Tech Note 266 How to Send and SMS Messages Using SCADAlarm xxx All Tech Notes and KBCD documents and software are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. See the Terms of Use for more information. Topic#: t C reated: July 2002 This Tech Note contains basic information on how to use SCADAlarm's and Short Message Service (SMS) functions. Note -- To send , SCADAlarm needs to have a valid SMTP Server. SCADAlarm The System Parameters Menu 1. Select Configuration/System Parameters. The System Parameters dialog box opens: 2. Click the tab. 3. Insert the server name or IP Address. https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 1/9
It is recommended that you use the IP address. This will allow SCADAlarm to send , even if the DNS Server is not working. 4. Insert your account name and address. It is recommended that you setup a specific account for SCADAlarm, instead of using a personal account. To verify if the server name is correct, close the System Parameters dialog box. Go into the Access/System Status menu and select the Server tab. Verify that the message: 'name of e- mail server' is alive appears. Enabling and Disabling 1. Select Maintenance/Schedule. The Control Schedule dialog box opens: https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 2/9
2. Click the drop-down arrow under Control type, to select the appropriate type of device, and select Enable Notification. 3. Click Apply. The selection is now in the main window. Note -- If an entry exists at the correct time, yet the incorrect control type is selected, simply select a new control type and click Apply. https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 3/9
Adding an Contact Device 1. Select Maintenance/Operator File/Change Operator. The Edit / Change Operator Information dialog box opens: https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 4/9
2. Click the How to Contact tab. 3. Add an contact device (i.e., voice mail, pager, , etc.) to the operator's How to Contact information. 4. In case of an alarm, configure where the is to be sent. 5. Select Access/Calling Preferences. The On-call Preferences Schedule dialog box opens: https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 5/9
6. Verify the new contact is enabled. 7. If the default message is not sufficient, configure the format of for each alarm. 8. Select Maintenance/Tag Report Scripts. The Tag Report Script Construction dialog box opens: https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 6/9
9. Click the Pager and Formats tab. 10. Select the option button. 11. Insert a message into the description field up to 1024 characters. SCADAlarm is now configured to send . Note -- Changing the option button from Alphanumeric, Numeric- only, or , will not change how SCADAlarm will notify the operator of the alarm. This simply changes the message editors view to display what message will be sent for each device type. SMS Message Sent Via the Alphanumeric Pager Device Most European users select UCP/GSM. Verify with your service provider what type of protocol they use. Be advised that not all Service Providers have an automated TAP or UCP connection. These types of connections are needed for SCADAlarm to send an Alphanumeric Page to an SMS device. The other alternative for text messages is to send the SMS device an as a test. Message SMS 1. Select Configuration/System Parameters. https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 7/9
The System Parameters dialog box opens: 2. Select the Paging tab. 3. Select the protocol that must be used to send messages. 4. On the Edit/Changer Operator Information dialog box, configure operators in a way that if an alarm occurs, an SMS message will be sent to the desired cellular phone using a Alpha. Pager device type. https://wdnresource.wonderware.com/support/kbcd/html/1/t htm 8/9
For the example above, the access number is the SMSC central number, while the Alpha paer ID is the cellular phone number for the specific phone to send the SMS message to. Note -- For Europe, the protocol support to send SMS is the UCP Protocol. Verify the provider supports UPC protocol. Tests are based on a Short Message Service Center (SMSC) located in Germany. Number Note -- For Troubleshooting SCADAlarm Paging issues, refer to TechNote 182. Note -- For Troubleshooting SCADAlarm issues, refer to TechNote 248. Note -- To send , SCADAlarm needs to have a valid SMTP Server. S. Vatrano Tech Notes are published occasionally by Wonderware Technical Support.
