1 Interactive Weather Map with Microsoft PowerPoint Created by Catherine Douthard Instructional Technology Specialist Product Overview: In this lesson, 4 th or 5 th grade students will use the information they learned about weather to create an animated weather forecast map to present to the class. This lesson is aligned to the ELA Common Core State Standards. Students will complete the requirements on the Student Rubric and print the completed slide for assessment. 2 Technology-Connected Lesson Plan Interactive Weather Map with Microsoft PowerPoint Name: Catherine Douthard Grade Levels: Fourth Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 or 5 topic or subject area. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. Technology Standards: Follows established rules for care and use of technology (4) Operates basic technology tools and applications (5) Applies word processing/desktop publishing tools to facilitate writing process (6) Uses multimedia tools to express ideas (8) Curriculum Areas: English Language Arts, Word Processing and Keyboarding Interdisciplinary Research, Note Taking and Presentation Assessment: The student will print a final copy of their weather map slide. Technology Connection: Computer and Printer Materials: Microsoft PowerPoint, Student Rubric, Student Interactive Weather Map PowerPoint template file, Teacher Interactive Weather Map PowerPoint master file, Introduction Movie to the Lesson, Printable copy of US map Procedures: 1) The teacher will show the Introduction Movie and explain the different symbols and text needed to complete the map. 2) The teacher will open and demonstrate how to use the Student Interactive Weather Map PPT template and save their work in a different file. 3) Students will go to their computers and open the Student Interactive Weather Map template in the assigned folder. Following the required list of items in the Student Rubric, they will experiment by creating a virtual weather forecast map. 4) Students can save and print their completed maps. They can also use Custom Animation Tools to animate the symbols for their presentation. Option: The students can complete a rough draft of their forecast on the printable map before getting on the computer. Extension: Students can dress up like a television meteorologist and present their weather forecast for a live audience.

The map slide has a title with your name on it. The map has 4 different types of precipitation symbols. The map has 2 Low pressure and 2 High pressure areas. The map has a Cold front and a Warm front. The map has 4 cities marked with Low and High temperatures. A printed hard copy was turned in to the teacher Extra: Custom animation was added. Music or sound was added. Additional creative touches where added. The weather forecast was presented.
