1 Introduction The Radiology Internship is designed to provide one year of post-dvm training in diagnostic imaging. The training program will utilize faculty of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and other participating departments as mentors. Clinical facilities of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics (VTH&C) will be the primary training location. 2 Objectives 2.1 Become knowledgeable with equipment, radiographic positioning and technique in small and large animal and routine abdominal ultrasound procedures in small animal. 2.2 Review and learn anatomy with an emphasis on radiographic anatomy. Get acquainted with the correct terminology used in the dictation for radiographic studies. 2.3 Prepare the intern for after hour s emergency duty. Allow the intern to develop confidence in diagnostic radiology in an emergency setting. 2.4 Perform and interpret ultrasonographic examinations on small and large animals. 2.5 Learn the basics of nuclear medicine and computed tomography. 2.6 Develop basic teaching skills 2.7 Provide teaching training and experience. 2.8 Prepare the intern for residency training and/or graduate study or entry into a high quality small or large animal practice. 3 Prerequisites 3.1 Candidates must have a DVM or an equivalent degree. 3.2 Candidates must have fulfilled a rotating internship or private practice equivalent. 3.3 Candidates should have successfully completed the National Board examination or its equivalent and a State Board examination or its equivalent. 4 House Officer Rounds And Seminar Program 4.1 The House Officer Rounds are designed to provide the intern an opportunity to receive and present interesting, unusual, or difficult clinical case material utilizing a problem oriented approach to professional colleagues and to develop manuscripts for publication. The intern will participate with other VCS house officers on a rotating basis and will make at least 1 case presentation in House Officer Rounds during the year. 4.2 The House Officer Seminar series is designed to provide the intern with the opportunity to research and present scientific material to professional colleagues. One seminar will be presented during the year. The seminar will include a written manuscript with references in a form suitable for a publication. 4.3 A SVM faculty member(s) will be selected by the intern to mentor both case presentations and seminar preparation. Manuscripts submitted for publication will be reviewed, revised and coauthored by a SVM faculty member(s). 4.4 The intern is required to attend and participate in the following VCS 7001: VCS Seminar Grand Rounds

House Officer Rounds Other seminars/rounds which are requirements of the intern s current rotation VCS HO Rounds/Seminar Policy HO attendance at all HO Rounds/Seminar sessions is required. HO attendance is required at only those rounds and seminars designated as VCS HO Rounds/Seminar sessions and that others occurring in the same time slot are not required by the House Officer Committee Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session HO will be required to present an additional seminar if they have more than one unexcused absence during the program year All absences must be accounted for by completing a HO Leave Request Form and submitting it to the HOC chair Excused absences include the following: illness, annual leave, attendance or participation in a continuing education program, presentation of a student lecture, scheduled out-rotation or special service requirements per request of advisor. All other absences are unexcused unless deemed excusable by the HO advisor. 5 Clinical Program 5.1 Clinical Agenda July 1 through September 1 During the first two months of the program, the intern will observe how the section operates and is expected to primarily assist the technicians in making proper radiographs and in approving the quality of the films made. The intern is also expected to assist with the ultrasound exams and special procedures. As experience is gained in this regard, the radiologists will rely heavily on the intern for quality control, small animal abdominal ultrasound, case management and communication with the clinicians and residents of other sections. The intern will be directly supervised by the radiologist on duty September 1 through January 1 The intern will be responsible for management of routine radiology, ultrasound examinations and special procedures under the radiologist s supervision. The intern will continue to work with the technicians in performing and approving radiographs. The intern will start dictating draft reports for the studies (diagnostic and contrast radiography and ultrasonography) performed that day on a daily basis, under the radiologist s direct supervision. The intern will begin to dictate reports one day a week. As the intern s ability increases he/she will assume more of the dictation duties. All reports are reviewed orally in daily rounds and corrected by the radiologist. The intern will also share night and weekend radiology emergency duty. A radiologist will also serve as secondary backup when the intern is on duty.

5.1.3 January 1 through June 30 - In addition to diagnostic radiology, the intern is assigned to an increasing commitment in diagnostic ultrasonography and will be heavily involved in quality control. The intern will begin assisting in nuclear medicine and attending CT examinations. 5.2 Elective rotations The radiology intern will have the opportunity to rotate through three half blocks in one of the following if available: Anesthesia, Oncology, Companion Animal Medicine (CAM), Large Animal Medicine, Companion Animal Surgery (CAS), Large Animal Surgery, Bird, Zoo and Exotic Animal Medicine (BZEM) or Pathology. 5.3 Clinical Rounds The intern will attend the 4 th year student diagnostic imaging rounds daily, both morning and afternoon The intern will attend scheduled House Officer seminars regularly and present one seminar during the program (outlined in section 4) The intern is encouraged to attend Clinical Anatomy laboratories, and will attend all the didactic lectures and assist with laboratories in: Diagnostic Imaging As time permits, the intern may participate in Medicine, Surgery, Pathology and Zoo/Exotic animal rounds when topics are pertinent to diagnostic imaging Attendance at Grand rounds is required The intern will present radiology Journal Club papers on a weekly basis The intern will present imaging book review rounds on a weekly basis Bi-weekly, the intern will review and discuss known case interpretations involving scheduled topics (including artifacts) provided by the radiologist.

