2 11. Camping Kit Tent Sleeping Mat Sleeping Bag Torch Personal Hygiene Medication Towel Footwear Casual clothing Luggage Suitcase/Bag/etc School provides But you can bring your own. Air Mattresses are supper comfortable. Closed foam roll mattress are better than nothing! 3 season (-10 comfort) is what I would recommend. Definitely not a caravan type sleeping bag. LED Head torches are great. Long battery life, usually about a week of 24/7 use! Keeps you hands free to do any work & small to. Energizer Advanced Headlight, are quite cheap. Petzel make high quality expensive beasts! Equipment to ensure dental & personal hygiene is maintained. A shower each night is nice! Anything you need. It s a good idea to let Keri or myself know if you are on any prescription drugs. Thanks! Camping towels dry quickly, although they are a little frustrating to use! For the campsite/pub/ferry etc. Something other than your walking footwear is nice! Remember the grass will be wet in the mornings & evenings! Something to wear in the evenings will be nice. Remember it gets cold at night. The warmer the day, the colder the night! You need to transport your kit on the school minibus roof! Then by hand to the ferry, then by tractor to the campsite! Label all luggage "Garrison Holidays" I ll provide a laminated label for your luggage Cooking / Eating Kit Bowl Mug Spoon Sharp Knife Cooker Pans etc Gas I ll bring some large ones! 3 Walking Kit Item Quantity Comments Food Rucksack Sat. There is a café on the ferry selling light snacks. I d suggest you take a Packed Breakfast/Lunch for Sat. & nibbles to take you through to lunchtime, which will be the first meal we will provide. Breakfast Porridge & Bacon rolls. Lunch Dinner Snacks We will provide food for you to make a packed lunch. A substantial meal each night. They are important when out walking all day. We will provide lots of nibbles for you to take with you. 1 Day sack, to hold your waterproofs, lunch & a jumper. A good heavyweight waterproof bag to put anything you don t want to get wet in, inside your rucksack. Must have 2 shoulder straps. Water bottle 1 1lt water bottle of some description or a flask. Flask First Aid Kit Mobile Phone Camera SILVA compass 1 1:25000 Map 1 None essential but nice to have a warm brew. However if we can find a café/pub at lunchtime we will make use of it! You will have to purchase your own drinks/nibbles though. Useful but not essential. Blister plasters are expensive, but you should all have a pack of large plasters, they are about 5 for 5. Good footwear & socks will avoid you having to use them, hopefully! Gaffa Tape is awesome! (just 30cm, not a role!) 1 Useful but not essential. How will you charge it? iphone users beware! You want to record your memories! Batteries! Only Silva compasses are worth buying! (please don t buy anything else!) Ranger 3 or Expedition 4 are the models worth owning. You don t have to have one, but navigation without one is challenging! 1 Must cover complete area you are walking in. 3of 4

4 Walking Clothing Walking Socks Underwear Base layer 2 Shirt 2 Trousers 3pairs High quality walking socks are essential. see handout on FEET 3 sets Sports type, supportive, wicking. 2 pair Fleece Jacket or jersey 2 Waterproof Jacket Waterproof Trousers 1 1 Warm headgear 1 T-shirt or vest! Wicking type preferred; Cotton T-shirt is not suitable for base layer. Long sleeved, with a collar to protect the back of you neck are good. Thin fleece s work well Which split to make shorts are useful. Definitely not jeans or other cotton based trousers or tracksuit bottoms. Ideally robust and wind proof. X-Army style light-weight green trousers are fine. 2 lighter jerseys or "fleece jacket". They don t need to be anything fancy a 5 thick fleece from Tesco s is fine. Breathable, please (we are not in the stone age any more!) Attached hood. You get what you pay for! (expect to pay 80+) Remember if it rains your out there in the rain All day, a high quality rain coat is an investment in the UK climate. No such thing as bad weather just bad clothing. Make sure your rain coat is up to the task. You can get away with much poorer quality trousers, but I would STONGLY encourage you to buy a pair with zips which go well up above you re knee! The standed zip to just below the knee it not a lot of good. You try putting these on/off several times a day. If it rains trousers on, if it stops they come off! It needs to be possible! Should cover ears and top of head. You will need this to sleep in to! Sun Hat 1 Lets hope we need this item of clothing! Footwear Gloves 1 pair 1 pair Vibram-type sole is key. (That s a stiff, hard sole, something that allows you to walk on stones all day!) You don t have to wear boots, I use walking trainers if the weather is dry. See handout on FEET (updated) You need to be able to put these on / off with wet hands. With a lot of gloves the lining becomes separated when you try this & they become next to useless. If the weather is really wet, what ever type of gloves you have, they will become saturated, but they will still keep your hands warm. 4of 4

5 SunSmart Deaths from skin cancer in the UK now outnumber Australia! There has been a 25% increase in reported cases of skin cancer in the last 5 years. 11am to 3pm are the most dangerous times of the day. So long sleeved shirts (definitely no bare shoulders), hat, sun glasses & factor 15+ sun lotion are called for. Apply sun lotion 15-20mins. Before going out in the sun (the lotion does not work immediately), then reapply again when you go outside, + reapply often. Windy days, disguise the heat of the sun, beware. A tan is a sign of damaged skin. Ferry: Campsite: Scilly Isles I can t think of anything else, but, I bet I ve forgotten something! Go one tell me what it is, put me out of my misery! 5of 4
