BIG Potential Breakthrough BIG Potential Breakthrough, a BIG Lottery Fund grant fund, will deliver approximately 10m of grant funding over 3 years to eligible charities and social enterprises with the aim of improving the sustainability, capacity and scale of charities and social enterprises in order that they may deliver greater social impact. BIG Potential Advanced Launched in 2015 this 10m fund is an expansion of BIG Potential Breakthrough. 14 Helping you structure impact investment funds 13
15 What is it? Social impact investment is about directing traditional financial resources towards positive social change. We have over 12 years experience of creating new funds that match the interests of different investors with the needs of the most impactful frontline social enterprises. What is our experience? We have created regional funds, such as our Liverpool City Region Impact Fund, catalytic first loss funds, such as the Third Sector Loan Fund, mixed grant and loan funds, such as the Communitybuilders Fund, and thematic or sector focused funds, such as the Social Enterprise Investment Fund for health and social care organisations. We work with a broad range of public, private and third sector investors. How can we help you? 1. Engage working with investors, delivery partners, communities and the media. 2. Policy and advocacy influencing and working with the public sector. 3. Fund structuring taking an idea for a fund from concept through delivery to create impact. 4. Monitoring and evaluation offering ongoing support after a fund has been set up. If you are exploring the creation of a new social impact investment fund... 17 Local Impact Fund Liverpool In January 2014, we launched the UK s first Local Impact Fund in Liverpool, piloting an innovative financial product which has the potential to channel millions to charities and social enterprises that meet local needs throughout England. The 2 million Liverpool City Region Impact Fund will offer business support and simple finance to local charities and social enterprises. The Fund offers unsecured loans of up to 250,000, to help organisations grow and scale the impact they make in their communities. The Fund is financed by 1 million from the SIB Foundation, and 1 million from the European Regional Development Fund s programme; one of the first examples of leveraging EU money for an impact investment fund for charities and social enterprises. Third Sector Loan Fund Our partner Social and Sustainable Capital launched this innovative 30 million fund in It is pioneering a model designed to encourage banks and other mainstream institutions to invest in funds which finance charities and social enterprises. Santander has committed 13.5 million along with 15 million from Big Society Capital, and a 1.5 million repayable grant from us. It is the UK s largest social investment fund investing in a wide range of charities and social enterprises across all social sectors, and will make loans of 250,000 to 3 million, both secured and unsecured. We and SASC now plan to develop similar funds, working with philanthropic funders such as trusts and foundations, corporate CSR programmes, and wealthy individuals, who are interested in using their money as catalytic capital to stimulate multiples of investment for the causes they care about. Social and Sustainable Capital LLP is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA number ). Investment into social enterprises can play an important role in our long-term economic plan as well as in addressing the toughest social issues. I congratulate Santander, Big Society Capital and the Social Investment Business in developing the Third Sector Loan Fund, managed by Social and Sustainable Capital, and would hope to see other High Street banks following their lead. 16 The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nov. 2014
18 Our investment international readiness experience funds Our experience and expertise in setting up investment readiness and impact investment programmes has seen us increasingly work at an international level. Countries across the world are trying to find the best way to tackle the most challenging social problems, whilst simultaneously creating jobs and sustainable growth; we have a unique level of insight into the most effective ways to deliver against such objectives. Highlighted areas are where we have provided impact investment advice and support. 17
19 The social investment market is young but developing quickly in the UK. We are learning everyday what works and what doesn t for the charity and social enterprise sector but our focus always remains on what investment solutions are relevant to front line organisations. As part of a vibrant, growing, global social economy, we want to share our learning to help shape and establish global best practice. Jonathan Jenkins, CEO, Social Investment Business 18