5.4 Emergency Duty The Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics operates year round and will be compensated financially according to the hospital policy. The radiology intern will share emergency duty rotation with the radiologists. The rotation will commit the intern to a share of evening, weekend and holiday duty on a scheduled basis. The intern will be available at all times during the assigned period. 6 Teaching Program 6.1 Throughout the program, interns will be viewed as role models by professional students. The interns will participate in clinical instruction and in the evaluation of Phase II veterinary students. 7 Performance Evaluation 7.1 The radiology intern will receive a Performance Evaluation quarterly from the program supervisor in radiology. 7.2 The intern will receive a Performance Evaluation at the end of each rotation (1/2 block) to document his/her performance during the program. 7.3 The intern will meet with the Intern Director every quarter to discuss such evaluations and the intern s progress through the program. 7.4 The House Officer Committee will review the block evaluations and has the capability to recommend continuation, probation or termination of the program at any time based on these evaluations. 7.5 The House Officer Committee will meet in March of each year to determine if the candidate has successfully completed the intern program. This determination will be based on all evaluations for the candidate that had been submitted to the House Officer Committee to this time. 8 House Officer Committee The committee is comprised of a representative of each house officer program, the VCS Department Head, and the Director of the VTH&C (ex officio). It will be responsible for year end review of the intern's progress. This review will be based on critiques from the disciplines in which the intern has rotated and block evaluations. The committee will grant an internship certificate to those interns who have successfully completed the program. In addition, interns will make a composite written evaluation of the program in the last month of their internship. This evaluation must be completed and turned in to the House Officer Committee before an internship certificate will be granted. 9 Employment and Benefits Louisiana State University classifies interns as Graduate Assistants. As such, they (and their eligible dependents) qualify for the Louisiana State University Baton Rouge Student Health Plan which provides benefits for accidents and illness. The School of Veterinary Medicine will provide malpractice insurance coverage. The salary (not a stipend) is published in the Directory

of Internships and Residencies as published by the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians ( Salary is payable in monthly increments. No social security tax is withheld. Federal and state income tax is withheld. The intern may be eligible to petition the IRS for exemption from federal tax on part of his/her salary. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics operates year round. The intern will share with other residents, faculty and interns on emergency duty rotation. The rotation will commit the intern to a share of evening, weekend and holiday duty on a scheduled basis. Although sick and annual leave time do not accrue, up to a maximum of 10 days absence will be permitted and still allow the intern to qualify for receipt of an internship certificate. Non-emergency absence(s) must be scheduled and approved 30 days in advance. They will be granted on an individual basis taking into account the reason for the requested absence and the needs of the service and hospital. A maximum of 5 of the 10 days will be granted for vacation or other personal business during the internship. A form requesting the absence must be filled out by the intern and signed by the intern s mentor, the clinician to whom the intern will be assigned during the absence, and the House Officer Committee chair before approval will be granted. Except in unusual circumstances approval will not be granted for absence during the final month of the internship. Emergency absence such as for illness or a death in the immediate family should be brought to the attention of the clinician to whom the intern is assigned as soon as the intern learns that he/she will be absent. The official form should be filled out upon the intern s return. 10 Post Internship Study If the intern is considering a residency or graduate program following completion of the internship, it is suggested that he/she consult with relevant faculty to maximize preparation for that program. 11 Application Procedures All applications and ranking will be done through the VCS office. Radiology Internships are not part of the matching program. A CV, letter of intent and two reference letters are required in order to consider the applicant. Additional inquiries specific for the program at Louisiana State University can be directed to the Head, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA

Appendix A Elective Blocks 1. The intern will spend one half-block from three of the following services: Anesthesia, Oncology, Companion Animal Medicine (CAM), Large Animal Medicine, Companion Animal Surgery (CAS), Large Animal Surgery, Bird, Zoo and Exotic Animal Medicine (BZEM) or Pathology. Rotations are dependent on availability. 2. The intern will be directly responsible to the faculty member with whom he/she is rotating on the service. 3. The intern shall be assigned responsibility by the supervising faculty member. The degree of responsibility afforded the intern will vary depending on the needs of the patient and the abilities of the intern. 4. An evaluation form (Appendix B) will be filled out by the faculty member to whom the intern has been assigned at the end of the half-block. A copy of the evaluation will be given to the intern, the intern director, the VCS department secretary, and the house officer committee.
