2 Jurmala Area map It is tempting to claim that Jurmala is unique. It's 30 kilometres of the finest sandy beaches, with safe bathing, warm waters in summer, and elegant residences nestling among scented pine woods certainly make it the Riviera of the Baltic. Jurmala is only 25 km from Riga, with good road and rail communications, and lies between River Lielupe and the sea.

3 Majori & Kemeri general information The tour s major accent has been put on Majori, but in addition we also advice to visit Kemeri. However, please keep in mind, that you will have to buy 2 separate tickets, if you wish to go to both of these places. The ticket s usage time is 6 hours. Be aware to coordinate your visits within the 2 places (Majori, Kemeri), as the train time tables between the 2 towns operate in approximately 1-1.5h difference.

6 What to see? Train is the easiest way to get to Jurmala from Riga. However, when buying a ticket (from the kassa at the main Railway station) you must realize that Jurmala is the name given to the conglomeration of many villages in the area, so there is no train station called 'Jurmala'. Most of the stations provide easy access to the beach, but the central one is Majori; so ask for a ticket to Majori rather than Jurmala. We advice you to visit the places shaded in blue. 7 Going to Majori After crossing the huge bridge over the river Lielupe until the train stop Dzintari, you can enjoy the pretty view of the private houses scattered along the rail way. Beautifully restored and hidden among pine-trees.

8 Majori Juras street Vanagu street Jomas street Jomas street After arriving in Majori ( either by train or minibus), you will have to cross the main street (Lienes street) first. You will be facing a small walk way just Seaside Turaidas street Lienes street- to City Museum straight in front of you. Option: You can either walk through the walk way and explore the beautiful architecture or turn right an walk down in the Lienes street to visit Jurmala City Museum. The central part of Jurmala is 24 km from Riga

9 Majori City Museum If you prefer to turn right, walk down the main street about 150 metres, until you will notice a voluminous building on your left- Jurmala City Museum. The Museum is open from Wednesday Sunday, from On Mondays and Tuesdays it is closed.

10 Majori architecture Jomas street If you have made a choice to keep walking trough the walk way...let s start the journey from Jomas street. The buildings in Majori between Jura and Jomas street give a good idea about the style of Jurmala It would be worth mentioning that in the summer the scenery altogether is superb.cafe bars, restaurants and small shops are an important feature in the whole picture.

11 Majori architecture Jomas street It would be impossible to unnoticed the lovely, light and dark green colour mix which goes well together,joma hotel. Still do not be surprised by the amount of the pine trees...this is typical of Latvia.

12 Majori architecture Jomas street On Jomas street the small souvenir shops are inviting you to step in and admire the national Latvian amber, in various shapes and sizes. Amber, originally is developed from the sea s resin. Most Amber is found South of Lithuiana along the shore of the Baltic Sea.

13 Majori architecture - Turaidas street When you have finished your promenade within the Jomas street and finding yourself at the road crossing between Jomas and Turaidas, turn left. The elegant buildings (private houses) may have caught your eye. Mostly pastel in color, they have been restored to include the smallest detail.

14 Majori architecture - Turaidas street On your right on Turaidas street, restaurant Jura holds a lovely terrace on the upper floor of the building. You can enjoy your meal there and relax... as the sea is just steps away from you. Within the reach of a few metres from restaurant Jura, on your left, you can find yet another Majori area hotel. I dare to say no one can resist one s curiosity not to enter this fabulous hotel and acknowledge its history. Its glassarchway windows are truly amazing, let alone the inside decorations...

15 Majori architecture Option: You can either turn left to Juras street and keep admiring the irresistible architecture or cross the Juras street and keep walking toward the seaside beaches. If you wish to see the sandy beaches and feel the calm and relaxing atmosphere, keep walking straight down Turaidas street. Just before you enter the seaside zone, on your right is a Concert Hall, built in 1936.

16 Majori seaside This typical Latvian beach is embraced with pine-trees. Fine sandy beaches. The BLUE FLAG is symbol of high environmental standards as well as good sanitary and safety facilities at beach/marina.

17 Majori architecture - Juras iela Juras street is a continuation of the amazing Majori architecture. Each building holds its own history and definitely is irreplaceable. It would be put it down as you have to really feel quite a struggle to just in plain words, to see it for yourself it. Along the way, view another of Majori s famous hotels, (Eiropa) painted in a calming blue colour with its own glamour.

18 Majori architecture - Juras iela Private residences, some left in original wood colour which emits warmth, others in various styles and tastes. Keep walking straight. After you pass the Baltic Beach Hotel,on your right, cross the Juras street, and turn left to the small Vanagu street alley.

19 Majori architecture Vanagu iela Walk down Vanagu street until you have reached Jomas street again. When located on Jomas street, turn left. Keep walking. 21 Kemeri Kemer i is sit uat ed 6 km f r om t he sea It s development is accordingly connected with the medicinal properties of the sulfuric water contained in the swamps. These properties have been known already in the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century among the local population who used the "Holy springs" for medical purposes. People from the higher circles of Kurzeme used to come here to get rid of their illnesses. They were received by the foresters and were put up in their houses and bathe in the healing water brought from the swamps. One of the foresters was called Kemers, and the swamp, later also the place were named after him.

24 Getting around in Kemeri Robezu street A. Upisa Katedrales street street Park and the Sanitarium Tourist office Tukuma street Kemeri train station Kemeri was originally a place for sanatoriums and summer homes. In a way Kemeri and Majori seem to be a large town spread along the seaside. Majori is a lively town, whether Kemeri is more surrounded by forest with peaceful atmosphere.

25 Where to start? As you get off the train, cross the railway towards the train station stop. Walk past the building. Pass the bus stop. (On your right). Keep walking straight, until you pass a building on your left, which will be the Kemeri high school. Turn right, and now you are on the main road, called Tukuma street. Turn left, when you see a street called Robezu. Keep walking straight, until you approach A. Upisa street, turn right.

26 Kemeri architecture There are 3 different religion churches in Kemeri: Lutheran, Catholic and Orthodox Church. Each of them have its own charm and irresistible view. Lutheran church built in 1897.

27 The Sanatorium Originally a sanatorium, but today being modified for a very elegant hotel. A stunning white building, can be easily seen miles away. The additional ornaments just compliment the whole look in depth.
