1 Kernmodul Physiologie SS 2015 The present module intends to provide a deeper understanding of physiology, ranging from molecular and cell physiology to integrative human physiology. You will be exposed to present research areas in physiology at Charité and improve your scientific knowledge and research skills including data collection, analyses, interpretation, and discussing peerreviewed international publications. In addition to real data collections to be performed in class and complementing the lectures and seminars, the goals of the module will cover very accessible topics that include, but are not limited to basics of biosignal recording, processing, and analyses (e.g. filtering, artifact correction, smoothing, mobile monitoring technologies, validation of new technologies, etc.), chronobiology, brain function (EEG), physical activity, body composition technologies, electrophysiological techniques in epithelial physiology, optical methods (confocal laser scanning microscopy, super resultion microscopy, freeze fracture electron microscopy), homology modelling of protein structure. This framework of topics will be delivered by close collaboration between the Institut für klinische Physiologie, CBF and Institut für Physiologie, CCM, each covering their respective expertise in physiological research. 2 Please note: (1) Max Number of Students The class is limited to a max. of 10 students. You can sign up for the class via the Campus Management System. (2) Successful completion of module In addition to regular attendance you will have to pass an oral exam of about 20 min at the end of the term. The result of this exam will mainly determine your final mark. However, it is also a prerequisite of this module to deliver presentations to the class. You will be asked to give two presentations of approx. 20 min plus 10 min discussion. You will also chair sessions (lead the discussion). You will get credit for these presentations and they will be considered as part of your final mark! (3) Dates and times Typically, the lectures and seminars are held on Thursdays, h to h, and h to h, respectively. The class termed Übung is scheduled as a block and will be given 4 times on Mondays, h. Due to holidays some classes may be swopped.

3 (4) Dates and times Very importantly, please also check the exact location for each class. The first half of the semester (until June 1) will be conducted at Charite Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Mitte. Depending on the type of class different rooms may have been booked. The second half of the semester (until July 16) will be conducted at Charite Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin (Hindenburgdamm 30). Meeting point: Institute for Clinical Physiolog, Use elevator 17 or 18 to 5 th floor, turn right, through the glass door stating that patients are not admitted (5) First and final class The module will start with an introduction and seminar on April 13. The final class will be your oral exam on July 16. (6) Language The module will be taught in English or German, depending on students preference.
