1 Class title Life, Love, and Literature at the Renaissance Court: Henry VIII and Francis I Course number (s) LLRO 44210/ MI /ENGL Semester Spring 2014 Teacher Prof. JoAnn DellaNeva Points of contact jdella@nd.edu Office hours Course Overview: In Hampton Court Palace at one end of the Tudor Great Hall hangs a painting entitled The Field of Cloth of Gold. This painting, which dates from approximately 1545, depicts the meeting of King Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France near Calais in This painting will serve as the backdrop and point of departure for this course, which will examine key Renaissance literary texts from England and Europe within a larger cultural framework. The course will be centered on the loci of Henry s palaces as well as Francis s châteaux and will consider material culture, print culture, art (paintings, sculpture, and tapestries), architecture, music, and religion as a complement to the study of early modern literature. Readings will include The Courtier of Castiglione, Machiavelli s The Prince, Thomas More s Utopia, The Praise of Folly by Desiderius Erasmus, Gargantua and Pantagruel of François Rabelais, and selections from the Heptameron of Marguerite de Navarre (Francis I s sister) as well as the lyric poetry of Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and Henry VIII in England and that of Clément Marot and Maurice Scève in France. We will also read Shakespeare s The Famous History of the Life of Henry VIII (circa 1613) to consider how the image of the monarch had evolved by the beginning of the seventeenth century. These literary texts will be supplemented by viewing the A Man for All Seasons, by Robert Bolt, which tells of the events leading to the martyrdom of St. Thomas More. At various points in the course, we will take full advantage of the opportunities presented by being on site in London. This will include supplementary visits to sites such as Hampton Court Palace, The British Library, The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. An optional visit to France over spring break to allow students to visit the châteaux of Francis I will also be offered, subsidized in part by the College of Arts and Letters. Learning objectives This course satisfies the University Literature Requirement. It also counts for the distribution requirement in the English Major. By the end of this course in comparative literature: 1. students will become familiar with several classic literary works of the Renaissance/Tudor period 2. Students will be able to make connections among texts from various

2 literary and language traditions and will recognize the pivotal role of Italian culture in shaping the courtly ideals of Renaissance/Tudor France and England. 3. Students will be able to place these important texts in their broader historical and cultural contexts and will be able to identify parallel movements in music, art, and architecture. 4. Students will be introduced to rhetorical analysis and to the concept of material cultures and learn how to analyze these objects as texts that offer insight into a distant past. 5. Finally, students will also be able to engage in comparative studies of the cultures embodied by these two courts and express these ideas in sophisticated written and oral analyses, as measured by frequent required classroom presentations and two papers. Assessment structure: Requirements include two medium-length papers and frequent oral classroom presentations, as well as a final exam. Required resources Machiavelli, N. The Prince. Trans.
