2 Make history fun with a visit to the castle Tattershall Castle is a fantastic venue for a school visit. We have a variety of exciting and hands-on workshops for you to choose from to bring history to life. No matter what age group or ability we'll work with you to create the best learning day to suit the needs of you and your students Group Sizes We can offer a whole days activities for a maximum of 90 children. We cannot take more than one school booking a day. A typical visit takes place between 10am and 2.00pm but times can be flexible to suit your needs. We can provide taught activities for all or some of the day. Taught Workshops In this brochure you will find our range of pre-bookable workshops taught by the castle s education team. Each workshop has a price per child and will vary with the activity. The maximum number of workshops you can choose for a visit is three. See pages 4, 5 & 6 for more details. Self-Led Visits You can visit the castle unaccompanied by the Learning Team but you still need to book your visit at least seven days before proposed arrival. Admission will be charged for all adults (including helpers) and pupils wanting to look around the castle. Please check for availability. 2

3 Things to consider... Admissions Every person visiting the castle (Including adult helpers) have to pay for admission: 5.90 per adult and 3.00 per child. To help with this cost the National Trust has created a special membership for schools with affordable rates so you can visit our special places again and again for free called Education Group Membership (EGM). Details are on page 7. Lunch On a nice day we advise that children eat their lunches on the grassed inner ward in front of the castle. When its too cold or wet to eat outside children can eat in the ground floor of the castle. In the Guardhouse light refreshments are available. Shop The Guardhouse shop sells a range of pocketmoney priced items for children from 2-5. Please let us know if you would like to visit the shop. Access Due to the historic nature of the site access can be difficult. Entry into the castle is via a spiral staircase with 149 steps. Throughout the site we have loose gravel paths and two water-filled moats with steep or sheer sides. We strongly recommend a pre-visit to the site. Risk Assessments On booking a visit to the castle you will be provided with some health and safety guidance notes to help you complete your risk assessments. 3

4 Taught Workshops Each workshop lasts approximately 1 hour Be a castle explorer, uncover a legend, boogie like a medieval Lord or discover a medieval killing machine. We have lots of varied workshops to suit your chosen topic. Choose from a maximum of three workshops. Castle Tour 1.50 per head Be a castle explorer and search the castle from top to bottom. Pupils will be guided around all six floors of the great tower from underground in the basement to the battlements at the very top. The learning team will point out the defensive features of the castle, what the rooms were used for, discuss coats of arms and life inside a castle. Pupils are encouraged to make comparisons with the present day and to think about whether they would have liked to have lived in medieval times and are invited to ask and answer questions. Curriculum links: History, English (Spoken Language) Medieval Dancing (Suitable for Key Stages 1+2) 4 Learn to boogie like a Medieval Lord. This is a practical session where pupils learn to perform a variety of medieval dances, danced by both the gentry and the ordinary folk. In order to look the part pupils will get dressed up in replica clothing then learn how to correctly bow and curtsey. Pupils will learn the themes, structures and timing of the dances. 5 Taught Workshops Medieval Toys & Games Any excuse to play with toys. Based around Pieter Bruegel s famous painting Children s Games pupils will discover the games medieval children played with and have fun playing with some replica toys. Pupils are encouraged to compare medieval toys with the toys they play with today, discuss the materials they are made from and whether the games they play are different from those played 500 years ago. Curriculum links: History Themed Craft Activity 1.00 per head Get creative with our crafts. We have developed a range of art and craft activities to complement a castle visit. Pupils can choose from: making their very own Paper-plate Peacock perfect for the centrepiece of your feast, make a crown fit for a king or queen, or creating a stained glass window (Recommended for year 2 pupils due to more precise cutting and sticking). Curriculum links: Art and Design Brass Rubbing 1.00 per head Reveal a legend before your eyes. Pupils practice this traditional craft using our extensive range of brasses depicting medieval and Tudor figures. Even young pupils will take away an accomplished work, which could be used to produce an impressive display back at school. Curriculum links: Art and Design, History 5

6 Taught Workshops Object Handling (Recommended for Key stage 2) Be a history detective with our medieval objects. Based on objects used in the castle s everyday life our handling boxes give children the chance to handle replica medieval objects as well as archaeological finds dug up on site. Pupils will be encouraged to work in small groups, ask questions and enter discussions to figure out what the objects are, how they were used and who used them. Curriculum links: History, English (Spoken Language) Archers & the Longbow (Recommended for Key stage 2) Discover a medieval killing machine. Pupils will be introduced to this important and deadly weapon and the role of an archer in the 15th century. Pupils will learn about how a bow and arrow works, the materials its made out of and explore the commands used in battle via a practical exercise (Using imaginary bows ). Pupils will also get to handle some chain mail and feel just how heavy it was. Curriculum links: History, English (Spoken Language) Coursework Questions (Key stage 3 or 4) 1.50 per head Use Tattershall Castle to answer a coursework question. Our Learning Team will deliver a detailed tour/individual talks to your specifications. Content could include Tattershall s national and regional importance, how a manorial estate was run, the life of a medieval lord or exploring the whole castle complex (Including the Church, Bedehouses, College and marketplace). 7 t Education Group Membership of the National Trust (EGM) The National Trust is recognised as being Britain s biggest classroom and is one of the largest educational resources in the world. We offer a wide range of fantastic learning opportunities at a wealth of amazing places. Designed to allow not for profit education groups (whose pupils are in full-time education) free entry to properties owned by the National Trust. Please join at Tattershall castle on the day of your visit. Let us know if you wish to join and bring a cheque for the appropriate amount (payable to the National Trust) Prices valid from 01 March Feb 2016 Subscription fees for 2015/16 (Inclusive of VAT) Number on roll Annual Fee Under 50 pupils plus Subscription fees apply to the number of pupils on roll at the school rather than the number of pupils in a visiting group. Please note that all visits must be booked at least 7 days in advance. Group leaders should present a valid Education Group Membership card on arrival to avoid normal admission fees being charged. EGM covers admission charges only. Taught workshops have additional charges. All education groups must provide evidence that they have public liability insurance with a minimum 5M indemnity limit and must ensure their Insurance cover is valid when they visit. For primary aged children we require one adult to every eight pupils. 7
