken English; working knowledge of other languages including Arabic, French or Spanish is highly desirable HOW YOU WORK - COMPETENCIES: Competency: Level: (A, B or C) Delivering Results: B Working with others: C
