Neurological Services Plan Our vision... Every person in NHS Ayrshire & Arran referred with a disorder of the nervous system experiences a quality of care that gives confidence to patient, referrer and provider. Information for you Follow us on Find us on Facebook at Visit our website: All our publications are available in other formats
The vision for Neurological Services in NHS Ayrshire & Arran What is Neurology? Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. These can be: Conditions that are managed mostly in the community (such as epilepsy and migraine). Acute neurological emergencies (such as traumatic brain injury and meningitis). Chronic disabling conditions (such as Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson s). Functional neurological symptoms. Our Neurological Services strategy Our Neurological Services strategy will run from 2012 until 2017 and will address the general neurological needs of people living in Ayrshire and Arran. The strategy will focus on key groups of people, including those with specific conditions, as well as on improving general neurology services. 2
Our current service People with neurological conditions will come into contact with a wide range of clinicians, as well as a significant number of specialist neurological service practitioners. These include: Neurology consultant. Consultants in Neuro-Rehabilitation with a sub specialist interest in Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease. Consultants in Care of the Elderly Medicine with a sub specialty interest in Parkinson s. GPs with special interest in headaches. Specialist nurses in Parkinson s, adult epilepsy, paediatric epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis (and a specialist nurse in Motor Neurone Disease). Specialist Allied Health Professionals. Specialist Neuropsychologists Integrated Clinical Neuropsychology and Liaison Psychiatry services. Specialist Neurophysiologists. The majority of care for neurological conditions takes place within the community - for example, through your GP. Local authorities may assess you for social care needs, housing adaptations and provide support for your family members and carers. 3
We work in partnership with voluntary organisations such as the Ayrshire Hospice, Headway, Scottish Huntington s Association, Quarriers, MS Society, Motor Neurone Disease Scotland and Parkinson s UK. Achievements to date In the last five years there has already been significant progress made in the development of neurological services in Ayrshire and Arran. These include: Publication of a public health neurological needs assessment. Establishment of the Neurological Services Improvement Group, with participants from a NHS Ayrshire & Arran, partner agencies and the voluntary sector. Appointment of a GP with a special interest in headaches. Development of clinical pathways for a number of key conditions. Further development of the Multiple Sclerosis Managed Clinical Network to include Motor Neurone Disease and Huntington s Disease. Work to ensure that patients referred for outpatient appointments do not wait more than nine weeks. Establishment of the Neurological Patient Reference Group. 4
Priorities A list of priority areas have been identified for the strategy. These are: Providing quality information for patients to help them participate in their care. Providing quality information and training opportunities for other professionals who provide care to people with neurological conditions. Ensuring clinical standards are at their highest possible level. Ensuring services are equal, efficient and use all available support including those provided by the voluntary sector. Our challenges The increase in the proportion of older people in Ayrshire and Arran, specifically in rural areas. Increase in activity for neurology patient services, particularly a 65 per cent increase in outpatient activity. Neurological conditions that are not widely recognised by the public. These may include patients with functional neurological symptoms and those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. 5
